Does Anyone Have Any Experiences to Share About Twins?

I'm a bit scared. My daughter has been thin for a long time with a very flat stomach. She's 18, in good shape and has not been pregnant before. There is only one day she could have gotten pregnant so there is no doubt she is only 6 weeks a long. She's already starting a bump. I was nearly 4 months with my first before I started to show. I've seen people get way into month 5 even. Is it common to start show this early? It's been a long time. At what point can they hear the heartbeat on doppler?

So What Happened?

She's already been to the clinic. They said they would look for the possibility of twins since she gained 15 pounds in her first month before she even knew she was pregnant. In fact, it was the weight gain that made her suspect being pregnant. I don't know if I'd say twins run in the family. I only know of one set. My husband has brothers that are identical twins. I've heard of twins on my side of the family but not close enough relatives for me to even know who.

Yes, it could possibly be twins, but it could also be a singleton! Here is the question...when you say she is 6 weeks along...is that from the time you believe she conceived? If yes, in that case, counting from her last period (the way the medical field does to count "weeks", where the first 2 weeks are actually, "pre-pregnancy") she would actually be 8 weeks along. Now, if that's the case, they might be able to see the heartbeat(s) now via an ultrasound (hearing heartbeats on a doppler takes a while longer...)
The fact that she is thin and had a very flat belly makes it more likely, I would think, that she could look like she's showing earlier. There's not much room for hidden expansion in a washboard belly! LOL At 8 weeks (and I was thin but not VERY thin) I was already having to squeeze myself into my jeans, and felt much fuller around the middle than I thought should be normal. Also, could she have been "too thin?"...she may have needed those extra lbs to support any pregnancy and her body got her appetite and metabolism on track early on. A lot of the "bump" this early on, is fat buildup and bloating and water retention (some of us are lucky enough (yeah right) to look pregnant with PMS each month! LOL).
So, don't worry about twins too much yet...but if it is...double the love!

When I got pregnant with my first baby I was 110 lb I was 21. I didnt start wearing maternity clothes until I was 4 months, but I probably needed them much sooner. I was busting out of my regular clothes. But I noticed when I was first pregnant I was always bloated, I thought I was going to start. They are able to see the babies heartbeat on ultrasound @ 6 weeks and they should be able to see two if there is, as long as one isnt hiding behind each other. Also I heard a symptom of twins would be major morning sickness, I had it so bad with my second baby I had to be hospitalized and everyone asked me if I was having twins. Anyways all people are different in when they start showing. Do twins run in your family? Because I heard that matters too!

I have 2 year old twin boys. I showed early (I remember not being able to button my pants at 9 weeks), but everyone is different. In the end, I had gained 60 pounds, which is what my doctor recommended. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Good luck to you and your daughter!

I have 3.5 yr old twins. I am a small woman and was about 110lbs when I got pregnant. I finally started needing maternity clothes at about 18 weeks. Every woman is different. I had NO morning sickness, so the myth of extreme morning sickness is incorrect. And every woman gains wait at a different rate. Maybe it's the fact that she is small that makes the "bump" so noticeable already. Don't panick about twins until you know. And even then, don't panick. They are a true blessing from God. Congratulations on your future little miracle.

I say about 2mths they will be able to hear a heartbeat. Did your daughter take a pregnancy test? I know each women is different, some show early some wont show until later on. I think depending on the person. I would say dont be scared until you have reason to be, rule out anything first by a pregnancy test.

Hi Suzi, I have twins and i found out at 9 weeks that I was having them- via ultrasound. Weight wasn't really a determining issue for me at first.Good luck w/ your daughter! I am sure it will all be fine! Twins can be exhausting, but fun! (I also need to add that identical twins are not hereditary- anyone can conceive identical twins. :)
