Healthy Snacks for Toddlers

I have an in-home preschool and childcare and I am struggling to find creative ideas and menu items for snack time. I don't want to always give the children crackers and cheese, etc. and have tried numerous combinations of fruit, crackers, raisins, cereal, etc. They seem like they are bored with what I am serving, so I was hoping to get some feedback on what others feed their children. Most of the children are not picky eaters, I think that they would be open to anything 'new' and unique! Thank you for your help!

My son's favorite snack is a tortilla (we use whole wheat) with some peanut butter spread on it and few raisins or cut up dried apricots sprinkled on the peanut butter. Roll it up and it's ready to eat.

I found this idea from Baby Talk Magazine. Slice bananas and roll them in rice crispies.

What about quesadillas? Friut salad with cool wip is always fun!

Hi! We did some fun snacks last year that went with what we were studying. For example, when we read, "If you give a pig a pancake" we used those frozen pancakes and warmed them up and each kid put peanut butter (for the paste), banana slices and raisins on them to make a pig's face. When we were studying pumpkins in the fall we hade a taste test day where they sampled three different things made from pumpkin so we could graph which one they liked the best. When we studied farm we made homemade butter and they put it on bread slices. I know these aren't any long term solutions to the snack issue but they might spice it up for a day or two!

When my son got tired of the same old grind of cheese and crackers and the fruit snacks I started changing things up a little for him. He has yet to get tired of apple sauce with teddy bear grahams in it (got the idea from Dennys), toast with peanut butter, I also make him cheesey toast when the crackers are a not an option, just melt a piece of cheese between two slices of toast and cut them into individual squares. I have learned that yes he enjoys something different so I try to rotate those into a weekly thing for him so he never gets the same thing twice in one week unless he specifically asks for it. The big one which has entirely surprised me is celery if I give him celery and some of the cheesey salsa sauce both disappear within minutes make sure it's the mild sauce but it seems to work with my son. :) Good Luck.

Hey Janelle,
Depending on allergies, my kids like celery or crackers with peanut butter, or cream cheese. Also vegetables and ranch dip, frozen whole fruit pops, or string cheese. Good Luck!

My kids like dried papaya, pineapple, apples, and mangoes that we get from Sprouts in the bulk bins. They also enjoy yogurt covered pretzels and raisins. We sometimes make grilled cheese sandwiches in the waffle maker (we have a square waffle iron with space for 4 waffles, so we put buttered bread and cheese topped with more buttered bread and then close the lid)...we call them "grilled cheese waffles" and we usually have tomato soup with it. We also make small sandwiches and have tea parties. I let my older daughter help make cookies while my younger one is napping. We use whole wheat flour and fructose.

How about all types of mini muffins? Cornbread with butter and honey. Let them make fruit kabobs or a fruit pizza. Homemade frozen yogurt pops. Carrots with ranch (use canned carrot slices for young kids who don't like the crispy ones). Quickbreads (banana, zucchini, pumpkin, lemon poppyseed, etc). Turkey & cheese pinwheels (tortilla, mayo, turkey, cheese, roll up and slice into wheels). Mini pita pocket sandwiches. Cold pasta, cheese, and meat with italian dressing. Apples & p.b. Pigs in a blanket. Pretzels and yogurt dip. Granola & yogurt. Tuna salad on crackers. Fruit sandwich with quickbread. Bean dip or hummus with pita chips or veggies. Waffle sandwiches.

I have a wonderful snack that my kids, plus my husband love to eat. Cheerios mixed with yogurt, my kids love the honey nut, and myself and Brian love the oat clusters cheerios mixed. I think that it is good for you, and also fun for the kids to mix it up.

Good luck and have fun mixing!!!

It looks like you already have some great ideas, but to add to the list... English muffins w/ cheese melted on them, cut into triangles, apples & peanut butter, goldfish, teddy grahams, pickle pinwheels (dry a pickle off, spread w/ cream cheese, wrap a slice of ham around it, cut into coins), sweet potato chips. Just be creative and remember that with kids that aren't too picky, you can do lots of different snacks that will help them make wise choices as adults!

Take so lunch meat and a pretzel roll up the lunch meat cut into bite size pieces and then stab a pretzel through the rolls and you have a yummy snack (plus they can help you make it) you can add cheese or instead of the pretzel to hold it together you could you tortilla. Tortillas can also be heated in the microwave (not hot just warm) then spread a little butter on it then sprinkle cinnamon and sugar roll and cut into bit size pieces. Those are just two quick ideas that the kids can also help with.
Have fun
