Hi Moms-

I am due in a week or 2 with my 2nd son. Our first son just turned 4. He is very excited about being a big brother but of course, we anticipate some jealousy issues b/c he has had mommy and daddy all to himself for 4 years now. He has 2 small stuffed animals that are his BEST friends. We have assured him that those are his special friends and we would never ask him to share them. He would like to buy his new baby brother his own special friend. So we will be going to the store to do just that. However, when he comes to the hospital for the first time to meet his new baby brother, I would like his baby brother to have something to give his big brother. Aside from the stuffed animal we are allowing him to pick out for the baby, we need another stuffed animal like we need a hole in the head. So definitely want something different. Any suggestions for a good big brother gift from the baby? Thanks Moms:)

I went out and bought a toy my son had been begging for, wrapped it up and took it to the hospital with me when I had my daughter. He was so excited and couldn't believe that his baby sister knew he wanted this particular toy. I had her 9 months ago and he still talks about the day he saw his baby sister in the hospital and what she gave him.

Our son had just turned 4 when his little brother was born ~ he was given a t-shirt with a dinosaur on it that said "Best Big Brother in the World" and he wore it to the hospital proudly (all 3 days!!! :).

When our daughter was born, we bought a kid digital camera for him. We asked him to help us get lots of pictures of his new sister. He loved having a "job". The pictures are funny...iv's, tile flooring, the toilet, nurses shoes. I don't think he got any pictures with people in them. :) But it served it's purpose. He was distracted and had a job to do while everyone else "Oohhed and Ahhed" over the new baby. The quality of the pictures isn't great, but he has never seemed to mind. I save all the pictures. It gives me a chance to look at things through his eyes. Two and half years later, and the camera still gets brought along for special events and occasions.

Our baby daughter "gave" her big brother a fun new sprinkler to run around in in the backyard. He loved it.

I wouldn't overthink this ... just choose a special toy -- inside or outside -- that your son would enjoy.

my 4 yr old loves trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, tow trucks, you name it. Maybe you could get him an ambulance as a token reminder of the hospital trip.

About a month before baby number three was born we took a "family trip" to build-a-bear. My 2 girls got to make a special stuffed animal friend. I explained that Mommy might need to sleep more after the new baby or I might be spending time with him/her and they could cuddle their new friend and remember that Mommy loves them and things will go back to normal soon. Then when the baby (boy) arrived, he brought his sisters new clothes for the animal friends. They had to dress their friends and show the baby. They still talk about that trip and they remember their brother bringing them a present. (He’s three now).
Maybe the new baby could bring him an outfit or some sort of accessory for his stuffed animal to play with.
Good Luck !!!

That is the same difference between my 2 kids, 4 years. :) Older DS is really into Thomas and had been showing me this one train in the little catalog for 2 months. I had always told him "Maybe for Christmas" but found it in the store right before baby was born so baby got him the train he wanted.

One idea is a Leapster or DS if your son doesn't already have one, or a new game if he already has one of these game consols. There might be a lot of waiting around in the hospital for him (with a lot of 'no running around' and 'please try to be quiet'), and not much to do. My child loves new games, plus it would give him something quiet to do.

Didn't read your responses so not sure if this has been said, but when my youngest daughter was born, I found this awesome book about sisters. Maybe you can find one about being a big brother/brothers.
