It’s a red cotton t-shirt that we took on a long flight and something broke and spilled on it now it’s covered in black mold spots ... it’s my favorite game shirt... I’ve washed it once and it didn’t touch them ...

What can I do next?

I had to get mold stains out of a black/white/orange hockey jersey. I wish I could narrow down what of the many things I did actually worked, but I don't know if it was the last step or a combination of the steps. At the end of the day, I was able to salvage the jersey. Here is what I tried:

Soaking in OxyClean
Fels-naptha soap rubbed onto the spots
Soaking in vinegar
Rubbing with a vinegar/baking soda paste
Soaking in borax
Rubbing with a borax paste
Rubbing in Clorox 2 stain remover
Soaking in Clorox 2
Dotting directly with bleach - I started on the white areas and then was like "screw it, let's see how it does on the other colors" and the other colors didn't get bleached out, which surprised me but might be due to the athletic fabric. I used a q-tip to dab and then rinsed quickly. This seemed to be the step that was most effective. When I gave it a final wash with detergent and Oxy Clean, it looked good.

Welcome to mamapedia!

It may be your favorite shirt but it's most likely a "goner".

I have tried using the Tilex Mold and Mildew remover on clothes - it worked on two but not the other two. this was YEARS ago when my loving, wonderful husband but milk soaked baby clothes in the hamper (that I didn't use!!) and they were in there for about 2 weeks...yikes.

If after trying a few methods the mold is still there and/or the shirt is ruined then you'll have to trash it and look to buy a new shirt.
Clean out your travel bag too - you don't want mold spores spreading.
When my mom use to travel she always put things that could leak/break in ziplock bags so the mess could not spread inside her luggage if the worst happened.
