HELP, I Can't Find a Gate to Fit Our Stairs!!

My 8 month old loves to crawl towards the stairs and climb up them!! We have what is called "Royal" stairs, which basically means they very wide (66" inches to be exact!) Not only that, there is molding on the bottom half against the wall. And stair has a lip on it which is making it nearly impossible to find a gate that fits!! I have searched online at step ahead, babycenter.com and have been to babies r us numerous times. Just when I think we have found one that works we take it out of the box and find that something doesn't work with our stairs! The regular ones are too small, and the oversized ones are too big. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

Ok, this may sound a bit silly but in your special case, is there someone that could make you 1 ? I have a front porch that you can come in from 2 different sides. The far end 1 always made me nervous because that was closest to cars. So my Father-in-Law made me 1 that fit that spot! If all else has failed, maybe ths is something you'll need to think about having done??
Good Luck!

Hi,
I know a daycare provider that blocks her stairs with a piece of furniture. She has a changing table on wheels but maybe there is something else you can think of. Stairs are such a pain!

You might have to block off an entire area.
Here are a few links for gates. The first one has a safety consultant request form for your area if you want someone to come to your house and offer suggestions.

Try www.amazon.com
I had the same problem... only my stairs were wider. Amazon had a variety of gates for odd shaped openings and wide openings... and different configurations. The review from customers are really great too. I always have found great things from them, for any baby items and have never had any problems. If anything, call or e-mail the manufacturer and find out all details before purchasing. But, like the other suggestion... having someone make you one could be a great solution!

I had the same problem! We had to go to home depot and buy a two by four to tie wrap against the stairs so the gate would fit. It was ugly but it worked.

Try the old fashion accordian gates by attaching eye hook anchors to the wall and banister and jaw type clips to either side of the gate (I am not sure of the technical name of the hooks/clips but your local hardware store will know). The gate can stretch to fit across the opening of the stairs, but can be easily removed or opened. We actually had to use this for our dogs and still have the gate for my small nieces when they visit. By placing the eye hooks at both the top and bottom of the stairs you can move the gate to wherever you are in the house to keep her safe with you .
