Do I Really Need to Use Dreft?

My daughter is almost 10 months old and I have been using Dreft the entire time for all her garments. Occasionally I will put some fabric softner in with her clothes, to get them to smell good. She has had no allergic response to this. When and should I be able to switch to regular laundry detergent?

Nope! My kids did just fine without it. If you're concerned, you could use another free-type of detergent. I use the All free detergent & plenty o' fabric softener & my little guy has been fine. For my daughter I never switched to dreft, same with my oldest. I think it's good it exists for the kiddos who have really sensitive skin but most people don't need that extreme.

Whenever, it's not really necessary at all. If you are concerned about anything irritating her use free and clear detergent. Dreft really has nothing special in it....and it has artifical scent and such added to it as well. As far as I am concerned the only benefit is that it smells like babies. LOL

Hi, Christy. Because it's so expensive, I've never used Dreft for my son's clothes, and he'll be 4 this winter. I actually switched my family's laundry soap to a dye-free, perfume-free version (I've used Purex, and now I buy All Free and Clear from Sam's Club). If you're using a scented fabric softener, you won't smell the soap when the laundry's done, anyway. Downy fabric softener is also available in a dye- and perfume-free version, although the scented kind is fine; we just added a 2nd rinse cycle when he was smaller.

I hope this helps.

For my last child, I used All Free and Clear on all his clothes. I was already washing everybody else's clothes in it, so I just threw his in and nothing bad happened.

Don't add scented fabric softner, babies smell good enough!

I use All Free & Clear for my kids and have since they were babies. They've never had a reaction.

I've never used Dreft. I would just run my daughter's clothes thru an extra rinse cycle. She's never had a problem.

We never had a problem using regular detergent and fabric softener until this past week. My almost 3 year old broke out in a huge rash and I just realized it coincided with me using new fabric softener -- the Bounce kind. We'd previously used the Costco brand and never had any issues.

Every detergent/fabric softener is a bit different, so you never know what to expect. We have a baby in the house again, so I'm using the Dreft for both kids' clothes right now, but I think it's ok to start experimenting and see how she does with normal detergent.

I switched to Tide Free at about 6 months and we've had no issues whatsoever.

I think I switched around 6 months. I will also admit that I am thinking I may just skip the whole baby detergent thing (I used Country Save) and just use my Tide with my second that's due in 8 weeks.

I never used dreft (except for 1 or 2 times I went to Sam's and bought a big bottle because they had not Tide FREE). I have 2 kiddos - 26 mos and almost 11 months. I usually use Tide Free for sensitive skin and Bounce Free or Downy Free Fabric Softener. My daughter has 4 food allergies and a couple environmental (26 mo old) and she has VERY VERY sensitive eczema skin. The Tide and Bounce Free work way better at removing stains and dirt and do not mess with her skin. Plus, then we throw all of the kids clothes in with ours. My mom always used regular old fragrant laundry detergent for my sister and I (we are 31 and 28) and never bought anything special....marketing ploy? One thing I would advise against is using anything with Bleach in the kids laundry....even my son (11 mos) who does NOT have sensitive skin will get a prickly reaction to anything washed in bleach. Good luck and save your pennies -- buy the normal stuff!
