Hyde Park Mom Seeking Allergist for 2 Year Old

My 2.5 yr old son has been to the dr. repeatedly for sinus congestion (sometimes w/ lowgrade fever)& itchy rash. I've been told it's a sinus infection & eczema but he recently began itching to the point it was keeping him up at night; he's begun itching his scalp & his congestion is still terrible (& yellow) after 2 diff. antibiotics which did nothing. We even had the dr. check for lice last wk. Now, to complicate it, he's got a new rash (blistery) on his inner thigh which looks like poison ivy. Ugh. I feel sure it's allergies but I don't know where to begin. I've read about cutting their diet & then adding foods back 1 by 1 month after month but I was hoping for a quicker solution to help him now. Does anyone have an allergist for children they love or any other helpful suggestions if they've been through this themselves?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all of your help! I had already scheduled an appt with Dr. Kayser (in the Dell Center) but couldn't get in til June but with all the positive reiews of her here I decided to wait. Well, they had a cancellation and we get in this Thursday to see her! Very excited about that. Thanks to a very kind Mamasource member, I'm going to try the Mangosteen juice and see if there are any positive effects here. I'm also very excited about that. I will let everyone know what the final diagnosis from Dr. Kayser is and if the Mangosteen juice works for us.

I know this doesn't explain the long term congestion and itchy, but the new might be chicken pox. (it starts with cold like symptoms) My 7 year old just got Chicken Pox within the last week. Even with the vaccine they can get an atypical outbreak. His first itchy / lesion was on the inside of his leg and then a few other spots showed up on different parts of his body. They will start off looking like a bug bite, will blister and then scab / crust over. However, if he's had the vaccine the spots can look different.
Like your son he's had a sinus infection for quite sometime. (however the two aren't related).
Also, when my friend's son was about your sons age he constantly was congested. The doctor said to try taking him off milk products for a while. The congestion cleared up.
I hope you find relief for your son soon.
I don't know of an allergist, but a wonderful dermatologist is Dr. Dano.

I am a mother also, but my nephew had the same problem...in his case they were linked-both allergies but different forms. His rash was allergies due to hives (which is another way allergies present) and I have had them and they itch horribly!-and present all over the body especially when its damp outside or there is a change in weather. Second the mucus and running nose with my nephew was purely allergies but nothing would get rid of them. His tonsils would swell not allowing his body to get rid of the bacteria and then he would get sick (fever and cold symptoms) because the tonsils were catching the bacteria from the mucus. He was on every allergy medicine known to man and it occasionally improved but nothing permanent. He ended up getting his tonsils removed at 2 years old ( 2 months ago) and is like a new person!! NO ALLERGIES (or they are not affecting him anymore) OR MUCUS!! I also noticed that when he came to Austin where the Cedar is higher he would get so stuffed up with mucus they would have to leave early becuase he could not breathe ( he lives in Houston)..its sounds like your child might not have as extreme case of allergies and that may be why its harder to pinpoint. This actually affected my nephews speech development (hurt for him to talk) so my suggestion is to take care of it before it gets too bad. Antibiotics will not do anything for allergies. I don't know any allergists in Austin but my doctor at Austin Diagnostic Clinic-Dr. Suffredini is AMAZING!! I highly recommend any of the doctors at ADC. I have seen several of them (for emergency visits) and they are all great! I am sure they have someone affiliated with the clinic they can send you to. Hope this help!

My prayers for a speeding recovery for your baby, My grandaughgters moved to the Austin area 2 yrs ago and they had these symptoms, my daughter took them to the dr and was told to give them clartin and some cream

She has had them on the mangosteen juice from xango and the allergies were gone within a day, no itching, and with no side effects. Look into the Xanthones of this fruit.
www.pubmed.gov is the National Library of medicines, search it and maybe you can look into this.

Hope you find a solution soon,
God bless,
Oly

I understand how you feel - my daughter has had unexplained rashes and eczema since she was a few months old. I really like Dr. Cook at central texas allergy and asthma - http://www.centraltexasallergy.com/. He is on North Lamar really close to Hyde Park (across from Central Market). He was really caring with my daughter and listened to our assortment of symptoms. I would definitely try an allergist, but they may ask you to try keeping a food diary for a few weeks - write what he is eating and what symptoms come up. In the meantime, I really like Dr. Smith's rash-n-all cream for her eczema.

Good luck!

My advice would be to quit dairy first. That's the usual suspect. If that doesn't work, I would go to a chiropractor that does food allergy stuff and let them find out the problem. They are so quick and helpful with food allergies!

Try to get an appointment with Jackee T. Kayser, Pediatric Allergy , Asthma and Immunology at Dell. ###-###-####
Eczema is usually a sign of a food allergy. When you make your appt explain what is going on with your child and maybe they will get you in sooner than later.
I would start by taking your child off of milk products first.
Also one of our doctors said that children's sinus infections are more difficult to get rid of and an extended course of antibiotics is often needed to rid children of a sinus infection. Could your child be allergic to the antibiotics? You have to think about every aspect of the course of events to figure out all the pieces. The only thing safe for kids with eczema is cortizone. Good Luck!
