I had an missed miscarriage and I chose the medicine instead of a D&C. I passed the pregnancy 3 weeks and 3 days ago, and I am still bleeding! Has anyone had any experience with this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your stories and advise. I am still bleeding (4 weeks!) I still have some pregnancy hormones showing in blood tests. Dr says it can be normal to bleed this long. Will do some more tests next week. UGG! Please continue to let me know if you have been through this too. Thank you Mamas!

I've had a couple miscarriages, and with both I bled for 6 weeks. One was D&E (like D&C) and one was spontaneous, with no meds. But if you are losing a lot of blood, more than one pad an hour, please call your doctor!

Hi Sunshine,
I'm really sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Common or not, it's awful.
I had nonviable pregnancy that stopped developing at 6 weeks and was prescribed misoprostol by my OB. We discussed the possibility of heavy bleeding and infection. It's a risk, but this is generally a very effective and safe medication (albeit controversial).
One of the potential risks of misoprostol is an incomplete miscarriage-- not all the tissue is passed. This might explain your bleeding, though 3 weeks doesn't seem like a really long time. If you're at all in doubt, if the bleeding isn't tapering off, go see your Doc and get a scan. Better to be done sooner.
by the way, I never took the meds. Ended up with a spontaneous incomplete miscarriage and d&c.
A total drag- my sympathy to you.

HI, I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage at about 7 weeks, took the same meds, and I did bleed for about that many weeks, I believe. And I've heard lots of variation on low long people bleed. Again, sorry for your loss and I hope you are doing OK.

You're probably fine. I am (unfortunately) a veteran at this.
I've miscarried 4 times - each time was different - but I bled for at least 8 days up to 6 weeks. Yes, 6 weeks - so get the jumbo box of pads from Costco. It seems like adding insult to injury. I took the medicine this time and it definitely jump started the process.
You should call your OBGYN and ask for a scan if you're worried - especially if you get a fever!
Drink lots of raspberry leaf tea to help your body clean house.
I know how much it sucks, sorry.

I used it because I had a m/c in October, and didn't want a huge outpatient surgical bill at the end of the year (my deductible was 3000 and started up again on Jan 1.)

I had a good experience with Misoprostol, I took it the night it was prescribed, started having mild cramping and light bleeding (I put my kid's cloth diaper on), went to bed, felt the urge to push around 2 AM, and passed my teeny tiny at home, all I recognized was the gestational sac, very tiny. I was glad, because I got to sort of say goodbye and bury it.

My embryo died at 6 weeks and I took misoprostal around week 11 to pass it after 2 ultrasounds showed it was still not budging on its own. The bizarre thing was how cranky I was the entire time I knew I was pregnant (I found out around week 7) and my mood lifted once I had buried everything. I don't know that I would have had so much closure had I gone through with the D&C, and I think carrying around a dead pregnancy messed with my hormones. I know my blood sugar was completely out of control and I was very sick like with morning sickness, which I did not have with my healthy pregnancy that I carried to term.

I remember bleeding heavily for 4 days and tapering off. Not much blood, more like lochia around when it quits. I don't recall bleeding for 6 weeks, but it felt like that since I got a period soon after. I did not see my doctor afterward, he told me to come in if I got a fever or was bleeding too much. Since I bleed a lot anyway, it wasn't too bad, and was managed by diaper the first night and big pads until it stopped.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and I am sending you gentle healing thoughts. I also suggest that if it doesn't taper off soon, see the doctor. You may have some tissue that did not evacuate.

Take care,

A.

Hi Sunshine,

I am so sorry about your baby. I had a miscarriage but ended up having to have a D&C. I have heard that it is very common to bleed for several weeks after. I did for about 6weeks. I think its more common though for about a month. I just had other complications related to the D&C which explained my prolonged bleeding. Hang in there-- I know it is extremely tough emotionally and physically to go through it. I would call your OBGYN just to be on the safe side and ask them if you should be seen. Take good care of yourself.

Hi Sunshine,

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I chose the medicine too in the same situation b/c I didn't have insurance.

I really wish I would have chosen the d&c b/c my misoprostal experience landed me in an ambulance and to the ER. My bleeding NEVER stopped and I almost bled to death. I passed a clot the size of a softball. My husband found me passed out and not breathing! I had to go to the ER and have a d&c anyway; total bill, $15,000!!!

Please go to a doctor as soon as you can. It is a dangerous medication that might be fine for some people but not for everyone. It was never researched for use in the OB field and there are a lot of cases of women having a similar experience as me and many law suits have been filed. A doctor is supposed to have your written consent before giving it to you! I never knew any of this until I had this terrible life threatening case.

It happend to me a year ago in June. Almost exactly a year later, on July 3rd of this year, I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl, so it does not effect fertitlity, but for the short term, it could be very dangerous.

My family doctor was horrified to find that it had been prescribed to me and said if she had known she would have warned me not to take it in the first place.

You are probably ok since it has been 3 weeks, but if you are feeling dizzy and light-headed, get to a doctor right away.

Good luck, I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. This happened to me as well. I just wanted the miscarriage to be overwith quickly and at home, so I took the meds. The miscarriage itself was not bad, it was the aftermath that went on and on. It took almost 4 weeks (actually, that is the same length of time it took to stop bleeding after my kids were born, both times). It sucks but unless you are bleeding a lot, it is probably normal. I went back for an additional ultrasound about 2 weeks after I took the medication, as I recall - hopefully they have had you come in for that to make sure all is well. That will help set your mind at ease.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you get to feeling well again soon.
