I am looking for a digital camera for my daughter for Christmas. I have been searching for one online and I am very confused with all of the reviews that the kids cameras are getting. Does anyone have recommendations for an easy to use, first camera. For such a pricey item, I want to be sure I am making a good purchase. It looks like the Fisher Price Kid Tough camera is the most expensive but works best, what do you think? I am also looking to buy one for my grandmother, something easy to use. Problem is she doesn't have a computer. If I get her a camera without a memory card slot, can she take it to HEB or WalMart and use the USB cable to download her pictures at their printing machine or do you have to have a card? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to go with the Fisher Price Kid Tough camera. Thanks to someones great advice, I went to flickr.com and saw real examples of pictures taken by kids using the Kid Tough camera. A lot of the reviews say that the pictures are dark or blurry but the ones I saw here were great. Whenever deciding whast camera to buy youshould go to flickr.com and type in the camera name and you can see real pictures taken by ordinary people, not the companies professional photographers.

I don't know about the digital camera but my daughter has the Fisher Price Kid Tough FP3 player and we love it. She drops it all the time and has stepped on it but it keeps working. So if the camera is as tough as the player then I would buy it.

If you have a yahoo account go to flickr.com and do a search on the camera you are looking at. There are pictures from all kinds of cameras on there and you should be able to see some that have obviously not been edited.

I have heard a lot of good things on the kids fs brand. Not that the picture quality is outstanding, but that it holds up well and the kids like it.

On the adult one. I bought my kids the Olympus stylus waterproof 600. They have several different varities that are waterproof/shockproof and hold up well. The picture quality is reasonably good and the card is small but holds a ton of pictures.

A card would be better to get because she can get someone at the stand to help her. It would be better than using a cable. You want to be careful about what you plug your camera into! A fried camera is no good and more expensive to replace than a fried card. It is easy to mess up something when your camera is plugged into your source.

The higher end kodaks (700 models), the cannons sd models, some fuji's and most of the nikons are pretty good too. Just look at what you think she would be shooting most. For a lot of mixed things and simple kodak is great- what I recommended for my mom who never reads instructions. For dark rooms, events, etc. Cannon is great. For wonderful color and abiltiy to change some settings Nikons are great. It just depends on how it is used. Like shoes, they come in all flavors. LOL

5 megapixels are good, don't need higher unless you want to go fancy and make huge prints. one that has auto and program mode is better. Auto uses flash on most cameras every.single.time. Program lets you pop it up if you want to or if it thinks there is a need for it.

Good luck

I rarely use the high end pixel portion on my cool digicam because many folks do not want to be emailed hi res photos.
I have also dropped my camera as many times as I have dropped my cell phone. If the FP one is heavier duty than grownup digicams, go for that. If it is just as fragile, try to find the best deal from all digicams. For electronics I usually compare amazon and pricegrabber online.

Ooh, I just looked at it on line. It looks far more durable and less expensive than anything I have seen for mommys!! It also has built in memory and a slot for additional memory. I may get one for my son to share with my niece and nephews to play with when they come over. Thanks for bringing up this topic.

I just found it for $48 at walmart.com

For Grandma, you should look for one with a large display for the least amount of money if she is not computer savvy.

I was looking through the current AVON magalog and saw a children's digital camera for $30.00. My husband and I are considering ordering one for each of our three sons.
Just an more cost savvy option.

Hi R.,

You can take it to the HEB photo Lab (they really have friendly people that could assist you). There is Kodak machine right in front of the counter that is self serve but, there is always someone there to help you with any questions or concerns that you might have.
Hope this helps,

You might consider getting your mom a camera with a printer dock. Kodak has a really good one, the quality of the pictures is great! You don't need a computer either, you just set the camera on the dock and print the pictures. You can also take out the memory card and print the pictures at walmart or wherever. I hope this helps!

How old is your daughter? I bought my son (3) the Fisher Price kid tough camera. It was like $50 at WM. It doesnt have the greatest resolution but he enjoys taking pictures and looking at them on the screen more than he worries about printing and all that. We usually print the ones that I take on mine for keepsakes as the main point was to get him to leave mine alone and we have both at all functions. As for your grandmother, my camera is one of the Kodak ones with the printer dock and I love it!!

FP definitely for your daughter - and invest in the case.

For your grandmother, you might look into a KODAK printdoc or something similar... it's a good, easy to use camera and it lets you do all the zooming and cropping on the camera and printer.. then you put the camera on and hit print. The pictures cost a little less (28 c maybe) than having them developed at wal-mart.

OTOH - if your grandmother is technophobic, a camera geared more towards kids might be more appropriate. I'm not sure of the card vs cable... I prefer cards anyway, they hold more memory.

A friend of mine who is a professional photographer suggested that people should buy their children regular digital cameras. For the price of a children's digital you can get a regular digital camera. The quality of the photos will be better. Unfortunately I did not take that advice and I've got through several children's cameras because the quality was poor, the lcd was poor, the camera was akward for my child. I now have a regular digital camera for him and he takes great pictures and he's excited about taking them. He still tries to take off with my cannon sure shot but I retrieve it back quickly!

How old is your daughter? I think that is the first thing we need to know in order to answer that question. Prices on these items keeps going down, it might be worth it to buy an inexpensive regular one, not one just for kiddies. As for your grandmother's, I would say get one w/ a memory card. Those I know you can pop into the machines at the stores (Costco, WM, etc.) Check out www.cnet.com, there is a ton of info on electronics there, plus you can post questions to people who really know this stuff. Best of luck!

Last christmas I ended up buying a cheaper real digital camera for my son. This was after I was disapointed with the kids digital and returned it. The camera is still working to this day!

Hello R.,

I'm not sure how old your daughter is. That would make a huge difference. I am going to respond to your question regarding your grandmother. A few years ago my cousins and I wanted to purchase a digital camera for our grandmother (Mema). Our parents talked us out of it saying it would be too much for her (she is in her 70's). Needless to say, we didn't listen (imagine...kids not listening to their parents!). We bought her a Kodak digital camera and a memory card. I went online and printed out the entire user's manual just in case. She LOVES it! It was the best gift we ever bought. She doesn't have a computer either (though we cousins are considering that) but almost immediately after every event she goes straight to Walgreen's and prints her photos! The rest of us are doing good just to load them on our computers! She has even learned how to adjust the settings for different occasions. I highly recommend it!

Hi R., My 3 year old loves his digital camera from VTECH.
It's the orange "kidizoom camera" and I just think it is awesome. it took him no time at all to do all kinds of cool things with it and I think it hold way more photos then the others. and has way more features comes with all the software and all the attachments so you can download anywhere I think I payed $50 or $55 for it and be leave me I did my homework because I was not going to pay that much for something that could brake easily. if your leaning more for the Fisher Price I urge you to check this one out I really do think it's the better one. this is what you get...
* VTech Kidizoom Camera w/2 interchangeable faceplate's
* PC install CD-Rom w/additional features for the photo editor
" and you can edit a photo on the camera before you download"
* a/v cable, user's manual and a wrist strap
not to mention all the cool stuff you can add to your photo while your taking the pitcher. IE... if you want someone in the photo to have a viking hat or if you want a snow in the back ground just scroll to the wallpaper you want and then take your pic. I just love this camera and my son takes it everywhere. good luck and I hope you check this one out.

oh ya you can also take video's and add sound to reg photos. and it has 3 kid games on it tooo.

Maybe Consumer Reports has something to say about it. Usually, Fisher Price has some good toys and electronics, you are probably right. Amazon.com has alot of reviews on products but sometimes a product is split on recommendations so it can be confusing.
