Feeling Glum About How Fast My Son Is Growing Up

My 2 year old is becoming increasingly independent and I just look at the pics of his younger, pudgier self and I'm just tearing up!! I can't believe how fast he is growing up and while I celebrate all of his milestones, a little piece of me cries for the little baby who used to sleep snuggled into my arms. I wish I could time travel and enjoy those precious little moments when he was barely bigger than my hand. Man, time flies by. I can't believe how emotional I've been about this the past couple of days. I don't think the PMS is helping..lol. Since I need to ask a question, you think it's time for a 2nd? ;)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas, I really needed your responses. Most of my friends don't have babies and well...some things only fellow Mommies can understand. :)

Looking at my 3rd (and last!!)... I DO have moments where I miss the baby days... but then he jumps off the couch/sits on the dog/throws a bowl of food, and I don't miss it anymore, not even a little :)

ETA... if I'm going through baby withdrawl, I remind myself that 2 of my girl friends just had babies, and it's about time my brother and SIL started trying! Those babies I get to love on... and give back :)

Maybe it's time for a second, but that one will grow up, too :-) There have been stages that I am sad (briefly) to move on from, but each new age is even better!

AAww it's OK Mommy,

I SO understand! I get like this sometimes too... and mine are 18 and soon to be 16.

A few weeks ago my 18yr old was standing in the hall talking to me when I noticed the picture just behind and to the right of his head. It was of him as a toddler taking a bath in the sink. I looked at the pic and then him again and burst into tears! LOL He just gave me a hug and let me cry on his shoulder for a minute.

I know a mother at my son's taekwondo place who's sons will be in 10th and 12th grade next year.
She is always getting upset over how fast they are growing.
We all have moments that we wish we could bottle up and take out every so often (I wish I could rock my 6 month old to sleep again).
BUT - I also know some people who have some children who will never grow up.
They will be 75 years old taking care of a 50 year old who will never be potty trained.
Eventually when the parents die, their child will have to be in an institution/nursing facility.
Growing up and developing into self sufficient adults who are capable of raising their own families is not the worst thing there is.
Personally, I'm very happy with our one son and even though he's 12 now, he says he never wants to share me with another sibling.
He's a sweet kid and a J. to raise.
We don't feel like we need a larger family, but that's just us.

How funny - I thought you were talking about a teenager which is my situation LOL! Mine are 17 & 14.

You have so much to look forward to; enjoy every moment. And yes, it's time for another baby imho (if it's God's will for you)! <3 Lots of luck to you guys - you sound like a great mama to love your baby so much.

The nice thing about having subsequent babies is that we tend to worry less, and cherish more, during those early weeks when they are SOOOOO tiny and helpless, and so very precious. We are so sleep deprived that we forget how quickly the time passes. But the 2nd time around, we know this ahead of time and so we can take a moment and really let it sink in. Atleast that's how it went for me. With our first baby we worried about every little thing, and before we knew it, he was 2 years old! With our 2nd, I distinctly remember holding him as a newborn and infant, and rocking him night after night as he fussed and cooed and everything inbetween. Though I was exhausted I made a point to cement it into my memory. I still remember the songs I sang, the music we listened to, and what it felt like to sit and rock him and nurse him, etc. I think doing that must have helped me 'cuz now I am truly enjoying watching them grow bigger by the minute! They are now 7 and 9 and growing like weeds, into little men, it seems! Of course I long for the days of holding my sweet babies but like some other posters have said, I can get that fix from my friends and family who have babies :-) Good luck and enjoy your precious family.

Sounds to me like you are ready for another baby!! What a good Mama you are ~ I have 4, and I couldn't imagine my life without any of them ~ I would even consider having more if I could afford it and had somewhere to put them all. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to live in a mansion..... :0(

oh my-I hate to tell you but that feeling is just going to get worse! My baby is coming on his 10th birthday and I can't figure out where the time has gone. He is really starting to seperate from me now and it is breaking my heart. I know it is how it should be but it doesn't make it any easier. I think about this a lot and get so emotional every time. I sometimes even tear up when I see a mom with her young boys -it brings back so many great memories. I would give anything to have my little babies back although I adore the little men they have become. And if I were younger I would most definitely have another baby.

Aww .. I am in the same boat! I thought I was the only one feeling so sad about my baby growing big so fast. He is 14 months now, trying to walk on his own. I am so excited and celebrate all the milestones , but I feel sad too. I was putting away his baby toys - playmat, bouncer etc and I couldn't stop the tears :( I wonder why babies can't remain babies forever. lol. I really miss that little baby of mine. I having been feeling this way ever since he was 6 months old. But this little guy he has turned to is so much fun too. I enjoy every moment I have with him and still feel time's flying by! Wish there was a pause button!

Well, my son is 4.75 years old, and will be going to Kindergarten in the Fall. That is SOON!
I feel like you.
He is growing up. So fast.
My little Dude.
I am home with him, he also goes to Preschool part-time, and I feel sad/bittersweet about him growing up. Aw shucks!

I also have an 8.75 year old daughter who will be in 4th Grade soon.
OMG!

But no way... am I going to have another baby, just to fill in my hole in my heart.
Unless I happen to have an accidental pregnancy, I know that my 2 kids are enough for me.

This is, a Rite of Passage, for a Mom. Seeing their kids grow up.
It is "our" Milestone... too. To embrace.

I know exactly what you mean. My little man just turned three a few days ago. It makes me so sad that he isn't a baby anymore. Thinking about it will actually make me cry. On the other hand, I am really enjoying watching him grow and learn. He is at such a fun age. I'm also looking forward to all the things we wil be able to do as he gets a little older. The weird thing is, I don't feel this way about my daughter. She is 9, and I have always celebrated her milestones.

Time does fly by! My DD is turning 2 next week, and I was just thinking about how much she has grown up (especially in the past few weeks!).

I'm guess i'm the "odd one out," though...I'm SO glad she's past the infant stage (maybe because I'm 32 wks pregnant and terrified of figuring how to manage both an infant and a 2 year old). I was sorting through her baby stuff (to get ready for the new one) and remembered what a hassle all the "baby" gear and activities were. I'm sure I'll miss "those days" when my 2 daughters are "all grown up" but for now, I'm loving the toddler stage!

I was told I couldn't have children so, when I fell pregnant, I promptly resigned from work to stay home with my "miracle baby". Ironically, it was my husband who first started saying we should try for a 2nd one as there was a good chance I wouldn't be able to fall pregnant for a long time. In the end it only took me 6 months (no medical intervention either time - except for the deliveries being c-sections). Talk about time going past too fast ... my "babies" are 18 years and 15 years old respectively!! Every age has its good and bad. Enjoy your 2 year old because, before you know it, he'll be a teen! Best wishes to all. :)

It's amazing how fast they grow, huh? I like your idea of time traveling. And yes, it sounds like it might be time for that next little one.
Happy day,
