How Far Is the Drive to Your Childs School?

I drive 30 min there and 30 min back. When my kids were in different grades I traveled to the school 4 times a day. It was so worth it too me.
I would not send them to my area school......so this was worth it too me. Now we are over the heardle and we go twice a day. We do spend a lot of time testing for spelling and reading in the car. But it makes it a better afternoon when it is mostly done.

My son attends a charter school that is easily 20 min each way. When my husband was in Afghanistan, I had to drive him to school and pick him up after work. It is worth every minute of the drive to know that he is in the best school for him. Yes we have to get up earlier than most but I think it is worth it. All of my siblings and I went to private school 1st through 12th grade and my parents had to drive us 10 -15 min each way every day. They thought it was worth it too. Good Luck

It sounds worth the drive and change in routine. If I were in your situation, I would drive to the new school.

We moved from aurora to oswego when my sons were in 5th and 6th grades. they went to private catholic school in aurora. We opted to continue to drive them back and forth (about a 10 minute drive) thru 8th grade but our youngest son was just starting kindergarten. we put him in the public grade school across the street from the new house. when oldest son hit highschool he continued on to private highschool. that one was a half hour or more depending on traffic away. I would and will be doing it again starting this fall. youngest son is starting highschool and has chosen to go to the private catholic highschool. so will be doing the driving again.

My child's school is about 10 minutes away.
I would drive farther if by choice we chose another school, private school.
But like Laurie A., the schools in our area are excellent. So we are lucky.

My son's school is 5 mins away but he rides the bus (we also live in an area where we have very good public schools) , my daughters preschool is 5 mins away and it only takes that long because of the traffic lights. I used to drive my son to a school 25 mins away (up to 35 in traffic).

Well, our zoned school is right around the corner. However, our 6yr daughter goes to a school for gifted and high achievers. It's about 15 minutes away in the morning, but getting home in the afternoon traffic takes us about 30 minutes. =0) Our son's daycare is also 15 minutes away. Both are in the opposite direction of our work. However, my husband and I both feel strongly about our children going exactly where is best for THEM.........not what's most convenient for US. I'm sure my son will be going to the zoned school right around the corner, but my daughter will remain at her special school because it is what's in HER best interest. That's our job as parents, right? =0)

LUCKILY, I can see their school from our porch. It is a very good school, so I wouldn't want to change it. BUT... I as a child NEVER went to a school that was less than 15 min away! Some schools it took over 30 min to get there. My mom was picky!

Your kids school is one of the most important decisions to make. I'd easily drive 30 minutes. Luckily I found THE best charter school located at a church ;) - I drive 5 miles BUT I would drive 30.

Our kids education does not only depend on the school. Parents need to be INVOLVED.
It's sad.......I am the PSO President at our school and it's pretty much the sae 10 of use vonunteering etc.

My opinion is that any distance is worth the drive for your child to get a better education. My daughters school is about 20-25 minutes from our house and I have no problem driving that distance each way knowing that my daughter is getting a better education than she would at a school closer to our house. We have open enrollment in the 3 surrounding school districts here so we can take our children to any of the schools in the area. My daughter has Autism and the school that is in our subdivision that is less than a half mile from our house could not offer her the special services she requires (even though it is required by law) so I took her to one of the best schools in the area where they can provide her the services she needs. I am 100% happy with the choice I made to have my daughter go to this school. The changes you and your child will need to make to go to the new school will not matter compared to the education your child will be getting. The improved educational experience will far outweigh having to get up earlier, spending more on gas or your child having to make new friends. The future will be better for your son if you get him into a better school now.

We drive 30 minutes each way to private school (no bus service available). Admittedly, we are looking for a house closer to the school, but the market for selling ours is just so bad right now.

3 minutes to all 3 levels of school. . All public schools are excellent where we are.

About 15 minutes (if they went to the neighborhood school, it would be about 3).
If I thought it was really worth it, 30 minutes.

I drive 10 miles to my daughter's charter school in Gilbert. It is well worth the gas usage in my Expedition!

If it were me, part of the decision would also include whether or not your son has after school activities to get to and if he can do homework well in the car. Also, is there anyone you can carpool with? 30 min. really isn't that far unless you have other places to be and are in a time crunch.

I'm driving 30 minutes (thank you Prius) to my daughter's private school. We have friends in our area, but I won't send her to the school down the street unless there is a dramatic change in school funding. Never thought I'd do private, but looking at the public school curriculum lately, not what it was when I went to school. Hope this helps!

It is preschool, but about 15 to 20 minutes away. We were going to the one 2 minutes away, but opted for the other one, even though it is the opposite direction from my work.

My daughter's school is only about 3 blocks away - so the "drive" is about 2-3 min & the walk is less the 7 min. We do like walking when the weather is nice. My son (4 1/2) goes to preschool about 15-20 min away... but he gets a bus ride to preschoool. So, I don't have to make the drive... but we are looking at trying to get my 2 1/2 yr old into the new preschool - in the new elementary building my daughter is in now & my 4 1/2 yr old will be in next year.

They do offer open enrollment in our city, but so far I haven't found a school I'd reather send them to. We moved into our house before we had kids, but even in the old building - I always like how this elementary school was ran... so it did have some play when we bought the house 7 yrs ago (about 2 weeks before I found out I was expecting).

If you know the new building your son would be going to - ask parents what they think. Parents are always the best at letting you know what happens in the school. If you don't like what you hear & are willing to drive - then take him to the other one.

So you know - it isn't just the school the kids go to that makes the difference... it's also how much the parents help the kids as well. Even in a "bad" school a kids can learn if parents help them out & work with them at home.

I drive 20 mins one way. I plan on moving him back to the local school next year though because the school I am taking him to is not as academically advanced as our local school is.

When the girls were in a private school in VA we drove about 30-40 minutes to get there. We had carpools in the area though. I actually contemplated driving 5 hours to the same school when we moved to NC, but tHe oldest is in the local high school 4 miles away.
