Glider/ottoman Recommendations

I'm due in mid-October and I've been driving myself crazy with trying to find the right glider/ottoman set. I can't afford Dutailer, so let's not even go there. LOL I'm looking for something that will cost me in the $200-$400 range for both pieces. I've read such mixed reviews (mostly about Shermag ~ some say they're great and others say they start to fall apart after a few month) that I'm scared of making the wrong purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :o)

I looked and looked at gliders but ended up with a rocking recliner, it was 250 I think from BJ's or Costco. Its SUPER comfy, has held up great and is perfect in the living room. Might be worth a thought.

Good luck, S.

I've seen nice Dutailier gliders on craigslist for around 2-300. But I don't know of other brands that are great. Happy Shopping

I don't have a brand to recommend, but I would caution you against any model with bare wood on the arms. The best bet is really going someplace and trying them out to find what fits you best. Don't forget to have the Daddy test drive, too.

Next time around, i'm opting for a recliner.... as in Lazy-Boy.. or something similar - whatever i can find that is affordable. You can find some good deals at yard sales too! Those baby rockers/gliders/etc. to me were worthless. No amount of padding, pillows, cushions helped. And eventually my teeny infant grew and long before he was a year old was too big for us to sit comfortably and rock in it. My mom has a Lazy-Boy and I would go there just to use it.. COMFORT, CUSHIONED, RECLINING, PERFECT.

BTW, I found my glider/ottoman at a yard sale - pretty darn new - for $30.
Don't blow your money on a $200 one at the store if you still plan on getting one. I'm sure you know, but you can find some new/like new baby stuff at yard sales this time of year .. and better..you can bargain!!

My husband bought me a Shermag from Babies R Us over 7 years ago when my first was born and I still have it, use it and love it.

Hi J.,
I have a beautiful Dutailer brand glider and ottoman that I proabably need to let go of since my youngest will be 5 in December. I am not that sentimental to things usually but the glider didn't make it into our summer yard sale:) I would be willing to sell it knowing it's going to a loving home. It is tone on tone cream colored. It's very cushy with padded arm rests and more importantly no squeaks! It has held up so well through 3 kids but still looks and feels new. The cheaper brands definiately don't hold up over time as I have seen at yard sales and consignmet shops. If you would like to see it or ask about more details email me and I can give you my number so we can talk.

I'll just add that I bought a Shermag that was used through the Pennysaver and I've been very happy with it. They had it for several years and I've had it about a year and a half and so far it's still great. You may want to try used (consignment shops, Craigslist, Pennysaver, etc.) to find something of good quality for a lot less.

Other than that, I think you've gotten some good advice already. Good luck finding what's just right for you!

J.,
I bought a Shermag before my daughter was born and it worked great for the 1st year and then it developed a terrible squeak that we couldn't fix. Seriously, we tried everything and couldn't get rid of the squeak so we ended up trashing it and buying a Dutailier. Made me wish I had just bought the Dutailier in the beginning and not wasted the $ on the Shermag.

Both of my kids, now 3 1/2 and 1 1/2, have big, overstuffed rocker recliners in their rooms. They're great because they were VERY comfortable for nursing and now they're great because we sit in them and read books together. My sister has the "standard" new mommy glider and ottoman pair and says she wishes she had done the same. We got both of our chairs at "The Dump" on the northside for close to $300 each....

Hi J.,

I know you have gotten a lot of responses and I have three points to emphasize:

1. Be sure to get padded arm rests - otherwise your elbows (and sometimes your baby's head!) will be resting on bare wood which is uncomfortable.

2. I used a nursing stool instead of buying an ottoman - much less expensive and far more comfortable!!! I find that just raising your feet off the floor a little bit is more comfortable on your lower back than the ottoman. Really - this makes a big difference - you can try it out at the store (Babies R US or Baby Depot.)

Here is a link to a picture of the Medela nursing foot stool (read the reviews!):
www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2403243#showR...

3. When I bought mine it needed to be "aired out" for a while to let the foam smell go away - mine took about a month before I wasn't bothered by the smell when I sat in it.

I hope this helps! I love my glider (and foot stool) I still use it every day. It has been so relaxing for me and my babies - I am so glad I got it 6 years ago!

Just to throw something different in the mix, I HIGHLY recommend a recliner. I used a glider with my 1st. Don't remember the brand - something from Babies R Us. My experience was the glider was no good for dozing/sleeping through those middle of the night feedings. Maybe other gliders are better for that than the one I had. So for my 2nd I got a rocking recliner and was SO MUCH HAPPIER! Turned out to be a great move too, b/c I had to hold her all night for the first 2 months until we figured out she had acid reflux and got her on medication.

Perhaps a LazyBoy would work. I purchased one when my son was born, 8 years ago, and still enjoy it. Considering the money and comfort factor, I didn't see a glider lasting more than a few years.

Congratulations!

I have a Shermag and it works fine. I have no complaints. It is easy to assemble as well. My son is 4 mos. old. It is great for breastfeeding and bottle-feeding. Make sure that you get a boppy to accompany w/ the glider. There is a really great price at Burlington, approx. $199, and you can put in on layaway for about 4 mos.

This makes me giggle. I sweated this decision too. however I went with a 149.00 rocker/glider from Target. It has been in use now for 2 1/2 years and I love it! it gets to sqeakin sometimes...then I spray pledge on the joints and keep on rockin...
SAVE your money for a college fund? CD? or Diapers!
good luck!

J.,
I didn't want to go broke over a glider/ottoman either. Honestly, I got mine at walmart.com! It is less then $200 for the glider and ottoman. I've had it for over a year (my son will be 1 next week) and it is still in great shape and comfortable...definitely worth the price. And the cover can be wiped clean! It is by Storkcraft. I got mine delivered to the house and my husband assmebled it (in a short amount of time). Here is the link http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6006.... Ours is a different color, but this is the glider/ottoman set.
Good Luck.

I'm not sure what area you live in but my glider and footstool was a gift from my mother in law. She got it from Burlington for $150.00. When I got it I was disappointed because I had the same concerns, thinking you get what you pay for and that it probably wouldn't last. Well to my surprise, it has been GREAT! I have had it for over 4 years now and it has little to no signs of wear and tear. It held up much better than I imagined. The one I have is white wood with baby blue cushions, however, I know that had a few options to choose from. Good luck!

Hi J., If you are in the Rockville, Maryland area, I have a Dutailier glider rocker/ottoman set for sale. It's light wood, medium blue fabric. Recliner, multiposition and locking (so the kids can't get their fingers pinched). Padded armrests with pockets on the side. It comes with a matching, nursing ottoman (nursing footrest pulls out and retracts when you are done). Email me at ____@____.com. I'll sell it to you for less than what you are looking to spend on both items. :)

Hey J.,
My name is J. too:) Anyway, you can still afford a Dutalier glider/ottoman set. I would tell you to go online to get one. Many people sell them on Ebay or on Craig's List. I got mine from Craig's List from a desperate seller who needed to move. He sold mine to me for $40.00 and I had to come and haul it away. So check out the online options. I would also see if you could go into the babies r us store with the $ in cash and see if they will make a deal for you.

Good Luck:)

I have four glider/ottoman sets in my house. Three of them are Shermags and one I'm not sure what it is. Two I got at Baby Depot in Burlington Coat Factory and two I got at consignment stores. Of the three Shermags, two are in fantastic shape and one is a bit rickety. The two that are in really good shape both have upholstered arms and are a bit heavier. The slightly rickety one I bought over ten years ago for my first apartment and it was the cheapest one out there. I recommend going and trying them out in the store to see which ones are most comfortable for you (both physically and budget-wise) and then making your decision. My husband is a foot taller than me so we had to be sure we would both find the same chair comfortable when we were purchasing the one for the nursery. Hope this was somewhat helpful. Good luck!

Have you considered finding a nice rocking chair, even at an unpainted furiture store. Put a cushion on it, and get a nursing stool. It will be a nicer piece of furniture for the future.

I did all the research too, and was going to pay a pretty penny to get the perfect glider. But in the end, settled for a really comfy Lazy-Boy like chair (with the pop up thing for your feet). It was just perfect for nursing (it rocked), and now that our son is two, is great for reading in. It's also an actual nice piece of furniture which we can use for the next decade (will look great in an office or family room and anyone can use), not the typical baby glider which may be obselete in the next year. Good luck!
