Hair Loss!

I had a delightful baby four and a half months ago and my hair will not stop falling out. I'm not worried about getting a bald spot (that seems unlikely) but it is making a mess and driving me nuts. Does anyone know of a shampoo or medication to stop the loss?

What can I do next?

Hi D.,

I think it has something to do with your diet. When I was pregnant with my second baby my skin was so horribly dark and dry looking. I knew it was because of the baby, he was depleting me of one the supplement which supports healthy skin. Maybe that's what's going on with you, the baby has depleted you of that supplement which helps your hair growth and health.

I suggest you get some vitamin supplements that help with the growth in hair and nails. Also, how are your nails doing...if they are also not healthy than that confirms my notion. I'm not a doctor but I am 42 and have experienced a lot. You can find healthy supplements and great customer support at Whole Foods, GNC or Trader Joes.

PS. Pink is the new cool for all genders. :)

good luck.

A quote from my Melaleuca Wellness guide says, "After giving birth, some women will lose up to one-third of their head hair but will quickly grow it back within a year if properly nourished." So make sure you eat right and don't get too stressed. We have 'Naturals Melaleuca Oil Shampoo' to maintain healthy hair and scalp. We also have natural dietary supplements All our products are natural and safe. If you would like to know more, call or email me. ###-###-#### or ____@____.com

Hi D.! I have a 20 month old and a newborn, both girls and the same thing happened to me when my first daughter was 3 months. I had beautiful long red hair that was super thick and down my back. I ended up cutting 13 inches off and donating it to Locks of Love. That really helped with the hair loss. I think its due to nursing and hormones. Most women experience this. With having a 2 month old I'm expecting that I'll need another haircut in about a month when the same thing happens all over again!!!!

I lost a lot of hair myself. My hairdresser recommended a vitamin you can get at a GNC type store called Hair factor. She said she couldn't get her hair to grow past her sholders. After taking hair factor for three months she now has really long thick hair. She continues to take it as a daily vitamin. I did not take it because I couldn't affair it and I am not very good at remembering to take vitamins. Protein is also very important. Hang in there. It gets better. I cut my hair to a sholder length style with a longer bangs. It made me feel better.

Oh the hair loss- so many of us go through this. Now repeat to yourself: THIS IS NORMAL AND IT WILL PASS. If you are nursing, it may last beyond several months. Mine lasted about 5. But before you know it, you'll have your normal thickness of hair back. You should consult your Dr. though if it lasts more than 6 months.

The hair loss is normal, unfortunately. Are you still taking a really good prenatal vitamin? That will help stem the tide of strands for awhile. It's part of your body changing from a baby growing machine, into a mommy. It does stop and it is definitely annoying. Hang in there.

Dear D.:

So you have a boy that will have no issues about being in touch with his feminine side, and you are losing hair!

Hairloss is most always hormonal. Call your doctor for a referral and look on the internet. PLEASE do not let the internet stuff frighten you...call your doctor.

Try taking 1-3 Tablespoons of Bragg's apple Cider Vinegar a day. You can mix it in tomato juice and sip it throughout the day. Not only will your hair stop falling out but your nails will get stronger too.

why does it work? Because it corrects your acid/alkaline balance.

If you can find a shampoo with real Biotin in it, it should help too.

There's nothing wrong with you, this in normal! During pregnancy you get to have lucious thick hair but you lose all that new hair post-pardum. As I understand it, your not losing your hair, just the new hair you grew during pregnancy. This has happened with both my pregnancies & I don't have any bald spots - just the same hair I started out with. It will eventually stop - hang in there!

Arbonne does have a product that works for hair loss called "Thermal Fusion Hair & Scalp Revitalizer". I do sell it & have samples if you like BUT, I really don't think you NEED it.

Enjoy that baby boy! I've got 2 of them myself!

After so many super contributions, all I can think to add is that scalp massage is really important for stimulating hair growth. When one's scalp gets rigid and tight it cuts off the blood supply to the hair follicles. If you take your finger tips and try to massage your scalp in small circles it is easy to check and see how loose or how rigid it is. If it is tight at all, it is worth making scalp massage a frequent habit. Motherhood and all its demands can cause a stress helmet of sorts to kind of settle in on one's scalp, especially if one hardens up in the face of new challenges instead of softening, accepting, and working forward with gentle faith. It is good to set a pace that honors those around us and ourselves too. I find my scalps' relaxedness is a good indication if that is in balance or not.

I vote for increasing your protein intake. And if you need Biotin, it would be more effective if you eat it. Add fish oil or flax oil too. If you are losing hair, it is almost always nutritional deficiency. You need nutrients to make hormones too, if you are wondering about the hormone connection.
Hair loss during/after pregnancy may be common but it cannot be normal, unless you are an animal who sheds her winter coat in the spring and summer.
Be sure you can digest the protein. You need chloride (from salt), B vitamins (try Brewers yeast) and zinc to make enough hydrochloric acid to digest your proteins and minerals. Hydrochloric acid tablets (actually betaine hydrochloride) are available. Use a low dose (@100 mg)or break them in half.
The Koreans traditionally eat seaweed soup and rice for the first month after delivery. The soup is meat or fish broth which provides very easily digested protein and the seaweed provides LOTS of trace minerals to replace what was used up making the baby. And the rice is easily digested calories. I think this is why you see so many Korean women with 2 or 3 kids who have figures like teenagers. (I am Caucasian)
