Home/natural Remedies for Headaches

My husband had eye surgery almost 2 weeks ago for a detached retina. He has had a headache ever since. It is a very common side effect, but annoying nonetheless. He doesn't want to keep taking pain meds. He currently alternates between Vicadin, Motrin and Tylenol with Motrin being the most effective (down to just one a day of whichever one he chooses that day). I am looking for other ways to ease the pain. It isn't a tremendous amount of pain but it fairly constant unless he takes something to take the edge off. We saw the doctor today and he said the eye is healing properly, but slowly and it could take MONTHS to heal (and months of headaches). The sooner we get him off the meds altogether the better.

Anything suggestions?

Thank you!
J.

You can do a little bit of peppermint extract (or peppermint or eucalyptus oil from a body store) on your temples. Being that he had eye surgery, you need to be careful with this one. There is something about what it does to your senses. massage it straight above the middle of your eye, 1/2 way between eyebrow and hairline on your forehead OR just in back of your hairline on your temples where your upper jaw comes together when you bite and you have that soft-ish spot.
AND in the back of your neck.

Again - something about the scent.

I hope your hubs feels better.

The pressure point for headaches is between the thumb and the forefinger . Have him pinch that area on the top and bottom of the hand at the same time. Or you can do this for him. . I used to attach a clothes pin. Hee, hee..

Also sometimes caffeine can help stop a headache. Tea, coffee or soda.

And for me a cold or hot pad behind my neck cam help take the pain away.

Sorry he is not feeling well.

I have an herb filled packet thing that can either be heated or frozen for headaches and pains. Mine is for the neck shape, but I use it for headaches, backaches, tummy aches...

I got it at the Natural Balance mall kiosk where they sell the natural remedy heating pads. Expensive, but worth it. I've had it 8 years now and still love it. You can buy it, or even make your own. Mine has rosemary and lavender in it, among other herbs. Lots of tutorials online if you google it, or you can buy homemade ones on Etsy.com. or go to the mall and get it form the kiosk.

Asian Pressure points, Japanese or Chinese. Not near the eyes.

Or he can try acupuncture.

See a Naturopath Doctor. But make sure, it is explicitly explained that he had eye surgery for a detached retina.

Or, Turmeric, is a known pain relieving & natural pain supplement.
Capsule form. Natural food stores.
It even helps Arthritis etc.
Look it up online.

Vicodin is highly habit forming and addictive.

I would ask his doctor first but when I get migraines sometimes it helps for me to have something warm on my head (also put it on my eyes but with his surgery that's why I would for sure ask first!) I use one of those rice filled type bags that can be heated in the microwave. They are relatively simple to make but I've also seen similar things at Bed Bath & Beyond. I've also found that sometimes aromatherapy helps. I purchase mine premixed but it's usually got peppermint & lavender in it. Good luck!

There is something called Migralief that can be found at many drug stores that might be worth a shot. It's a mix of various herbs and vitamins (mostly B vitamins I believe). I get migraines regularly and my neurologist has suggested I try this although I haven't yet.
