Our gas water heater is old and we are going to replace it, to moms out there who are expert/familiar with this type of thing, is it better to get a gas water heater or an electric one? Any specific brands you recommend, I appreciate it so much, thanks moms!

What can I do next?

Hi, M.M.

Gas is cheaper than electric.
You already have a gas line in place.
Hotpoint is good.
Just a thought.

Gas. Electric rates were deregulated in PA and are expected to continue to go up significantly. Plus, as others have said, if you have gas, you always have hot water.

I think the tankless are a good idea, but remember, they have to be serviced once a year, and the cost of the service often just about evens out the cost of the savings. But, of course, they are still better for the environment.

Electric will never be as efficient as gas (propane and the like).
We LOVE our tankless propane water heater and recommend it to everyone. It's a Rinnai and it's great!

It depends on your electric rates, in my opinion. Electric and gas both work about the same. Our electric rates here are the highest in the country, so for that reason I would never purchase electric anything!

Have you checked into one of those instant ones that are gas? My neighbor has one and they love it. You never run out of hot water (unless you run out of gas, lol).

I love our gas hot water heater. With gas when you lose power you can still take a hot shower. Also, a gas hot water heater heats the water faster than electric. If you can I would check into the hot water on demand system. It isn't suggested for the area where I live.

How often do you have power outages? If they are frequent than I would go for natural gas. Otherwise it would come down to which would you rather burn more of natural gas or electricity?

I believe my gas water heater is a Reliant/Reliance(??) I did have a problem with an expensive yet important part failing on it but it was still under warranty so I did not have to pay for the repair. Still it was a pain in the butt so I am not so sure I would recommend that brand. Although now that I think of it, it is about 11 years old now Gulp!

gas is cheaper but you have to light the pilot and that can be a hassle if you don't know what you're doing (which we don't so we have to pay a professional). If you can afford it, go for a tankless.

We have a tankless water heater and I love it. Our electric bill has come down. Our gas consumption has gone up some but we have hot water on demand, can take as long a hot shower as we want and never run out of hot water. Look into a tankless hot water heater and research all your options very well before making one selection over another.
