Has Anyone's Child Had the Following Symptoms...

Cloudy urine and bad mouth odor? My 3 yr old has had this for a while and I am not sure how concerned I should be. She also has really dry skin (patches of very dry skin in certain areas). She has always had dry skin and the pediatrician never seemed concerned about that... but I don't know if it can be related to the other? She seems normal otherwise, right height, weight, no signs of autism. Has anyone's child had this happen to them before or have any ideas of what it can be?

So What Happened?

First of all thanks for everyone's response. I became a little paranoid w/some of the responses based on the symptoms. I called the pediatrician this morning and was able to get my daughter in this afternoon. My daughter was tested (using her urine) for several infections/diseases and they found out that she has a UTI (even though there was no burning/pain when she urinates). No sugar in her urine... which is great. My daughter drinks a lot of water... about 30 oz a day (plus she drinks 16 oz of milk a day and juice once in a while). In regards to the bad mouth odor the pediatrician didn't seem too concern... just asked me to use ACT (rinse mouth wash everyday) because I already brush my daughter's teeth about 3x a day and we floss everyday.

Thanks again for all the responses!!

My son (5 yrs. old)had the bad odor in his mouth but not the other symptoms you mentioned. He goes to the dentist every six months and I asked about his bad odor. She said if he brushes right and floss then the bad breath is coming from his digestive system and to talk to his pediatrician about it. This symptom has gone away with proper brushing, flossing and mouth wash. It might not be the same as your situation but a bit similar. I was also concerned about his breath :)

Ask her pediatrician to test for diabetes. If it is juvenille (type I) diabetes you'll want to find out quick before she gets too sick. I was diagnosed with juvenille diabetes when I was 16. I slowly started to be thirsty all the time and had to pee a lot. Cloudy urine could mean that there are keytones in her urine. Also, the bad mouth odor comes if your blood sugar is too high. I don't know if you know much about diabetes, but in case you don't, type I comes on suddenly - the pancreas (spelling?) just stops working, not producing any insulin. They don't know exactly what causes it - it's an autoimune disease. But the way you find out is when all of a sudden, the blood sugar is high because the pancreas is not functioning and then you are thirsty all the time and have to pee a lot, have bad odor in the mouth... When I was 16, I was hungry, thirsty, and tired for about a month. I also lost a bunch of weight - with high blood sugars, your body isn't breaking down the food you eat. I hope your daughter is okay - maybe she just has a bladder infection and needs a trip to the dentist. I didn't want to scare you but those are two symptoms that would make me think to have her checked for diabetes - they can check her blood sugar really quickly and let you know. If it is diabetes, it can be treated and she can live a normal healthy life. The only other thing that I think the mouth odor could be is a sinus infection. My son had a sinus infection, poor guy, at 18 months and he had a very foul smell around his face. Hope this helps!!

Tho cloudy urine and bad mouth oder could be signs of an infection. Usually cloudy urine means a blatter infection or UTI. The bad breath could be a sinus infection. The dry patchy skin could be a lot of things. She could have eczema, that is very common. Both of my boys have it. There are alot of things that could be efecting that. I would definitly give her plenty of clear fluids for the infection and get her in to see the pediatrician as as you can. It is not an emergency, but I know sinus infections and/or blatter infections can be painful and miserable.

My daughters both had the same symptoms and they had bladder infections that led to kidney infections, we later found out they both had a genetic disorder causing the kidney infections, but if we would have caught them at bladder infections, they would not have kidney damage. Have a urine culture done, it cant hurt anything, but it could offer a piece of mind, with a bladder infection they dont run fevers, not until it gets into the kidney!

How much is she drinking? When my kids get dehydrated they get cloudy urine and it also makes their tongues kind of white and makes their breath bad.

I suggest more fluids for the cloudy urine - if that isn't the cause, I'd be heading to the doctor.
The skin may be eczema. Both my girls have it. Dry, red, scaly areas that start as just a bumpy feeling patch that looks almost like it is under the skin, then moves out if you don't keep them super moisturized. Find the best moisturizer you can and keep her covered in it. Bath oil is a great help too. But if you are at the doctor, ask him about it too, they do have medicines for it.

The other Mom's have given several good possible reasons for your daughter's symtpoms. Another possibility is that the bad breath could be a sinus infection and the cloudy urine could be a urinary tract infection. I would push fluids and see if the cloudy urine doesn't clear up and if she has yellow/ green mucous and is feeling not herself, I would have her checked for a sinus infection.

Another possibility, with the dry skin, could be that she has some food allergies.

All in all, I would encourage a trip to the Doctor to rule out some of these conditions...especially the diabetes.

Good luck!

I'm not sure about the urine or breath, but as for the dry spots, both of my children had eczema since they were babies. I have used a product called Renew lotion and changed my house to chemically free. That has taken away the dry skin, and is tons cheaper than the stuff the doctor tried to tell me to get.

I've not seen this before, but hv heard that bad breath in a little kid is a sign of imbalance. Surely cloudy urine is also something notable, yet not alarming. I recommend seeing a homeopathic Dr. to address alll of these concerns, as a homeopath can find one remedy to work to correct the imbalance of all these things. My son (3) has had eczema since 1 month of age, plus peanut/tree nut allergies. All are controlled by a single remedy and it wonderfully has no side effects (like the steroid creams they wanted me to put on his skin).
Our homeopathic Dr is Dr. Josephine Polich (www.dupagehomeopathic.com) in Naperville. She's giving a free seminar on homeopathy on 3/15. The info is below. HTH. I'd be happy to email w/ you offline if you'd like.

Sounds like she's not getting enough fluids. My three year old would only drink about 4 oz of fluids a day if I let her. I have to insist she drink 4 oz of milk with breakfast, 4 oz of juice at lunch and dinner and then I put a sippy cup with water in the bed with her. She typically wakes up and drinks all of that before morning. So that is the only way I can get her properly hydrated.

It could also be what she is drinking. I know my sister-in-law had to stop buying Juicy Juice because her daughter got the worst smelling breath from it.

The two might not be related either. Does she brush her teeth? I have my girls brush their teeth and then I finish them up twice a day.

Both of mine are mouth breathers at night and they wake up with pretty stinky breath, so I have to have them brush their teeth with me in the morning.

When the body is unbalanced, it expresses it in different ways. Traditional doctors are not trained to treat these types of symptoms and know only how to suppress the symptoms with drugs. I would suggest seeking help from an alternative/complementary medicine doctor who will balance the body and boost the immune system (rather than suppress the symptoms). Check out a homeopath, naturopath, or chinese medicine. I highly recommend the DuPage Homeopathic Center (Naperville, IL) and Inner Harmony Accupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Naperville and Aurora, IL). Both of these have websites, I can send you the links or contact info if you are interested.

I suggest you look at the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes at http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=103498

My son was diagnosed at 21 months old with the disease. His pediatrician did not want to believe he had it. It can be overlooked at this age because many people don't realize children this young develop the disease. And, as the other response said, the disease comes on sudden.

Good luck to you and your family.
