Getting Too Hot in Car Seat

Does anyone else have this problem? It's still cool here and we carry the car seat in with us wherever we go, but my 4 month old seems to overheat a lot in the car. We dress him lightly, have a sunshade on his window, keep the car cool, and occasionally open the windows, but after a while in the car seat, he'll start crying hysterically and when we pull over and take him out of the car seat, his back is soaking wet with sweat. We've got a Chicco key fit car seat. Any suggestions? I'm really concerned about the Georgia summer. He seems like a warm-natured baby naturally. Thanks, moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm trying the towels and have ordered the baby bee cool.. I'm also planning on getting one of those foam fans!

Pretty common, I had sweaty babies too. Both boys would sweat their little behinds off in the car seat as babies! If he starts crying, that will make him sweat too, so it may be he's not initially sweaty, but when he starts crying, he gets sweaty.

If you have a car that doesn't have seperate rear cooling vents, point the vents in the middle of the dash (between the drivers and passengers seats) up towards the ceiling to bounce the AC to him. Also when we lived in TX I bought a small clip on fan, it was one of those with the foam blades, and it took two AA batteries, and had a clip so I clipped it ot the headrest and that helped to keep the AC blowing back onto him after it was bounced off the ceiling. I had a small sports car then.

We live in Minnesota now, but it still gets hot and muggy in the summer. I used that fan again with our youngest, he rear faced until he was 3, and that fan came in handy every summer he was rear facing.

Keeping him cool by light layers, dressing him in cotton, bouncing the front vents to the ceiling to hit him, a small fan that clips on (make sure it clips to something for safety) will all help.

I always put a terrycloth face towel (a real absorbent one, with rough loops, not velour) on the seat behind the baby in the summer, it helps keep the poly fabric from feeling warm. Make sure you launder it without fabric softener so it's absorbent. I sit on one too in the hot car.

My daughter is also a warm natured baby:) We had the same issues. Have you tried taking off his shoes and socks? It seems weird, but it seems to help cool off our little one. She is 17 months old and we have cut all the feet off her footie pajamas so she'll sleep at night. For some reason when she gets too hot, cooling her feet first seems to help and we no longer have a sweat soaked baby. Most her shoes are kinds that don't require socks, in the car we take them off and then slip them on before we go into a store.

I heard an interview from a young mother and entrepreneur on television. She solved this problem and started a business in the process. Here is the link for her web site. Hope this helps.

They have changed a lot of fabrics in car seats from cotton to polyester. I hate it. We had an old seat with great fabric with our first two 100% cotton and now we have a heat storing polyester seat and I hate it. Not much you can do other then place a cotton receiving blanket down first.
