Have You Used an Air Cleaner or Ionizing Air Filter?

I've heard the same thing about ozone. I think if the room is super dusty, you are going to have a lot of dust exposure even if the air is clean. (Basically, every time you pick something up, you put dust right near your face, right?) I'd reccommend wearing a mask and getting some outside air in the room, even if it means putting on a light jacket. I think clean air flow is much easier to establish with partly open windows than with an air filter, especially if you can open more than one window, even just a crack. By the way, there are some reusable, washable dust masks available online that might be more comfortable (although possibly less effective, not sure) than the heavy duty ones from the hardware store.

I have been living in Beijing where the air quality is ridiculously bad, so most people use an air purifier inside. Most people use either the IQ Air (which is the cadillac of the air purifier, and can be used for commercial or medical spaces), or Blue Air, which is also supposedly very good, but less pricey.
I have an IQ unit in my living dining area, because it is large, and three Sharp units in each of the bedrooms. I like the Sharp units because they come with an integrated humidifier, and they also adapt to the ambient level of dust. In other words, if you move something and raise dust at the same time, the machine will pick up in speed. The machine is more silencious then the IQ one, also smaller, and of course less pricey.
All machines do not make a difference if you have carpet or hardwood floor, the important is the size of your room, in volume, as it need to have the capacity to change its air over a certain period of time. The supplier will be able to help you determine what is the right model for you. As these units are not so cheap, usually you can find a sales person to help you choose.

Can't give you much info except, don't use an Ionizer. It creates Ozone which is bad for the environment and bad for asthmatics.

I saw you hadn't gotten much for answers, so even though mine is different, I figured I'd share. I have a Hyla, which is an air purification system as well as vacuum cleaner, etc. It's expensive, yes, but even on a very tight budget this is one purchase I'm very happy with! We bought our Hyla almost a year ago. Some of the benefits are that it is a vacuum, and it does a GREAT job of picking up dirt, hair, etc, without picking up all the carpet fibers. I had a bagless vacuum before my Hyla and I'd notice every time all the carpet fibers. So with the Hyla seeing that it was really the dirt, hair, etc, I was SO thrilled. It also has a hard floor attachment and it can be used on furniture. I currently have 3 dogs. Thought one was dying, got another, and the one seemed to rebound, so we have 3. They have short hair, but they're still 3 dogs, and the Hyla does wonders for my floors. I recently had to take apart my dryer and saw how dusty it was, so I cleaned that out with no problem. When someone's sick, we run the Hyla as an air cleaner in their room, then we put it in front of the air filter system for the house and turn the fan on. It makes the whole house smell fresh and really does a great job of cleaning the air. I'm actually going to run it today for a bit in the living room b/c I've been sick for a week and my hubby doesn't vacuum as often as I do, nor does he put the dogs out to play as much as I do. If you get it, I suggest running it for no more than 30 mins at a time and then letting it cool down some. And for vacuuming, especially the first couple times you use it or if it's like after a week of vacation or something, vacuum really slowly. You'll be amazed (and maybe a little disgusted) at how much it picks up. The guy came to show it to us and the day before my husband vacuumed the room twice. After the demonstration we felt there was no way we couldn't get it for the health of our family. I know this must seem like a commercial, but I promise it's not.
