How Long Can It Take to Get Your Period After a Miscarriage Without a D & C?

About six weeks ago I had taken a home pregnancy test, which was positive, and went to the doctor four days later. After the physical exam he said, "I cannot confirm that you are pregnant." So he did an ultrasound. There was a sac, but nothing in it. The blood test came back positive. Two days later, I miscarried. We were very sad, but not nearly as much as if there'd been a baby. I declined the D & C, because I wasn't worried about finding a baby "in there."

Once everything was over, we decided to try again. Normally we'd have waited, but we've agreed to stop trying if I'm not pregnant by the end of the year. So it's six weeks later and I haven't gotten my period. I'm frankly too concerned that it's just my hormones not straightening out to get excited that I might be pregnant. On the other hand, I'm taking the prenatals I'd gotten from last time and avoiding caffeine(!!!) just in case.

Has anyone had a long wait for the next period after a miscarriage? I've had miscarriages before, but they were before my son, and I always had the D & C. Any guidance you can offer will be appreciated.

So What Happened?

Just wanted to thank everyone for the input. We found out today that we are indeed pregnant (about 7.5 weeks). We are ecstatic!

I had to have a D&C after my miscarriage, and it took me about 6/7 weeks... and after that I would get my period every 2 weeks... HORRIBLE... until I started relaxing a bit more and not thinking about it. It took about 4 months for my period to become regular again.

It took me almost 8 weeks, when I had a situation similar to yours. Good luck.

It took me 6 or 7 weeks to have a period with miscarriage no d&c. Take a pregnancy test if it helps put your mind at ease. Also, I highly recommend a book called "taking charge of your fertility". By charting with the natural family planning method I knew I was preg by my charts with no need to wonder.

Hi S.. I am sorry for your loss.
To answer your question - Although I never went through a 'natural' miscarriage (I had D&C/D&E 3x after my losses), I do know that it can take awhile for your body to get back on track, esp. if you are anxious or thinking about it!
I'd just go off the BC and see what happens. Try not to focus on the end of the year, or saying 'we are not going to try after this year'. We said that after our 2nd loss and we ended up trying for one more year, which surprised us both! :-) Once our youngest reached age 5, however, we decided not to try anymore.
So all I am trying to say is, relax and try not to worry about the timing so much, because it will happen when it happens. If you REALLY want another child then another few months (or perhaps even a whole year) won't really matter that much, in the long run, right?
Oh, and I second the acupuncturist recommendation. I cannot say enough good things about my acupuncturist and she specializes in women's health and fertility. http://lauriemorse.com/acupuncture.htm
Good luck and Merry Christmas! -Suzanne

Hi, I am afraid I don't have good news for you-had a friend with a similar situation, dhe is all natural, non invasive- took her 6 months to pass the mass completely and very painful and then another 2 /3 months to get her period. They didnt/dont really want children so this timing wasn't a problem for them, but for you -since time is of the essence...you may want to check w your ob-also-acupuncture may helps- good luck and hoping you be touched with fertility dust and concieve soon :)

Dear S.,

Yes, sometimes the hormones get quite imbalanced after a miscarriage. Find a local acupuncturist who does a lot of work in women's health issues, and go for biweekly treatments for about 3 months. Then, if given herbs as well, you will not only restore hormonal balance but also optimize the reproductive system to avoid future miscarriages.

It varries by the person. Some people (most) are fertile 2 weeks later (the last study I read had the average woman having regular unprotected sex pregnant 2-3 times a year and not know it). For others... it can take several months. Depends on what the hormones are doing.
