HELP! Very Bad Diaper Rash on 8 Mo Old Girl

For the past 2 mos, my baby girl pretty much has had a constant dipaer rash. I recently tried switching to chlorine free diapers and it seems a little better but there are little sores(blister like) around the sides near her inner thigh. They have burst so are like open sores and I am sure they are hurting her. I also don't want her to have diaper rash scars for life. WHAT CAN I DO?? Why does she always have this horrible rash? I do not feed her juice. She eats formula and ocassionally baby food, mashed potato, mashed avocado, and teething biscuits.

** I should also add that the rash is no longer in the genital or anus area but is now only near the top of diaper and the sides near the inner thigh...as if the elastic of the diaper is rubbing her raw. They are little blisters rather than an all over red rash**

What can I do next?

I hope it clears up! I would start giving her more food choices though. Try bananas - she's old enough to eat real bananas mashed up. Good luck.

I agree with the other mom, I would go to the pediatrician! My daughter had terrible diaper rash recently from a bout of diarreaha, with sores everywhere. The Dr. ended up giving us a prescription for a special cream. He also advised the use of a cream called Triple Paste, it's in a white jar or tube w/ blue writing, I tell you this b/c it was a little hard for me to find but Target & wal-Mart both have it. Also we had to change her diaper constantly, b/c any amount of wetness was making it worse. We used the larger night time diapers at night, & slathering the diaper cream... still ended up getting her up in the night just to change her. The Dr.also told us to avoid wipes during this time and use a warm damp wash cloth. I know that has to be painful, hopefully your Dr. can help you guys get it under control & help your little one feel better. Good Luck.

Take her to the doctor in the morning!! It sounds exactly like the staph infection both my neice and nephew dealt with!It was in the exact same area. It looked like pimples almost, and then they would pop and leave a sore. Please get her in just to be safe, it just does not sound like a diaper rash, or even a yeast infection! Let us know how it goes! ~A.~

Maybe call the nurse at the pediatrician's office and discuss this with them. We have switched to California Baby Diaper Rash Cream. It is all natural and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties to it, plus it is "calming" to the rash. We found it at Target and love it.

Good luck, I hope she is better really fast.

I would make an appointment with the doctor immediately. Those blisters sound so painful.

I have 2 kiddos, both with VERY sensitive skin. Both had issues with diaper rash. The things that seemed to help for me were using corn starch rather then anytpe of baby power, just good old fashion in the baking isle corn starch. Sprinkle generously with each diaper change. Also, it seemed that Huggies was the brand that was best for both of mine in that regard as well. There was an occasion that I would strip out the blue lining along the legs and tummy to help with the rubbing. As a last resort and before they started walking I'd bath in an oatmeal bath and then let them air dry on a blanket for as long as possible (a couple of hours) before putting a diaper on.
Just a note, you may also check with your pediatrician, yeast infections sometimes have that texture and appearance and those need medication, cream etc to get rid of.

Good luck! E.

It is probably more than just a diaper rash at this point, so I would take her to the doctor. My friend's son just got a really bad rash that she thought was related to what he was eating, but it turned out to be a yeast infection which cleared up quickly with the prescription cream he gave her. You might try to use cloth diapers. Many babies find relief in cloth after suffering constant diaper rash.

Yes, go to the pedi! It does sound like yeast to me though. I have fought that with both my kids. Do not diagnose it yourself though. The first time at least a doctor should take a look. He or she will probably tell you to use the Lotrimin AF everyone else mentioned. Mine had me make a paste with the Lotrimin and Hydrocortisone and Vaseline. It works like a charm. We refer to it as Mircale Paste in our house. Even if it is yeast, you will probably need something to protect those open sores. When it happened to us, we were prescribed Bactroban, which is a prescription strength Neosporin. You don't want those wounds getting infected making it all even worse. It could also be some type of food or contact allergy so please have her throughly checked. We also give baths with baking soda to help ease the pain, and let her go without a diaper when you can to let the area air dry. You said you tried Chlorine free diapers, did you also try latex free?

You should visit with your pediatrician about the rash. It sounds like it could be a yeast infection though normally one would not expect it to be on the inner thighs. At any rate, one of my daughters had horrible diaper rashes, and one of the best things that helped was the Aquaphor - it's a really thick cream that will act almost like a band-aid. If it is a yeast infection, my pediatrician recommended using Lotrimin (the stuff for athlete's foot); perhaps alternating the two different kinds each time you change the diaper. Have you checked with the pediatrician to be sure it's not eczema (allergic reaction)?

Try Lotramin AF. My ped started Elizabeth on this when nothing else worked. It is an anti-fungal treatment. It works like a charm. My daughter never has diaper rash now.

Also, be sure you dry her completely after you wipe her. The wet wipes leave moisture which has a tendency to feed fungal or yeast infections. I always wipe her and then keep dry baby wash cloths on hand to dry her.
