Wanting to Replace Water Heater with a Tankless

I need to know if anyone out there has a tankless water heater. We've been looking at them for quite some time but I'm concerned because I don't know enough about them. I talked to a plumber about the Rinnai and I want to mount it on the outside of our house so we won't need ventilation for it plus I've heard you have to drain them occasionally.
Are we going to get enough hot water with this new system? Will mounting it outside be a problem? Our plumber tells us he's had one for 25 years now and it is mounted on the outside of his house, he loves his. But he also sells and installs them so I just want to know if all this is true or is he just trying to sell me. Just need to know if there are any draw backs to this kind of system before we take the plunge.

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
My name is S. and I would like to share about the tankless water heaters. I had a 3000 square ft. home in Ms. a few yrs ago with 3 bathrooms. The tankless water heater was the best thing we did. I had 3 teenagers at home at that time. No one ever ran out of hot water. I also had a 80 gallong whirlpool tub that I could fill up with hot water and never worry about running out of hot water. Now it is more energy effecient to go with a gas water heater. I could wash clothes, run my dishwasher and fill my tub all at the same time. WONDERFUL! I would not have any other form of water heater again. Any more info you can contact me at ____@____.com Good luck

Hi,
My husband installed our tank less in about two days. He did this using a "how to" book, the instruction manual, and the internet. The install price was going to cost more than the unit it self!!
It is mounted outside, on the opposite side of the wall from were the old tank was. Doing that made it easiest for my husband not to have a lot of pipe work. If the new unit is far from the old unit you'll need gas pipe line, water line, etc. It will be a good idea to have a professional look at the unit after installation to make sure everything is done properly - we did.
The exterior tank less is great.
We have a piece of foam over some of the pipe work so none develops frost, in the event we have a night the weather is below freezing. I have never heard of my husband saying anything about draining it.
The only maintenance that I know of is, if your power goes out you may have to press power on the control panel to get hot water again - very simple. It does take a couple seconds to run really hot water from a faucet far away from the tank.
For example, if you have a large house and you want hot hot water for a bath in the bathroom far away from the tank you will likely have to let the hot water run for a few seconds before it will be truly really hot hot. This is because there is water still in the pipes between the water heater and your bathroom that has to be flushed out and the new water needs a couple seconds to become hot to the degree that you want.
For us, we love this. We always set our sons' bath time temp to his desired temperature and put the water on full hot - (no water out of the cold faucet)... and the water is always no hotter or colder than what we selected on the water heater control panel.
Same in the back yard for sprinkler fun, or plastic pool days. You can hook up a garden hose to your tank less or just... fill desired warm water in pool and you're all set.
No chattery teeth. :)
Good Luck!

Hi there, I don't usually respond, but for this one I can speak from experience. My husband has recently installed one in our home by himself. He is a mud engineer, with common sense about pretty much anything around the house. He said it was not hard to install, and we purchased ours off of ebay. My electric bill dropped about $75.00 a month. Also I read responses about pressure and running water at a slow flow. This is all false, at least it is at my home. Nothing has changed with pressure and water flow the only thing that that has changed is my lower utility bill and the fact, that I can take a bath, run my washer machine at hot water level, run dish washer, etc...etc... and never lose hot water.
It was one of our best investments, and I also gained a pantry with the closet the older water tank was stored.
Hope this helps and I HIGHLY recommend them.

We replaced our water heater that was in the attic to a Rinnai (tankless) water heater....I wished we would of centrally located it in the attic, as i feel it takes awhile to get hot water to the bathrooms on the other side of the house. It more or less over the kitchen and laundry room. Our old hot water heater was 20 yrs. old and needed replacing. We are not dissatified with it, just maybe should of gotten 2 smaller ones and place where the other 2 hot water heaters were before.
Good luck to you...louisiana

We looked into this when we built our house. If I remember right, if you wanted HOT water, you had to run the water very slowly. So, you'd have less pressure than normal to get it really hot. The faster the water runs, the less time it would have to heat up. Maybe something has changed or there is a better system, but we decided against it because of that.

C.,

We recently inquired about a tankless water heater as well. This is what I was told... First, you can't have a tankless water heater if you use electricity (instead of gas) to run it. That sold us, because our entire house is electric. Second, he also told me that it is based off of pressure. So if you want to run a shower, dishwasher, washing maching it is fine, but if you want to say, quickly rinse your hands with the hot water you won't get any water. It seems that you'd have to turn the faucet on wide open. But that could be something you could get used to. I have NOT gotten a second opinion, so I am not sure if what he is telling me is true. I would ask the Rinnai dealer those questions.

i work for a plumbing company and lots of people are switching to tankless. You will get enough hot water for this system, it heats on demand. It saves energy. Its a really good product, i would check online for reviews and what everyone is saying. My advice is if you can get one, do.

we don't have one, but my parents do, and they love it. they have never had any problems, other than the water being too hot sometimes. now, there are only two of them in the home, but my sister, brother in law and her son lived with them for a while, and i think they had enough hot water even then. theirs is in the garage, so i don't have any outdoor advice.

I do not have one of these, but I used to work at a building supply store. They were a very popular item with the contractors. I would get more opinions, but a lot of the contractors that came in had excellent reputations, and I cannot imagine them installing an inferior product.

hey C.! if this is the water system that is heated by solar energy only, we are also planning to buy one! i've heard nothing but praises on this system. it says a whole lot of money in the way of your gas bill, if you're currently heating your water via natural gas!

i was looking on the internet for the website of the company selling those systems here in my city. however, the entire site is in spanish! if you are able to read this language let me know and i'll send you the link!

Hi C.,
I work at HomeDepot and we have the tankless water heater. I work in garden so I don't know a lot about it. What I wanted to tell you is to go in any HD and ask about it. That should help make up your mind. And I thought they were pretty new. Not 25 years old. The one we have is it only heats it up when you turn on the hot water so you do save on your energy bill because it is not always keeping it hot. I hope we are talking about the same thing. We might be cheaper to.
