Good Hand Lotion?

Updated on March 16, 2009

with a toddler and a 5 month old, I am constantly washing my hands, which are now a dry, scaly M.E.S.S. Can anyone recommend a good, cheap lotion that will work with using once a day (or will stay on with the hand washings)? Used to use Vaseline Intensive Care Hand Therapy, and that even hasn't done the trick as of late.
Thanks!

Try Aquaphor (not the baby version as it costs more for the same ingredients) and jojoba oil (the have a good one at Trader Joe's)

Here are some of my favorites:
1. Neutrogena Norwegian hand cream (unscented- I don't like that powdery smell on the scented one). Comes in a little tube and takes me months to use it up if I use it every day.
2. Udder cream- my mother in law loves this one.
3. Gardeners hand cream (Target)
4. Thyme hand lotions. They are not really cheap ($17-$20) but they last and they work. TO me, the Vaseline therapy (while I love it) is not as thick and I can feel it rinsing off, but the norwegian formula is $4-$6 and it stays through multiple washings.
I hope this helps!

I am fair skinned and have "elephant" skin... VERY dry cracky all the time... and I use "Neutrogena Hand Cream". It is a little pricey and ocmes in a smaller container... but so worth it I swear. Its in a white with blue and red container. I put this stuff on once in the morning and it lasts literaly all day... its amazing. And I hate "slimmy hands" after lotion... this stuff starts slimmy and drys smooth within minutes...Avon Silicon Glove works well too it just dones't smell that great, good luck!

You can use Bag Balm, it is sometimes in the pet section in a green can. It is really really goooey!! I put it on my hands at night when I am in the bed so not to touch anything, then in the morning my hands are so soft. You won't believe it. It's actually made for cows utters. Works good on the heals of your feet too. I know...weird but it works and its not too expensive, around $5.00.
Good Luck

Check products like Aveeno, Nutregena, and Burts Bees. Sorry, I can't remeber the exact names on these products, but I do have friends with some pretty bad hand issues (one friend is a massage therapist). Some of these I mentioned can be expensive, but you do get what you pay for with hand lotion it seems. The ingredient that seems to really be nice is Shea butter or lanolin. Also, you could try 'body butter' like at bath and body works. They have some pretty good sales there when they are clearing inventory...as much as 75 percent off. I use coupons and get to sales for these kinds of products all the time. Best of luck, K.

Hi S.,

I had the same problem. I had both dry hands and my lips were always chapped. I tried everything. I have finally found something that works great. I use Moisture Therapy Lotion from Avon. I use the hand cream which is thicker than normal lotion and it keeps my hands soft. I also use their lip moisturizer and am very pleased. I was so pleased by their products that I became an independent rep. We are having a special right now which includes 5 moisture therapy products - the body lotion, hand lotion, cream, and two lip moisturizers for $10.00. This is how I originally purchased them and I am hooked. If you are interested please visit my website www.youravon.com/aliciashrum. If you aren't local I'd be happy to find a free shipping coupon for you. I honestly did try everything else before I tried avon and I am now soft and satisfied.

Best of luck to you with you little one's.

Cerave CREAM stay away from lotions or anything in a "pump" (they are too thin to be helpful for hand dermatitis. If it gets real bad use a Hydrocortisone twice a day also) followed by Theraseal barrier you can find both at target...works wonders

I LOVE Cetaphil products that are available at any retail store (target, wal-mart, longs, rite-aid). They make a specific product for the hands with shea butter that is wonderful. It is like a cream, but not too greasy. My dermatologist recommended it for me. It also works great on elbows and feet!

I have you tried AVON? They have a GREAT one called Silicone Glove which usually runs about .99. They also have one called Moisture Therapy which runs from about .99-3.00. They both work very well. I'm always washing my hands also and these REALLY seem to work! Mary Kay also has a Enriched Moisturizer which is meant for your face but my hands were soooo dry and had try something. I put this on at night while I'm sleeping, it works wonders!

I have eczema and I just started using this new hand lotion called Renew Lotion which has made my eczema go away completely and keeps my hands moisturized all day with one application.

It is made by a wellness company called Melaleuca, which is an on-line wellness company.

Let me know if you want me to send you more information on it.

This is more like an ointment, but try Aquaphor Healing Ointment. It's for dry, cracked hands (and works on lips!) Try to apply whatever lotion you get right after you wash and dry your hands.

I'd suggest using a lotion soap if you don't want to apply lotion after each wash. Bath & Body sells antibacterial lotion soap in a lot of different scents. It works GREAT during the day & then at night, I use a cream - Body butter, Acquaphor, Lay it on Thick from Bath & Body. They're all too greasy to use during the day but are great at night.

If you use the lotion soap though, you should rub your hands & work it in BEFORE getting them wet. Otherwise, the soap globs up and ends up in your sink. Hard to put into words but if you try it, you'll see for yourself.

Hi! I can't say it's cheap, but Eucerin lotion works really well for me, & my hands get really dry (especially in the winter months). Also, the doctor told me one time to wash palms of the hands only (since that's what touches) because I wash my hands a lot, too. Good luck!

In the winter, with two small children and house chores, my hands get so bad they crack and bleed. What I found helps is to SLATHER lotion on my hands, then put my hands in socks to go to sleep at night. It intensifies the moisturizing effect. Learned this from a beautician. I do it throughout most of the winter months and it really works. I use a pretty good quality hand lotion but one you can still get reasonably priced at Walmart - Curel. The cheapy, heavily perfumed stuff (like Bath and Body Works) is for just that - smelling good and not healing. Good luck!

I like the Cetaphil lotion, it can be used even on babies since it doesn't have fragrences or extra stuff added to it. I have been constantly washing my hands with our little one in the NICU and now at home, trying to ward off the germs. It doesn't stay on after hand washing, but I only apply it morning and night and my hands are much better.

My 13 year old daughter has been having problems with her hands being dry and cracked (to the point where her knuckles were bleeding). What I had her do was put on a good hand lotion (Burt's Bees makes a good hand salve, as do several others...) and then put gloves on (they make some specifically for this purpose) at night when she goes to bed. Within two days they were noticeably improved. Good luck.

Hi S.,

the best lotion out there is Renew from Melaleuca. It beat Eurecin hands down in a blind side by side study. I tried Eurcin for me and my son,but it left us feeling greasy, evne though it claims to be non-greasy. My 2 yr even told m e "no mama" to Eurcin. He loves the Renew lotion. I have thrown all other lotions away bc it works so good! great for sensitive skin, safe for newborns and up.(alot of their stuff is!) You have to be a customer, but they have so many benefits, you save $$$, you get $100 in free products when you join, everything is RISK FREE, and the lotion is one of the free products your 1st month. We are green, have an awesome cleaning line that is effective but safe for our kids. They have just updated their website so you can learn more about them. check out www.melaleuca.com if you are interested in joining please let me know and I would be happy to assist you.

Dear S.,
My hands get terrible! I wash a lot and found that some dish detergents really just eat my skin off.
I have to agree that Avon has wonderful lotions! In fact, I should have asked my mom for some in my Christmas stocking.
I also use vaseline. It really does provide a barrier from soap and water.
You can put some on at night and put a nice cotton sock on each hand. It works great for dry feet too!

If you have a SportsClip (men's haircutting place) in your area, and I'm sure you do, they sell a really great tea tree lotion that I use on my hands every night before bed. It's nice and light and feels good w/out being greasy.

And this may not be your ideal because of the price, but check out the Lush website. I use their Dream Cream every morning (or the Karma Cream). It's by far the best lotion I've ever owned. All natural with only the tiniest amount of preservatives to keep in from spoiling. Really great products if you decide to splurge.

I sell Beauti Control. I am not saying this so you buy my products. You can also purchase from another consultant but Show of Hands from Beauti Control is wonderful. This is a hand scrub with oils. You leave it buy your sick and can use once a day or everytime you wash your hands. You do not need to use lotion afterwards. I had a friend who in the winter time his tips of his fingers would crack from being so dry. He used this product and the next winter his fingers did not crack once. You can also use this product on your body and feet. You can also save with it and no lotion afterwards. It is great. The price is about $27.50 so if you use a small amount on your hands each day it will lst awhile.

Hope that helps.
