My son has expressed an interest in playing tennis - but I live way out in the middle of nowhere (My thingie says Kingwood, but I am actually in the Sam Houston national forest) I am having trouble finding even a public tennis court, let alone someone to teach him. We knock a ball back and forth on the driveway, but I am no pro, and he has never expressed an interest in ANY sport in his life, so I am trying to foster it!
Anyway, ramble ramble, there is a country club in an exclusive sub division about 30 mins from me, and they have a raquet club - but how much do these things cost, do you have to live in the sub division to be in a country club?
does anyone who lives semi close to me know of a tennis instructor, or even just a public court?
YOu can pay extra if you are a nonmember and take lessons. It is much cheaper than a membership. Some require you to spend x dollars per month or pay anyway. Call around and ask if there is a TRIAL membership. I got three visits free once though they deny they do this.
The country club has a strict dress code and I would not want to put out the $$ until I was.
Does the local high school have courts? If they have a team you may even be able to hire one of the players to "coach" your son!
You can call the country club and inquire directly re their rules and costs. We belong to a private club and I can tell you it is VERY expensive. We joined mainly so my husband could play golf close to home, but they also have nice swim and tennis programs for the kids.

We belonged to a country club one summer. It was insanely expensive. They waived the initiation fee that was $5,000 because they were having a huge membership drive. I think it would have been $10,000 for a golf membership. We were only social members, not golf members, and it was still about $200 a month (we just used the pool and went to social functions; I think we could use the tennis courts, too). It was much more expensive for a golf membership. I got pregnant at the end of the summer, and we dropped our membership to save money.
I agree with the others, check around wherever you can. My youngest is a golfer, but I don't want to pay the money for the country club. Instead we have him in various golf camps and golf lessons at another local golf course. It's still pricey, but not nearly at expensive as the country club. Good luck! Being out in the middle of nowhere (i.e: not a major metro area) can be a benefit for club memberships. Some have a "swim only" or "tennis only" membership which is cheaper than the whole deal.
Tennis lessons are good but take a little time and do a little research. Foster his interest in tennis, you are correct!!!
Tennis is a great sport that he can do for nearly his whole life and a great way to meet people. Google tennis lesson in your area on the web and get more info so that you can negotiate better.
Whenever our kids wanted to do something new, we asked for a complete session commitment--just to be sure. Want to play basketball? OK, you are in the whole season! Want swim team? OK---you are in from start until Championships.

my son also recently became very interested in tennis. I didn't know where to go either, and I have no idea how to play. I contacted our local high school, they put me in touch with their tennis coach. She is giving him lessons at the high school . The courts are open to the public when the school isn't using them . Our son is only 6 years old, but so far this is working out great. Good luck finding him a place to play.
It all depends on the country club. Some are open to anyone who wants to join, some are location dependent. Initiation fees can range from $0 to $40,000 and monthly dues are all over the map. Your best bet is to call the club and see. They may even have tennis lessons for non members.
the ymca might be a better option.
I don't have an idea on the country club, but here are some other places to check. The park & rec departments in your area for summer tennis programs for kids. Also check with the YMCA. Google your local parks. They should list what type of facilities they have and if they have public tennis courts. Or Google "public tennis courts".
instead of joining a country club - look up tennis pros who do private lessons or even ask the local high school if they have "tutors" for tennis...
our country club a now no-joiner fee - when we first moved here - they wanted $30K and $500 in food fees per month...no there is no initiation fee and lower food minimums....we can also walk to it - as we live on the golf course.....you might be able to call them to find out if they have any pros that can offer lessons - some might do it even if you aren't a member!

Does your local high school have courts? The high school coach might also be able to refer you to a local coach as well.
