How to Clean a Wet Mattress

Yesterday morning I woke to find my three year old in bed with us and a very wet bed. I immediately woke him up, put him in the shower, stripped the bed, and started cleaning the mattress. I used a mixture of warm water and vinegar, but I didn't know how much vinegar to use. Later in the day when it was dry I sprinkled baking soda on it. However, when I went to bed last night I could definitely still smell a nasty combination of urine and vinegar. Any suggestions on how to clean the mattress?

Professionals. Many carpet cleaning companies also clean mattresses. They use a special sanitizing solution and steam cleaner. I think I used Daisy Cleaners in Apple Valley when an old dog urinated on our mattress. I was happy with them. I also have some carpet cleaners I can highly recommend, although I don't know if they do mattresses. I keep water proof covers on all of our mattresses now.

You can certainly checkout a professional but you may also want to look at treatments that you find in pet stores. There is a product called AntiIckyPoo. It is meant to get out stains and odors from urin, vomit, and other bodily functions. I used it on spots from when my cat had a urinary infection and it worked.Since then I have used it on areas where my daughter has accidently oooped and it worked wonderfully. It has natural enzymes that supposedly dissolve the nasty stuff. Good luck.

I have been in the same situation - the best thing I've found is "Nature's Miracle" which is an enzyme solution sold in pet stores to remove stains and urine odors from pet "accidents". It is specially designed to get rid of urine odors and stains in particular. It worked wonders!
Good luck!

Try ChemDry carpet cleaners. They have a urine treatment and can deep suction with high powered vacuums.

I don't know how desperate you are...but maybe use a carpet cleaner, to get a little deeper? And maybe air it out outdoors? I've never done this; I clicked because I have wondered the same! Oh--and something we did accidentally--invest in a slightly-better mattress cover. We had a very basic one, and it ripped along the sides, so we kept that one as a bottom one and bought a new one at Target--it's not waterproof, but they didn't have the most basic one, so we bought one step up. Our youngest threw up in our bed and we pulled everything off in a hurry and it didn't get anywhere close to going through the top mattress pad.
