We have a Sony and love it. It was the most expensive one at Best Buy, but it has an amazingly long battery life (13 hours). We love that it doesn't have to be plugged in half way through most of our car trips, and it has been a God send. The guy at Best Buy told us (grant it, this was almost 2 years ago now) that Sony had the best. I would just go in and talk to them about it (he also recommended their lower level models, so it seemed that just Sony in general was good).

We have had 3 now. The first one was a cheaper children's one. It lasted a year and stopped working. The second one was a Dynex, I believe. We had to return it after watching one movie because it quit working after that. We now have a Toshiba and LOVE it. I think it was approx. $120. (It was a christmas gift as they all have been.) We have only had it for a few months but it's easy to use, the screen flips around so you can have it in many different positions. Picture and volume are great. I'd buy another one on a heartbeat.

I just bought a portable DVD at Christmas and did tons of research. I definitely think that SONY is the way to go. I bought a low- to mid-range unit with a single screen...I think the sticker price was $189. We don't really use ours in the car...but I use it as a regular player at home and we take it on the airplane.

We have a Sony, not the high end one, a mid level one. It has a great picture and good sound (as well as can easily make it so the child can hear but the parent can hardly hear it, which is supper nice). The mid level one the battery does not last super long but all we have to do is plug into the lighter and we are good to go.

In general Sony makes good quality items, I would just go into a best buy or similar store and play with them. Sorry I do not know the the model of your portable Sony DVD player, but it is sitting in the car right now :)
