Fibroadenoma of the Breast

Hi - I recently went for a mammogram and they sent be back for more pictures and an ultrasound. The radiologist says she thinks it's a fibroadenoma (benign growth) but wants me to go for a biopsy to be sure, because I'm 37. She said if I was in my 20s she would have sent me home and just watched it. Regardless, it is about 1 cm in diameter.

I am freaking out - I know that I should believe her and that it will most likely be just that. But, I'm so, so nervous that I'll be the in the 20% of biopsies that come back cancer.

Any words of encouragement or experience for me? If you have had a bad experience, please don't share! You'll just make my anxiety worse! I have a 7 and 4 yo - I'm terrified!

Thanks!

You are going to be fine. Doctors do not mess around or give false hope when they are afraid it is cancer. Really, you are fine!!! I have so many girlfriends that have had biopsys and everyone of them had benign growths. Not a single one had cancer. You won't either. Try to relax.

My sister, who is 44, was just diagnosed with a fibroadenoma. She, too, got a biopsy which confirmed the completely benign diagnosis. The doc said no worries, and isn't even going to remove it.

Be glad your doctor is being cautious and doing a biopsy. I would stay off the Internet as you can get lost in a web of too much information and misinformation.

Good luck and God speed!

Hi- I had a fibroadenoma about a year ago, same story- they biopsied it and it came back as that. They didn't even take it out- they put a teeny tiny staple in it so in future mammograms they'll know that this has already been seen and cleared.

You'll be fine. I trusted the doctors who, like you, felt it was nothing but wanted to be sure. They don't give false hope, and they know what they're doing. I know you won't feel totally better until you hear the good news, but take some comfort in the words of the doctors, which was encouraging news.

Good luck!

To follow up on B.B.'s comment that it's a good chance it's benign: fibroadenoma is always benign. It looks totally different on the xray but they will usually do a needle biopsy just to make sure.

If the radiologist felt it was something to be concerned with she would tell you and they would be urgently doing the biopsy. Anything medical is always concerning but in this case I think it's going to be ok for you.

Take several deep breaths while saying to yourself, "I am OK. This will be OK!" Focus on the positive outcome. Stop yourself each and every time you start to think about the worst case. You have control over how you feel by controlling your thoughts.

I've had a couple of friends who had biopsies and they were normal. You gain nothing by scaring yourself. In fact you hurt yourself and your family. Several deep breaths. "I'm OK."

I had a fibroadenoma in my late teens and they removed it. It was totally fine. There is a good chance the lump is benign.

Had one in my early 20s. It was removed and was benign. If it feels or looks on the imaging as encapsulated (one single piece) and not "branched out", then there's a really good chance that it's benign. I wouldn't worry about it.
