I am pregnant and due in 7 weeks. I have a 3 yo daughter and I want to make sure this is a special day for her as well. We have been making it a big deal about how she is going to be a Big Sister :) but I wanted to get a few recommendations on what some of you may have done or have given to your little ones to celebrate them being a Big Sister or Brother. By the way I have purchased a few "Big Sister" shirts but I am wondering about other ideas. Such as toys, books, jewlery, etc. Thanks for your suggestions!!!

What can I do next?

I'm about 37wks and have an almost 3yr old. For her Big Sister gift we picked out those plastic building blocks, because she loves to build castles! I know she will love it and hope it will distract her from the attention that will be going towards the baby. Good Luck to you!!!

AS a big brother gift, we gave our son one of those kid digital cameras. We made a big deal about how you have to be a big kid to have camera. We asked him to get extra pictures of his new baby sister for us. We made it sound like his "job" on her birth day. We gave it to him the night before my induction. Our goal was to give him something to do that would be a distraction from all the attention baby would be getting. The pictures are hilarious. Not one picture of a person... the tile floors, my i.v., the nurses shoes, a chair. But he was happy with his gift and his "job" and it worked like a charm. While he was busy playing photographer, everyone else met the baby. It seemed to work rather well for us. The quality of the picture are about that of a cell phone, but it didn't matter to us. Now two years later, he still uses his camera rather often. He likes to let everyone know it was his gift for being such a great big brother. Congrats!

My youngest is 3 weeks old today and honestly I had the same thoughts. I bought small books, stickers, a small sticker book, and a few other little things for my two older boys (4 and 2 1/2 years old) but now I am saving them for their Easter baskets. EVERYONE brought them something to the point where my 4 year old almost expects something when someone walks through the door. They are both pretty happy about the baby, but I was shocked by how many things people brought them. (Grateful, but surprised--although I usually bring something for older siblings with a new baby, too.)

So, I would keep it small and talk up a date you'll have with her when the baby is old enough for Daddy to give him/her a bottle. My husband gets to start the first one anytime after today and my oldest is very excited that he's going to go "out" with mommy alone (we'll probably get fries and a smoothie at McDonald's, but he doesn't care). Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

My son was almost 3 years old when my daughter was born. We purchased some disposible cameras for him to use at the hospital and when we first came home. Then we took them to get developed and he got to pay for them himself and we made a photo album. It was a fun way to see things through his eyes of when his sister was born. Plus, he had fun and wasn't bored at the hospital.

One book that my DD loved was called "I'm A Big Sister" http://www.amazon.com/Im-Big-Sister-Joanna-Cole/dp/068814...
We read this book all the time before my son was born and she loved reading it to him after he was born (because she had memorized it by then). We also loved reading "Brothers Are for making Mud Pies"
http://www.amazon.com/Brothers-Making-Pies-BROTHERS-MAKIN...
This series comes in handy for any member of the family. When my son was born my DD had just turned 2yrs old. She loved to play ball, any kind of ball. So the baby's gift to her was a pink soccer ball, with princesses on it. DD is now 7, she still has the ball and refers to it as "This is the ball my brother gave me". It is very sweet.
We also gave her a hand held video system (leapster) to help keep her busy while "visiting" at the hospital.
Good Luck

We bought my oldest a cute hand puppet from her baby sister.

And also, make sure she has her own baby doll and related accessories.

When my two oldest became big sisters, they each got a necklace from the new baby. They weren't really expensive, but they were nicer than just plastic play stuff. They wear them a lot.

What my oldest girls really had fun doing was picking out a gift to give to the baby at the hospital. When I took my oldest to buy something for baby #2, she decided that the new baby needed a blankie pal to sleep with because she loved sleeping with her pals. She was so excited to wrap it herself and bring it to the hospital with her when she met the baby. When I took both girls shopping for baby #3, they also picked out a blankie pal. It's kind of cute because each girl's gift has become that special sleeping item and we can't go anywhere without them!

My favorite tradition when welcoming new babies is to make them matching blankets. I love my cousin's... Her older DD's says "I am ____'s BIG SISTER!!!' While the baby's says "I am _______'s LITTLE SISTER!!! (each blanket had the other sibling's name.)

We had our daughter make a picture for our baby and framed it and hung it in the baby's room. It was my older daughter's handprints and she "signed" her name. My goal was to hang baby handprints in my older daughter's room after she was born, but that hasn't happened yet.

Whatever you get, have it in your hospital room so you can say it was a gift from the new baby.

Sort of similar to some other responses but a bit different and for my boys very special. My oldest got to go to Build-a-Bear and pick out bear for the baby - he brought it to the hospital and gave it to his new brother. They are now 8 and 10 and that bear is the number one stuffed animal for my youngest - he knows the story and for sure that is a reason for it being as special to him as it is. Also, my oldest likes to remind us that he was the one that picked it out and made it.

got to say they best thing to get her is her own baby. Boy or girl depending on what you are having. Then give her baby to her at the hospital after she meets her baby brother/sister. She will naturally want to take care of her baby while mommy takes care of hers. It will really help you out when you need to focus on the baby and she wants attention, you can help her take care of her baby at the same time. Most little girls want to be just like mommy, so this really helps!

When my younger son was born, I bought a few things for his older brother, who was two at the time, to give him - a little stuffed animal and a book. I showed him ahead of time, then took them to the hospital. When he came to see the baby for the first time, I gave him the gift to give to his brother. He felt very special. I also tucked a few little surprises for my older son into my overnight bag. That way, while he was at the hospital visiting, he had a few new things to play with, and the baby wasn't the only one getting gifts.

I think having her own "baby" is a must.

My dd was 3 also when my son was born. We baked cupcakes together and froze them. Then when ds was born, we had grandma bring the cupcakes to the hospital and we had a bday party for the baby (actually filled the hosp room with friends, for just a short while!)
