Giving Medicine

Has anyone tried any different ways of giving mucinex granule packets to their kids and had success? My 4 year old will take it if I bribe her with a gummy worm. I'm wondering if anyone has tried lacing jello or just putting it in a drink?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions. The bribery with gummy worms worked well for us. My husband tested a packet himself and said if she were to bite into it, it would taste very bad.
Thanks to the ladies who reminded us about the recent FDA decisions concerning the safety of children taking cold medicines. I considered this and decided to use mucinex with guaifenesin only. Guaifenesin is one of the safest cold remedies. No decongestants to speed up the heart rate and no antihistimines to inhibit the immune response. No multi acting concocotions with acetemetaphine or ibuprophen (although we did give her these seperately when her fever was over 102). It may be that guaifenesin doesn't do much for most children under 6 (there is dosage for ages 2-6, by the way), but I feel that it helped shorten the duration of her illness.

I give my son granule packets of Cinguair in applesauce. But he is one year old and he LOVES applesauce. Don't know if that will help with a 4 year old!

Applesauce!! Only way my 2 year old will eat it, but boy does she gobble it up. Mucinex granules work better than anything else we've tried as far as snot and coughing goes. You can't really put it in a drink cuz the white granules don't disolve and get stuck in the sippy spout. Just a couple teaspoons of applesauce and we are home-free! I think yogurt worked also, but yogurt may not be ideal for a sick toddler. Good Luck!

try giving it in a few spoonfuls of applesauce. dont use too much or she may not eat it all and not get the right dose of medicine. Hope that helps :O)

Have you tried the children's liquid? They sell a 12-hour Mucinex formula for children age 2 up. I believe it's 1/2 tsp. every twelve hours. My daughter (who's 4) likes it well enough.

My kids can't stand the liquid mucinex. There are two flavors of the granule packets-the honey-something?? flavor they don't like, but I've mixed it in a milkshake before. There's another flavor-grape, I think, that they seem to like much more. I bet you could mix it in pudding or jello and it would slide right down:)) good luck!

I was under the impression that cough syrup wasn't to be given to kids under the age of 6. Not the children's. The ONLY stuff I give my 5 and 3 yr old is Triaminic where it actually says 2 to 6 and then the dose. My doctor told me that if the meds say "under 6, ask doctor" they shouldn't get it.

Be careful giving cold medicine or other medicine to your kids especially under the age of 6. There have been many FDA reports out there warning parents and others of this but the companies that make it have agreed to just put not good to give under the age of 2 even though the FDA says it really shouldn't be given to children under 6 years

I tried putting it in applesauce for my son. The first time I tried that, he was watching me and I put a pretty large ratio of mucinex to applesauce and he hated it. The next time I mixed the packet in one of those individual serving cups of applesauce and he wasn't watching, of course there was a different reaction. He still knew something was quite right, but he choked it down anyway!

Good luck,
K.
