Good Musical/play for Grades 4-6 - Petaluma,CA

I have just agreed to co-direct our school's performing arts production in the fall, which features only grades 4 thru 6. W're talking about which play to do. We just did Lion King, Peter Pan, Wizard of Of, Alice in Wonderland, Oklahoma... we're talking about something really fun like Hairspray (I'm worried it's too dance heavy) or Bye Bye Birdie (may be hard to adapt for kids)... does anyone have any good suggestions of musicals they've seen for that age group?

What can I do next?

Annie? Fiddler on the roof? I wonder if 101 dalmations could be made into a play? i can't remember what the songs were but with all the puppies it would make lots of parts for the kids : )

I have been involved in two separate productions of Bye Bye Birdie. DON'T DO IT!!! That show is friggin cursed, I tell ya! Stay away!!!!!

And that is all I will say about that one.

As to suggestions, I assume you are looking for something full-length? MTIshows.com has several Disney titles cut down and arranged to be performable for that age range. You can't beat the name recognition to pack your auditions and your performances. (Also, they come with rehearsal and performance CDs.)

Another fun one is Don't Count Your Chickens Before They Cry Wolf. A fun mixture of different Aesops Fables and again, age appropriate.

The kids I nanny for just did honk and I totally agree it was really fun. The kids had a blast and so did the families who came to watch it. Check into that one.

For 4th/5th grade we did Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun and Snoopy the Musical. But my absolute favorite was a show called Honk! I had never heard of it before, but check it out, it's a REALLY fun musical, especially for that age :)

The Music Man - the songs would have to be altered for the lead her notes are pretty high but it can be done if someone knows what they are doing in the music department - unless you have a little star on your hands.

Cats could also be fun for the kids too.

Hi K.-

I am a fan of some of the 'oldies' but goodies...especially for younger kiddos. "Story Theatre" springs to mind...as do "The Boyfriend"..."Godspell"....and "Pippin".

Best Luck!
