We love Balderdash. Making up definitions to fool the group is so much fun...but, maybe we're just nerds!!!

Hi there S.,

It sounds like you'll be pretty busy for New Years :). Well one game that I remember playing at a Halloween party, where not everyone knew eachother was the 'Who am I' game. Here are the rules for that:

WHO AM I
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Objective: A guessing game where you try to figure out the name of the thing or person attached to your back.

Categories:
Groups, Adults, Baby Showers, Bridal Showers, Ice Breakers
Game type:
Passive. Little or no movement is required.
Players:
2 or kore players.
Needed: Papers with names and pins or tape

Rules: Pick a category such as cartoon characters, movie stars, vegetables, etc. Pin the name of one of these items on the back of each guest as they arrive. Tell them that they need to find out who they are by asking other people for help. The rules are:

1. Ask "yes" or "no" questions only.
2. Answer yes or no to questions only.
3. No removing your own name tag to find out. If you ask, anyone will help you find out your identity.
4. If you need people seated or grouped up this may be a good way to do it. Have place cards at the seat of each item. Or have a few different categories of item to guess. Then when it comes time to group up have the cartoon characters go here, vegetables there, etc.

This game was so much fun and we even did a few rounds of it. But we did it a little different. The hostess made for us all a headband to wear with a slit in the front where the index card fit right in. Yes, we all looked a bit silly but had a good laugh over it. So we all sat in a big circle in the livingroom and the first person started off and everyone could answer until that person got a 'no' answer then it moved on to the next persons turn. If someone guessed who or what they were the hostess had another new index card with a new person or thing they had to figure out who they were. Kids love this game too, as a family of seven this is an after dinner game we've played very often. Have a great New years S. and good luck!! PS. I have a picture of us from when we played this game and there you can see our silly headbands, if you want, I can email you the picture, just let me know :).

I like farkle to, Halarium, and Pictionary (but with big drawing board. Or you can set up different tables with different games like Texas Holdem at one table, skippo for women at one table, spades ate one table and etc.

LCR is a great game and it is at Spencers. It is about $7. I noticed that someone mentioned needing $3 to play but you can set the limit to what you want since you have children playing. We play with our kids and use either three dimes or three quarters so it would not be as expensive. Have fun!!

Something that we have done and everyone has enjoyed is having a basket with small pieces of paper for people to put their New Year's resolution on and in the basket. Then at a point later in the evening we read the resolutions and everyone guesses who wrote which one.

Happy New Year!

I second LCR. Yes, you can buy it at Spencers. I had never heard of it until Christmas Eve when someone brought it to play. All ages can play it's so easy...don't have to think! My 6 year old did great and won. You do need $3 per person to play though...but lots of laughter and fun!

I really liked Tonica's idea of sitting in a large circle around the room wearing the headbands with the name of a person, place, or thing on an index card stuck up in the headbands - - and then everyone is trying to guess who, what, where they are.

An idea that I would add is: In the first round, before asking a "yes-no" question, each person first TELLS THEIR NAME and HOW they met the host/hostess. This is a interesting way that guests may see how they all are connected - - one or two degrees of separation!
