I have used the "5-Factor Fitness" by Harley Pasternak when I want to lose weight. It is a book by a trainer for stars like Jessica Simpson and Halley Berry. The first couple of days are kind of tough, but it gets easier. It all makes sense and provides simple workouts as well. I lost about 5 pounds the first week I was on it, but then I have more to lose than you.

Good luck.

I've had four children, and it seems to get harder each time to loose the weight. This last time, I ended up "going back to my roots." I went to www.bragg.com. Paul Bragg is the one that saved Jack Lalanne. I do the distilled water, ACV drink (very cheap), and altered my diet (not exactly to their levels). I've lost all my weight, and even back to what I weighed in high school with very little effort!!!
THEY ARE AWESOME and CHEAP!

I am not expert . . . I have to lose some weight myself, but I do have some suggestions. I would try oatmeal in the morning with a little cinnamon and sweetener if you desire. Then at about 10 AM have 5 (only 5) Triscuit crackers and a low-fat string cheese. This should help with the feeling yucky around then. Have a small, healthy lunch, a small snack around 3 PM (I usually have 1 slice of whole wheat bread with a bit of peanut butter and an 8oz. glas of non-fat milk, then have a reasonable, healthy dinner. Stay away from fat and fried foods as much as possible. Then top that with a bit of walking each day and you should be set. I have just started jump roping, and I love it . . . 15-20 minutes and it is a great workout.

Hi K.-
I own a women's fitness center, so I've heard about all kinds of different diets and been able to see first hand what works and what doesn't. My suggestion is Weight Watchers. It works better than anything else out there and you can join on-line if you don't want to mess with finding a local group here in town. If you want to try to go it alone, here are some suggestions. Make sure you're getting at least 1200 calories a day and drinking at least 64 oz. of water a day. 100 oz. would be better. Try to eat smaller meals more frequently; don't go more than 5 hours without eating. Focus on increasing your protein. Snacks should be high protein. Make sure you're getting enough fiber. Make sure you're exercising. I'd be happy to chat with you if you have questions. Good luck!

i second Heather S's suggestion of the Fat Flush plan. i lost 30 lbs. in 3 months back in 2004, went from a size tight 10 to a size 4. yes, it's restrictive, but IF YOU DO IT RIGHT you'll lose the 12 lbs. in two weeks, and after the 4th day (after detoxing all the bad stuff from your body) you'll feel lighter, have more energy you know what to do with and you'll glow. i re-started it on jan 1st and i am loving the results already and how i feel. incorporate some light weights for arm workouts. losing weight helps but you'll want to tone as you lose the weight. good luck.

Hi Kristal- I am a SAHM with a 21/2 year old. I have about 15 pounds that I want to lose to get back to my pre-baby healthy weight. I am doing an 8 week challenge to lose the weight with Arbonne's Figure 8 program. It is a healthy living program - with supplements, protein shakes & menus to help you integrate healthier choices into your life. I started the challenge at the beginning of the week, and I have already lost 2 pounds. Check out www.gofigure8.com. I would love to have another mom on my team to partner up with and keep each other motivated to reach our goals. Let me know if you are interested, and I can help you get set up. Warm Regards,

There are also options to do the program online or going to meetings and there are mom and me meeting so you can bring your children. Very helpful!!

I just lost 8 pounds in 28 days. It's was rough the first couple of days, but after that, it's been smooth. Drop your fat intake. Looking back at my nutrition book from college, it says the average sedentary woman (meaning doesn't hit the gym regularly), should not consume more than 30 grams a day. the average american consumes 65-90 grams of fat per day which is not good at all, unless you're a spartan athlete. For me, I have lowered to 20 and it's been great. Fat has the most calories per gram than protein and carbs. There are 9 calories per gram of fat and only 4 calories per gram of protein and 4 calories per gram of carbs. So, if you cut your fat intake, you will automatically reduce your caloric intake, which helps on a steady weight loss.

It know it sounds drastic, but it's the only way of losing weight that I have been able to find that is VERY livable. It's just a matter of finding the right recipes for making dinner. Needless to say, I eat a lot of fish and buffalo (has considerably less fat than beef and tastes the same as beef----except more tender).

Also, working out will make is shed faster too.

Good Luck!

Dear K.---You can try "Trim Care" by Dr. Ivan Goldsmith here in Las Vegas. I have lost 25 lbs since June 07 and feel great. I am 44 and look the best I have in years. They see you once a week to weigh and take BP and you get a shot of
B-12/fat burners. Just follow the 8 week program and it changes your lifestyle, eating habits and energy levels and it comes off with ease. I did not do any strenuous exersize (other than shopping!)during the last six months at all. They have a maintenance program which is excellent too. The best part is that they are very supportive (which we all need) with several doctors on staff. Best of luck to you!

Hi K., I don't diet either but needed to lose 10 - 15 to get back to where my clothes were comfortable and start to get back into good shape. I did a protein shake and nutrition bar program from Shaklee called CINCH which was really surprisingly tasty and good to do... the way it's designed, it helps eliminate the cravings and hunger that go with typical diets...there's also more to it about why it's a great way to lose weight... lots to do with burning fatty tissue not muscle... anyway, let me know if you want more info, there's a link to the site with info and I sell the products now... Lots and lots of people have used it with excellent success and there's a doctor involved with it that gives more informaiton on a recording you can listen to.

You will probably lose most of what you're trying to lose in 5 weeks but count on doing it for 10 weeks to make sure you hit your goal.
It is a meal replacement program, and costs $4.50 a meal approximately... you eat dinners on your own. :)

Good for you. I have been overweight ever since I had my child and have never been real serious about losing it. I think it is great you are trying now and not procrastanating. I would recommend trying weight watchers. You will probably do really well on it. You can eat what you want but just have to control your portions. I believe they are doing a no cost for joining special and it is usually no more that $12 a week to go. It really is a good program. Good luck with losing and have fun with the boys.

Wow this is the most responses i have seen on this site. Good question. I just started Arbonne weight loss. I saw that a few moms on here also are using this product. It works. My mom was a spokesperson for weight watchers for 4 years. They teach you great ways to eat healthy. They are a great life traing/coaching program.. After that, when she gets over the 10lbs range, she takes Arbonne (Figure 8) weight loss pills. They are all natural and are great. I just started and so did 3 girls at my work. Good Luck. I also am 10lbs over my ideal weight. and my baby is 9months. I just stoped breastfeeding and that is why i am taking these now.

It sounds like when you ate cereal for breakfast that your blood sugar was low around 10. So you probably weren't having enough protein for breakfast. Milk has protein but maybe you weren't drinking enough. I have the same problem when i eat cereal for breakfast. I have found that if i eat one slice of peanut butter toast with a big glass (like 12oz) of milk each morning about 6 that my blood sugar stays even all the way until noon, and i don't get hungry until noon either. In order to keep the calories low i use whole wheat toast (i think it has less sugar or a better sugar that white or potato bread), drink skim milk, and i eat some of that healthier peanut butter (i like Naturally More). It takes awhile to get used to the heathly peanut butter, trust me! However, it is worth it to lose a few pounds. Good luck!

Hi K.,

Here are some thoughts for you!

Healthy Weight Loss & Management for Life

The South Beach Diet...The Zone...Eat Right for Your Type ... which one really works? The answer is: all of them and none of them. You can lose weight on just about any diet program, but the questions are: Will the weight stay off? Can you continue to eat this way for a lifetime? And most importantly, is it healthy to do so? The first 3 letters in the word diet are "die"! :o) Do you really want to eat Special K cereal until you lose 12#? Doesn't sound too good to me! To better understand weight loss, let’s look at the role of macronutrients. Complex carbohydrates are simply your best source of energy. Those include starchy vegetables, fruits, grains & legumes. Protein is used as a building material in the body but over consumption can lead to kidney failure. Fat is easily stored by the body; In fact, biopsies from the hips & waist reveal the source of the fat—pork, dairy, chicken, olive oil, etc., so the fat you eat is literally the fat you wear! Dr. Pam Popper of the Wellness Forum recommends consuming 10-15% of calories from protein, 15-20% from fat & 65-75% from complex carbohydrates. She suggests that, losing weight permanently and healthfully involves converting to a plant-based diet. The less animal food you consume, and the more plant food you consume, the faster you’ll lose weight. The Wellness Forum-style approach to eating allows for some animal foods & fat consumption of 15-20% of total calories. There is no need for deprivation & hunger while losing weight! Find some calorie dilute foods that you will enjoy eating and that fill you up. Fiber-rich foods are a great choice as they are so filling. The best thing about this style of eating is that you’ll enjoy a variety of other important health benefits while you’re losing the weight.

QUICK TIPS FOR HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS:

1. Exercise will accelerate your weight loss.

2. Increase intake of fiber-rich foods: raw fruits & vegetables, grains, legumes, etc.

3. Eat 5-6 mini-meals, versus 3 large ones, & drink plenty of water throughout the day.

4. Keep the junk foods out of your house, car & office.

5. Have fun trying new, healthier foods & recipes.

6. Identify eating patterns that contributed to weight gain (i.e., stress snacking).

7. Stay positive & don’t give up!!

I use the JP+ Complete every day for maintence weight loss. It's fabulous and we'll never be without it. Mike and I go through a case every month.

Also increasing fiber is a great idea!
Fiber: The Unsung Hero

The average American consumes roughly 1/3 of the recommended daily intake of fiber. For optimal health, adults should consume 45 grams of fiber daily. So, why the shortfall? Because foods like meats, fats/oils & dairy have no fiber, and processed foods and most fast foods contain very little fiber—usually 1-2 grams per serving. Most know that fiber is important for digestive health, but it also buffers the absorption of glucose into our bloodstream. In fact, diabetics should consume 60 grams of fiber daily. Another benefit of fiber is that it binds with toxins so they’re eliminated through waste. Risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by as much as 40% with a high fiber diet. Fiber also boosts good cholesterol & lowers the bad. Research shows that fiber reduces risk of cardiovascular disease: as your fiber intake increases your risk of cardiovascular events, including death, decreases substantially. Fiber assists with the antioxidant processes, so your body can better put those vital nutrients to work slowing down aging & fighting disease. Finally, a high fiber diet is great for weight loss and weight management since you’ll feel full with fewer and more nutrient dense calories.

QUICK TIPS ON FIBER:

Fiber rich foods include raw fruits & vegetables, whole grains and legumes. With 14 grams of fiber per serving, Juice Plus+ Complete smoothies (with added golden flaxseed, ground, and frozen berries) are a great way to start your day!

Fiber-Rich Foods Fill You Up!

The stomach holds about one liter of food. Here is a comparison of the caloric density of a stomach full of different foods:

•Oils 4,000 calories

•Potato chips 3,000 calories

•Meat 3,000 calories

•Cheese 3,400 calories

•Chicken 1,500 calories

•Fish 1,400 calories

•Beans 500 calories

•Fruit 300 calories

•Green vegetables 200 calories

Hi,
I have done this diet called reset. It works great. I lost 10lbs in the first 5 days, though most people lose between 4 and 9. i have continued on with it to lose 40 lbs. I look and feel great. A friend of mine has also done it and she had a lot more to lose. She has lost 55lbs so far in the last 3.5 months. She is continuing on to lose a total of 70lbs. It resets your metabolism, blood sugar levels and can even lower cholesterol and triglyerides. It helps cut the cravings and is a natural way to lose the weight and keep it off. It is done with all natural shakes and bars. They don't have any herbs or other weight loss drugs in them, but they are made to be a food. Unlike a lot of the other similar comapnies that are out there, this one makes the shakes a coomplete meal replacement, so your body is not left feeling unsatisfied and undernourished. The shakes have everyhting you need including protein, fiber, carbs, sugars, vitamins and minerals. They are very low glycemic, which helps lose weght, cut the cravings, reset your metabolism and regulates blood sugar. The shakes have a glycemic index of 23, where an apple has a glycemic index between the 50's and 60's. The glycemic index is how the sugars in foods affect our blood sugar. You didn't mention anything about exercise...perhaps take walks with your children daily..that will get your mind off the food you can't eat and make the kids happy too! Also...for breakfast you definitely can't eat those yummy eggs, sausage everday..maybe try just a couple of eggs and some brown rice..or do hot cereal. I think eating hot food in the morning really helps curb my appetite for the day and keeps me warm too! Hope things go well for you...cheers, Y.

You can get a book called Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam. The guide lists over 1500 vitamins with an evalution...food grade ( which most are with up to 85% fillers) and pharmaceutical grade. Like Cindy A. said, try www.sparkpeople.com. I don't think you should "diet". Just eat smaller portions of everything, lots of fruit and veggies, get some fiber in there, get a bit of exercise everyday. SparkPeople lets you log your daily calories and exercise and the support system is great! It's totally free, you have nothing to lose, nobody tries to sell you anything and it holds you accountable for yourself. If you truly want to lose the weight and keep it off, don't try to lose it all in 2 weeks, it'll probably take longer and be harder than just taking some pill or eating the same foods all the time or going on some trendy diet. SparkPeople will give you the support you need to achieve your goals. It has many members who've lost ALOT of weight and it's an inspiration to see that. I have lost about 35lbs in the last couple of years and still have 20 to go. I was at a total plateau until I joined SP last year and got motivated all over again. It's a slow process, but seeing all those others do it, I know I can, too. And so can you!!

Hey K., first off mad applause to you for deciding to take control and move forward toward a better healthier you... You have no idea how often I see or talk to people who say they want to do something about their fitness but never move forward because this or those, well its life, trust me when you have kids everything changes; there is barely time for you. However regardless you have to make that time. Kudos for looking into better eating. Now here is my advice, if you really want to shed unwanted pounds efficiently then you must build some muscle, NO I don’t mean like a female body builder but tone, it is a proven fact since muscle is a metabolic active muscle it is more effective at burning unwanted calories in the body, even when we are at rest. I do not know if you have listened to the latest reports but finally the media is reinforcing what we in the fitness world have been saying along cardio is not enough. You must incorporate not only proper nutrition but actually some kind of weight training. For the most effective way to burn I'd suggest you get into circuit training which involves weights with cardio. I hope this helps you and I wish you the best. You go girl! try pilates. You can get an at home video and it has a 20 minute work out on it. I do it when my 3 kids go down for a nap and still have time to nap myself. It really does help. even if you can't do all the exercises and you skip some you see results. I find it helps relieve some stress too.

Hi K.- You were on the right track to begin with. If you want to kick your metabolism into gear, make sure your meals have protein, carb and fat. And ALWAYS have breakfast. Eat 5-6 times per day. I'm sure you've heard that before, but it helps your body understand that it will continue to have nourishment and in turn burn calories. Having protein in the morning is a great idea, and eggs are a great source. Some of the variations you might try would be using 2 egg whites and one whole egg. You'll get the protein and less cholesterol and calories. Along with that you might try a slice of whole wheat toast with about a teaspoon of peanut butter. Have a small (8 oz) glass of orange juice and get plenty of water throughout the day. So if you eat at 8, you could probably hold over till 11:00 and eat again with the same combination of p/c/f. Try to eat around every three hours for 5-6 times. Try not to eat 2-3 hours before bedtime unless it is something very light (like nonfat yogurt). Of course you need to incorporate exercise into your day as well. One thing I would also say is not to limit yourself on what you eat at any given time during the day. (ie. just because it's supper time, doesn't mean you can't have eggs). Just steer clear of grease, too much bread/pasta, mayo, extra salad dressing, etc. Eat clean.

When exercising, try doing interval training for your cardio and do some weight training as well. The more muscle you have the more fat and calories you burn each day. Plus it helps you feel and look great! Interval training is when you alternate high energy bouts of exercise with recovery periods. I do it when I get on the treadmill or elliptical. Warm up for 5 minutes then turn the speed up to a good quick sprint for about 30-45 seconds and then slow down to a decent walk for 1.5 to 2 minutes. Do this 5-6 times and then a cool down. This type of exercise helps to increase and continue fat burning for several hours after you are done exercising. Try the gym or if not that, then do some cardio at home. DVD's, walking, jogging. Try it all so you stay interested. Don't look at this as a time of deprivation, but more of moderation and proper food choice.

I know how frustrating those last few pounds can be. Besides exercising regularly and eating right (great suggestions below) I recommend the Master Lemon Cleanse Diet. I owned a modeling agency and would put my models on it if they needed to lose 10 lbs fast. Out of 100+ people who I know have done it I have seen a very high success rate. I did it myself for 10 days every 3 months after I had my first baby and that is how I lost the extra 25 lbs I gained during my pregnancy. You did say a "reasonable" diet and I don't know if I would call it that though since it is fairly difficult. You don't eat for 10 days and just drink this lemonade drink that is actually not bad in taste. A lot of people I tell about it think that they won't have any energy but after the first few days you actually have a good amount of energy to play with your kids and do your regular routine. I lose 11 lbs and gain 2 back every time I do it but I have known others to lose 15 lbs and keep all 15 off. You need to exercise and eat right after doing the cleanse or the weight might come back on. Also, it is a cleanse of your whole body so it has great health benefits as well as fast weight loss. If you want I can email you (or anyone else who is interested) the information ____@____.com luck !!

K.,
I know this is going to sound way too easy (and difficult with 2 kids now) but the way to lose the weight is to "fast walk"...........Walk at a brisk pace for an hour a day, early in the morning if you can. I promise you that if you can walk daily, (5 days a week) the weight will come off and stay off. I vividly recall having 12 pounds to lose to get to my desired weight and after a month of walking I was really seeing results and in about 3-4 months I had lost it ALL! Don't diet or do anything fancy......just do a brisk walk and you will lose the weight!

Goodluck!
Mishel

Hi K.,

I have a wellness business and we have some amazing products that can help you get your body back into a place of healthy balance. We don't approach loseing weight by "dieting" but rather by giving the body the nutrients it needs so that it can actually balance itself. We say that rather than starving the body thin, we are "feeding the body thin." Check out www.lifeforce.net/20542440 and feel free to call me if you would like a consultation.

Hi K.
I just started a food journal for myself at the beginning of the year. Being at home, I was snacking when I was bored and drinking too much tea with sugar.. my suggestion, drink lots of water with lemon slices, eat oranges.. both of the citrus fruits help with metabolism jump starts.. then WALK alot, walking is the best exercise
Good luck!

K., stay away from pills and and those silly quick weight lose drinks and soups. They may work at first but you end up putting the weight back on (plus extra) when you stop using them. I have to agree with Maryann down below... Drink lots of water, watch your portions (Usually the size of your palm) cut back on high calorie and fatty foods but don't deprive yourself of a treat now and then... and definitely WALK A LOT!! I bought a treadmill at a gargae sale for $100 and I use it 4 days a week. It's great cause I don't ever worry about having to drag my kids to a gym.......... Anyway, good luck to you...

Weight Watchers is the most sensible option out there. No fads, no fuss, no muss. They base the diet on REAL food. No elimination of food groups, no weird pills or potions.

It's the only one out there that teaches portion control and sensible eating habits that you can stick with for life.

Trust me, I've been on just about every program known to man and I can safely say WW is the way to go. Good luck.

There is also the Weigh Down book. It is where you wait for hunger, ask God to help you resist temptation (eating when not hungry) and pray and read the Bible when you are tempted. The book is by Gwen Shamblin I lost 10 lbs. my fist week. It's really about listening to your body, God designed it perfectly to know when you are hungry and when you are full. It is just as important to eat when hungry as to stop when you are full.
I wish you the best. I need to get back to it. It does work when I do it.
Take care,
K.
