hi there--I was going to say go to Play It Again Sports but Andria already did! Great place for new and used sporting goods-and when you're done with them you can trade them in at PIAS for other equipment or just get some $ back for them. If he really takes to golf you could trade the first set of clubs for some better ones as he needs them.

My kids love golf and have been going to the driving range since they were 2. Some ranges carry kids' clubs that you can use while practicing, so you wouldn't have to spend the money on your own set yet. Kids grow so fast at that age, you'll end up having to buy a bigger set in a couple years anyway.

Toy's R Us actually carries a pretty nice set - I ended up paying $39 (on sale w/coupon) for a set of 5 Dunlap Jr. clubs & bag, and my 3 kids have not destroyed them yet.

If you have any other questions about it or want some golf buddies for your son, feel free to contact me privately. We're always looking for a good excuse to go golfing. :>)

That would be a great idea as long as they would not become weapons to use on the other kids.... If you can aford them it would greatly inspire him. Have you checked to see if there are any kids training camps for golf? My girls went to one back in Missouri when they were little and they had a blast and they did not even like golf.

Hi H.,

I like all those ideas, especially Andria's. I think getting kids started earlier with sports and exercise is crucial to life long health and exposure to a wide variety of activities is important to helping them discovery their own talents and interests. I'm particularly fond of introducing the kids to physical activities that they can play for a lifetime such as swimming, golf, tennis, biking, hiking, etc.

And along those lines, anyone know of golf lessons available for young children in the Clermont (Four Corners) area?

Hi H.,
As a mom, I know how excited we can get when the kids want to try new things. After going through this with my boys years ago, the one lesson I learned was to allow them to "experience" with minimal cost. Check into the golf lessons at a few of the clubs in the area. Many offer the lessons with their equipment. After he completes the first round of lessons, if he still seems interested, go to "play it again sports" and by used child sized clubs. They will be much cheaper, and if he then loses interest, you can take them back to the store, they will buy them back, or trade for his newest "interest"! We did this with our boys through, T-ball, tennis, etc., until they finally decided upon wresting and football! It is a great money saver!

If you're already working 2 jobs and plus you have 4 children, it seems you must be tight financially. I would think that it would be unrealistic to buy your 5 year old a set of golf clubs. Could you afford the same amount for each child? I don't think that it is practical, fair or wise to do. There are so many cheaper versions in toys today, perhaps you can find something more suitable for his age to keep his interest for now.

If there is a play it again sports in the area that is a great place to get used clubs and have them fit for your son. In the summer at most country clubs they offer a golf camp for free for youth. Our son has golfed since he was three. I too was a single mom. You can do it and I believe you are doing a great job! Start calling the golf courses to see what they have to offer. It is a very rewarding sport. God is no respector of persons, what He did for me He will do for you and that is sending you your Knight in Shining Armor that will love your children more than you do and will have great pleasure in rearing your four children. Believe it happened for me when I least expected it and has been great for the last twelve years. Blessings to you and your family.

Hi, if you can afford the golf clubs why not buy them for him and encourage him to play. Most execs make their decisions playing golf. :)

My daughter started playing golf w/her daddy when she was 5 and loves it. We found an inexpensive set of clubs for around $99.00 and they're kid clubs so they fit her perfectly. I wouldn't recommend getting expensive clubs until you see if your 5 year old is going to stick with it.
