Ear Infection Success W/o Antibiotics??

Hello,
My daughter has an ear infection and we are trying (with the doctor's blessing) to treat it w/o antibiotics for a few days to see if she can beat it on her own. She's been sick a lot this winter, so we're not sure her immune system is up to it, but want to try. Anyone out there successfully beat an ear infection with alternative methods like garlic oil in the ear, etc.? We are using Motrin to manage pain, but would love to hear of any safe home remedies to rid the ear of the infection. What did you do? For how long? My daughter's had ear pain/infection for 5 days and we've been told to give it 2 more days. She is otherwise healthy - no fever, good energy. Thanks!

The American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends not treating with antibiotics unless there is a high fever for > 2 days. Most ear infections are actually viral in origin so antibiotics do not really even help- they just tend to run their course in the same amount of time as the time you take antibiotics.

So, it isn't necessary to do anything other than help your dauhter with pain. Tylenol, motrin and heat (best through a warm compress to the ear or a heating pad) will do wonders for pain. If she develops a high fever or te infection does not resolve on its own in about 7-10 days I would return to the doc, there may be bacteria involved in that case. Hope she feels better soon.

hylands (like the teething tablets) makes natural ear infection drops. My son has always slept better when he has an ear infection with the help of those.

Also, there are some natural ways to boost your child's immune system to try to keep her from getting sick again. We use infant powdered multi-vitamins from Shaklee. They can be mixed into juice or baby food. We also give our son their immune system booster called nutriferon. It's for adults, but we just grind it up and give him half of a tablet in his milk in the morning. (it can make the milk a little smelly, but he's never objected to it). It sounds like you're interested in more natural ways of staying healthy, so I'd definitely recommend checking out their website

If you know anyone who is breast feeding, a drop or two of milk will do. Probably once or twice a day.

Hi Susan,
We just did this last week. My son (age 5) had a sinus infection and we treated it without antibiotics.

I would love to share with you what we did. Send me a message with your email address and we can chat!
