Portable Dvd Players

I am trying to find a portable dvd player for my 20 month old and can't find one that I'm sure about. Does anyone have any reviews on any that they have used? I would like one that doesn't cost a fortune, but is still a great product. I don't want a cheap made product that isn't a great buy, but the price is right.

What can I do next?

J.,

They carry a dvd player for children at Toys R Us for around $140.00 which is only about $25 more than the one you would get at WalMart that is easy to break.

We've bought two different ones from Walmart and so have other moms/family members I know. No name brand that we were familiar with and they both worked equally well. The only difference was the screen size. We don't do anything with ours other than watch dvds in the car, on vacation etc. and it is wonderful. I think we spent about $100 each.

Before you do this, you might want to give Marie Winn's The Plug-in Drug a flip-through. Most people already sense that TV and movies are not good for any of us, really, let alone such young brains. Trust your intuition rather than letting people tell you, "oh, everybody does it." Studies have shown the effects of tv-watching on grades, for one thing. 3rd-graders with TVs in their rooms have significantly lower grades than those who don't, for example.

TV- and movie-watching discourages an interest in books, learning, social development and active play because it's just easier to sit there and let entertainment happen.

Hi,
I came across a fisher price magazine that has the
Kid-Tough DVD Player. I plan on buying one for my 5 year old for christmas. It says that it will survive drop, after drop after drop. I'm not sure how durable it is because I don't have it yet, but I'm going to buy one. They are a little costly but if it is as true as it says it is, it will save me from buying another for a while. They run about $200 for the dvd player, car charger, battery saver, headphones, a/v cable for tv connection and headphone splitter to plug in 2 sets of headphones at the same time.
You can go to fisher-price.com to look at it. Also, I know walmart.com has it with the accessories all together in one price.

Hope this helps,
N.

I bought my 24 month old son a DVD player from Wal-Mart. It's an Audiovox (around $90.00 plus tax). It has held up rather well considering that my son has given it a toss across the room as well as dropping it several times. I have really gotten my monies worth. Good luck with your purchase.

Fisher Price just came out with a "Kid-Tuf" portable DVD player looks like the camera they have. We bought a Sony system but we don't like it because the kids can eject the DVDs themselves.

We're also looking for one for our 2 year old. We decided, since it was for long car trips only that we were just going to find a mid-level--not a super cheap one and not an outrageously priced one. It will be in a bag hanging on the back of the seat so my son won't have access to it. The Fisher Price One is around 179-200 depending on the store. I think that is a little high for something he will be out of in a couple of years. A regular one can at least be used a little longer. Target, Walmart, Toys 'R us, and Best Buy all of some under 130.

My son is 22 months. I bought a portable dvd player. Its made by Polaroid you can get the dvd player the case and remote and all the cords at Walmart for $100.00, its a swivel screen which is the best in my opinion because the kids cant mess with it. If you decide to get this one you can find them in the automotive section at walmart they are in a locked case.

unless you drive long distances on a regular basis i would not recommend putting a dvd player in the car. some of our best observations ("look mom! the sky opened up and i can see heaven!") for ex. and conversations have taken place in the car. i keep flash cards, book, colors, and 3-D glasses in a little rubbermaid tote for them on longer trips. i hope you at least consider this. i know you are a very devoted mother like myself, and i am trying so desperately to maintain a connection without letting 'technology', (computer, video games, cell phones, ect) get in the way of that. don't get me wrong, we probably watch too much tv and i talk on the phone too much, but car time is uninterupted time that i try to use wisely. best of luck to you!

Hi J.,
We got our 2 yr old a Coby DVD player with USB and SD Card Ports in it. It was on Walmart.com and New Egg.com I think.
I liked the fact that it has the slots for other stuff-we can take our card out of the camera and look at the pics Plus, we can download a couple of her favorite TV shows to the USB Thumbdrive and take them with us when we travel or when I'm gonna be busy and need her occupied. It has a swivel screen for in the car and mounts on the headrest with the screen flat. It came with the case to mount it, cords, headphones and AC and DC adaptors.
Oh-since I wasn't familiar with the brand (Newegg.com is a Great Place to look as they have some of the most extensive reviews-although some of it's pretty technical) I ordered it online (Walmart.com) and got the 3 yr protection plan (it was about 1/3 the cost of the player).
We have used it for other stuff-you can hook up your camera to it and see live feed just for fun :-). Also, the extra slots are a Great feature as she isn't stuck just w/ DVD's and it plays Music CD's too.
If you want the model # (this was the only one I could find Under $200 that had the slots and a case that came with) contact me and I'll pass it along.
I hope this helps-I researched for about 2 months before purchasing-wish I'd thought of this! :-)

I purchased our's from Walmart and even the cheapest is fine we have had ours now for 6 years and thier working just fine with no complains. Dvd players can be very helpful you can also purchase your child audio books that they can read along with the story, I bought awhole bunch of them real cheap at Dollar Tree for just a dollar each some have the video to go along with the book part and some just reads the story to the child while the child can read along or just listen, but my 5 year old loves either one. Theres educational one out there too that teach thier numbers,ABC's and so much more. I know if I didn't get our Dvd players (which are two screens set that slip over the front seats in a nice lil case that run off the vehicle or off batteries & remote)when we go on long travels that our children might get quite bored & inpatient. I only allow my kids to watch them when we go on long trips not around town so they look forward to using them! I hope I could help, have fun shopping!

Have you considered the Fisher Price FP 3 player? It doesn't play cds,but comes with a few pre loaded kid's songs and stories, and you can go to Fisher Price's website and download more, just like a real mp3 player. It comes with the usb cable for parents to download. It's small enough for kids to handle, and very durable. Made of that hard Fisher Price plastic. Not a real cheap price. I paid about $50, last Christmas @ Wal-mart, but sometimes you really do get what you pay for. You can find it on Fisher Price .com or walmart .com. They also were sold at Target last year. Good luck to you! Sorry thought you were talking about cd players until I read your question again. Well this is still a great product and my son loves to use his in the car.
