Can I color my hair (not just highlight but full hair coloring) while I am breastfeeding? I called my Dr's office and they said it's okay and that it's only a no-no while one is pregnant, I just wanted your opinion anyway. My son is still breastfeeding, he's 11 months now and I have so much gray as I have not colored my hair for almost two years now (since I found out I was pregnant). Your opinions are so much appreciated !!! Thanks.

What can I do next?

it's ok to color or just highlight anytime, from what my doct's say. It's bad in excess and it's better to have foils or a cap and not have the chemicals right on your scalp. The experts aren't sure of how much is absorbed through the skin and then into the blood stream (thus why 'they' say to stay away from it while preggo) go give yourself a boost, we all need a little primping from time to time!

Do what feels right to you - I stopped only during the first trimester, then colored through the rest of my pregnancy and through a year of breastfeeding. My daughter is happy and healthy and that's ok for me:)

Good luck!

Yup! Totally fine! Most of the stuff on the market today is pretty safe to use during pregnancy too.

If you're really concerned about it, you can go to your local health food store & get an all-natural hair colorant.--Those are always the safest (and most eco-friendly too).

Have fun & good for you for still nursing!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I was told it was ok to put color in but not to bleach it out. The bleaching process can create toxic compounds and free radicals that can enter your breastmilk. So as long as you're going darker, you're probably alright.

Personally I would not. When the hair color touches your scalp it gets absorbed into your bloodstream and excreted in your breast milk. I don't feel it is worth the risk.

Wash that gray right out of your hair TODAY!! Why wait or look older any longer than you have to??? I know they say not to color your hair when you are pregnant, I asked my Dr. when I was pregnant...and he told me that it was a personal decision that there were no positive links between coloring your hair and any pregnancy problems espically with the types of hair color they have out now. (Okay I admit that was about 16yrs ago but hair coloring technologies have only improved since then.) Have a great day and have some fun with your hair!! Best wishes.

It should be fine. Just keep in mind, pregnancy can change the condition of your hair. I colored my hair 6mths. after my son was born and it just would NOT take. 11 mths. however should be good. Don't worry about it, the small amount of "nasties" that get into your body will be filtered by your natural systems.

It's ok to dye your hair when you're pregnant so I assume it's perfectly fine to dye it when you're breastfeeding.

I colored my hair in the second trimester while i was pregnant.my son came out perfect. there is no link that while pregnant or while breastfeeding that the chemicals from the hair dye go into your blood stream or can go into your breast milk. if you have issues with the color coming out different than expected like you can while pregnant be aware it can be related to hormones. talk to your hair dresser if you have one that you like. if you need a good one let me know. make sure your hair is healthy and your are not losing your hair before you do color it. I know that a woman that is important to make ourselves look good even if we are mom's. good luck

If I were going to nurse just one more month, and I was having doubts, I would wait. But if I was going to nurse for a lot longer, and my doctor and everyone else said it was fine and there are no proven studies that state otherwise, GO FOR IT!!!

Maria,
This is controversial for some reason. In all the books I read during my pregnancy, the Dr's I spoke with (including my brother) and friends who are Moms, as well as the internet... it is completely safe to color or high light your hair. There is no proof or study that shows anything different. The only thing I would personally suggest is 1. If you don't feel comfortable then don't do it. 2. Wait until after the 1st trimester is over. In your case I wouls say absolutley and go ahead. If it makes you feel more beautiful and the fumes will not carry through the house to your child then go for it.

Hello,

I hope this will help to ease your mind a bit. I was a full time colorist when I was pregnant with my oldest son. As you can imagine I breathed ALOT of chemicals and rarely wore gloves when coloring hair. My son is PERFECT (as much as can be at 6 LOL) so I would say you would have to actually ingest the color to have it have any effect on the child. I have always thought that while being careful about this is smart just remember all the women over all the years of haircoloring who have worked through it and had perfect babies.

I hope this perspective helps.

Hello,

My OB said it was perfectly fine to color or highlight your hair while you were/are pregnant they just recommended that you wait 3 months until you are past the first trimester. But there is no proven facts either way.
