i just finally got health insurance after 3 yrs and i plan on finding a general doctor and a good gyno by me for my birth control and all that jazz but i was wondering which i should do first, go to a general dr for a physical (along with all the lab work and stuff) BEFORE going to the gyno for the pap and birth control things, because i need to fix my hormonal imbalance. or just go right to the gyno and then the general dr, my last pack of birth control that i have will run out in a month from when my insurance starts

I dont think im going to schedule both for the same day, will probably shoot for 2 weeks apart,

What can I do next?

Many ob/gyn doctors act as the primary care doctor too. Do you have one in mind? I'd call and ask what they suggest.

You could just get a good primary doc that can take care of your OB needs as well. You really only need an OB if you have a specific health situation that requires a specialist. If it's just standard preventative tests and birth control, your primary can take care of it for you. Much easier.

<grin> You're still in no insurance mode of having to pick one or the other and waiting months between them to save up.

$20 copays

Which mean you can see both the same week, instead of saving up $600.

Aka, do both and order doesn't really matter.

check the wording of the insurance coverage. for me, if my pap is done at the same time as my 'well woman' physical then I can get one done yearly. If it is done seperate from my physical, then its covered every 2 years.

I see my GP for most of my stuff and a GYN if the GP thinks its necessary. I'm pretty sure a GP can prescribe birth control.

Also, again, depending on the wording of your insurance, and your copays, you may need a referral from a GP to even see a GYN and be covered.

I don't know, I always used the same doc for it all. My DO did my pap and beast exam too. I didn't have multiple docs. If there was a female issue that concerned the doc he would refer me but if it all came back normal there wasn't really any need to specialize for me.

My primary care doctor did all my paps intill I had an abnormal one and had to get some dysplasia removed, now I have to see a specialist. But if you have had a history of normal paps your primary care doctor can do it.

Get a GP first, then a referral to an OBGYN.
In my GPs office, they can do a pelvic exam also, so sometimes it is "one stop shopping". LOL

Schedule both appointments for the same day!

Call and set up appointments with both right away. Though I must say, I have always found getting a full physical/labs with the GP to take MUCH longer. S/he will probably want an initial appointment first, and then, depending on your health issues/needs, it could take a few months to get in for a full physical and have blood work done.
That's been my experience anyway, even with "good" insurance :(

I don't one will really interfere with the other. Go ahead, schedule both as soon as you can, on whatever dates that work for you!
