My 4 yr old is a budding photographer. She's discovered how to use the camera on my phone. She actually takes the most interesting pictures. I'm thinking of framing some as gifts. The problem is, I don't want her playing with my phone all the time! Do you have a kids camera you can recommend? Needs to be simple to use but high resolution, because she likes to do a lot of macro shots.
I'm so glad I asked! Thank You! You all saved me from buying a dissapointing kids camera. I will need to look for one that is shock proof and water proof. She's very careful with her things, but her 5 yr old brother is a little rougher on toys.
Its not a kid camera but I would suggest getting the one by Olympus that is waterproof,shock proof and a few other things. I let my son at 3 1/2 use mine on a hike and he knocked it around on the rocks and it still worked. I used it for the first time underwater this year and it was so much fun. I bought the floating wrist band and it was awesome because my kids were throwing it to each other in the pool and it didn't sink.
We've tried two kinds of 'kids camera's' and they SUCK! Sure, they're durable, but they're hard to use and take the crappiest pictures.
For her 4th birthday, we bought our daughter a real digital camera. It's a cannon, the cheapest one we could fine. And she LOVES it. It takes great pictures and when we see 20 pictures of her big toe, we can just delete 19 of them!
I agree, a kids camera is not going to cut it. They are great because they are durable and most younger kids aren't worried about quality. If you want something for a budding photographer, I'd invest in a cheap point and shoot digital. You can probably easily find something that will cost the same as a kid camera, but have better quality resolution (it just won't handle a beating the way a kid camera can).
The Leapfrog leapster and then purchase the camera attachment to go with it.
kids' cameras suck. we have had 2 and none of them have lasted either in quality or interest. i got my kids canon point and shoot when they were 5. now that they're 7 i am getting them better ones for xmas. they need to be taught about value of stuff and not replaced when the equipment is mishandled.
We have tried the Fisher Price brand kids camera and would NOT recommend it as it has extremely low resolution. We actually passed on an old Sony digital camera from a few years ago that we were not using anymore. Its pretty easy to use and much better resolution.
My daughter (7) loves her vtech kidizoom. It takes pretty good pics and there are a few games on it as well.
Buy her a REAL camera. If you purchase it at an Office Depot or such you can usually get an extended warranty for not a lot of money that will cover ANY damage.
We have bought cheap kids cameras and saying they take lousy pictures is an understatement.
My 9yo has had a Nikon CoolPix since he was a toddler. Got it for FAR less than a 'kids camera' on sale over xmas many many moons ago (For apx $50). He also got a Flip 18mo ago (also $50, amazon electronic monday sale).
He treats, and has always treated, his electronics very carefully. The camera is "only" 6mp NOW, years later, but it's still better than anything on the market for kids. And works out, now, to less than $10 a year. GREAT buy.
If you think about it: Toddlers throw sippy cups, but place glasses very carefully. Children jump on the bed, but operate DVD players better than adults. Children can VERY easily be taught what are "toys" and what are NOT. And they treat them accordingly. Ditto, non-toys just last and last and last. Toys are built shoddily and break.
I'd strongly recommend waiting for either labor day sales, or the cybermonday sale at xmas. You can easily get a $200 camera for $50.
I seem to agree with the majority. One of my granddaughters likes to take pictures, so she was given a "kid camera" for Christmas. It was difficult to keep working and did things to the computer. So her parents gave her an inexpensive point-and-shoot, and it is very good for her. Give her a nice, well-padded camera case, too - preferably one with a long strap so she can wear it across her body; it will protect the camera and hopefully prevent her losing the camera.
