Heat, Pregnancy, and Working Out

Hi there,

It is currently 88 degrees here but there is a nice breeze. I am fighting my desire to go jogging outside today since I missed a morning window of opportunity when it was a bit cooler and now am getting very jittery. I am only 6 1/2 weeks pregnant but am trying to be very conscious of overheating while exercising. I did end up jogging a week or two ago when it "felt okay" only to realize afterwards that it was 100 degrees outside, and since them am really trying to watch the temperature. I would like to keep up the active workouts as long as possible this time around but wonder what everyone else does with the heat. I plan to start jogging in the mornings before work when it is cooler since I can't seem to stay asleep past 6, but so far have been too groggy. Any other coping tactics? (I carry water when I walk/jog. I usually alternate a half-mile jogging/half-mile walking, etc.) What motivates you in the morning when you would rather stare at the wall with your cup of coffee?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh, I certainly wish I could swim! :) My workout opportunities are limited to in the house when I've got the kids (after work and on the weekends) or when my husband is home (Saturdays, a few evenings since he works most of them, and when everyone else is sleeping in the mornings). The heat is the only thing keeping me inside for now--I tend to overdo things and am trying very hard to behave since I know raising your body temperature too much or your heart rate too high is not good during pregnancy. I have never been a morning workout person but that seems to be the best time, especially since I keep waking up early, I'm just not sure how to motivate myself. That might even help me sleep better. Going anywhere or paying for a membership someplace are not options for now but maybe someday. :)

If you are not new to exercising, you don't really need to restrict the time you exercise, unless the heat is bothering you. While exercising take note of how you feel, make sure you are well hydrated and periodically check your elevated heart rate (when you swap from jogging to walking is a good time to do this). Body temperatures over 100 degrees are cause for concern, but in my experience, unless you are doing an all out exercise session, it's not that common to get your body temp up that high. Take your temp before and after exercising to see where you're at. If your temp isn't rising a lot, don't worry too much, if it tends to jump up, take frequent breaks or opt for a day of swift walking instead of jogging. Also, feel your belly ;) if it's cool, don't worry your sweat is doing it's job :D if it's warm, that's good, but if it feels hot/feverish start your cool-down and finish up for the day.

Hi!
First of all, CONGRATS on the pregnancy!
I am in my 18th week, almost 19 weeks! I too, love to run and keep active. Let me tell you, the first trimester was horrible. INTENSE morning sickness and extreme fatigue. I tried to work through it. I also found that late evening was better for me to get any exercise in. Plus its much cooler in the evening, around 7:00pm and now that it stays light out even later, 8pm works too. We have a beautiful trail right down the street so its packed with people running, biking and walking there dogs. So i still feel safe running later at night.
Its been in the high 90's to 100's here for the past 4 weeks. I have been staying indoors on my elliptical and treadmill. Its just wayyyyy too hot out. But I also have a pool, so If I can get a few laps in during the day, I count that as exercise.
Do whatever you can to stay active, it will help you feel better during your pregnancy. Good luck with everything!

How about instead of jogging, walk the mall..........Or anywhere with air conditioning.........If you have to job, see about getting a membership to a gym if you can for free for a month or something.

You can also go to schools and use their track sometimes, or maybe find an indoor track.........

I would freeze a bottle of water, and find something to carry it in.....it will slowly melt giving you cold water, and you can always put more water in it from a water fountain.....

Good Luck and congrats on the baby......take care.

is there a pool near you? perhaps you could do that. Some even have early morning swim times.

Hi M., Congratulations! I am an older mom of 5. I think it is great to exercise but this heat is extreme. Can you find something to do in the house on the very hot days. There are any number of CD's to exercise to right at home.In the early months before you even look pregnant can be deceiving. You don't want to harm your baby or yourself. My best, Grandma Mary

I definitely would not jog in the heat. I think by the time the cool weather
comes you will have more energy. If you do not feel like it, then don't
do it. Maybe your body is trying to tell you to just relax.
