Disrupted Night Sleep at 7 Months

My 7 month old has been sleeping through the night for two months now, but in the past week, he has been waking up crying and screaming. I pick him up and he instantly begins to calm down, never fully waking up. After a couple minutes of light bouncing in my arms, I can put him back down in his crib and he does fine for the rest of the night. Last night, though, he woke up at midnight and again at 4 am. Is he having nightmares? Is he experiencing teething pain? I've been mindful of the temperature of his room. (We had previously used the Cry-it-out method and for two months he hasn't been waking.) He seems to have a slight cold (runny nose & a bit of congestion), which is why I started picking him up this week, concerned that he was having trouble breathing, so I put a cold mist humidifier in his room. Has anyone had this experience? Does anyone know what it was if their infant did this? If so, what did you do to help?
He is eating solids now and the last food I introduced was carrots (for the past four days), and I've never heard of a child having an allergic reaction to carrots.
I would love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience.

What can I do next?

I had the same difficulty with my son. We would feed him a bit more right before we put him to put. Also we started putting him to bed earlier. That stopped him waking at around 1am but he still was waking between 4-5 I would go and give him a quick feed and he'd go back to sleep. We use a humidifier also but he still wakes sometimes.
Also he started teething at that point. Just try to comfort as best you can. We did a little cry it out waiting for about 15 min before we'd go in, this helped with some of the 4 am wakeings. Good luck.

Considering your child's age and the stuffy nose, etc., it sounds like teething. Talk to your doctor about the appropriate dosage of tylenol or ibuprofen to give to your child to get through this. Good luck!

My daughter did the same thing: we began sleep training at 4 mos and she was a great sleeper by 5.5 mos. Then at 7 mos she started waking again for a week or two. Then she'd go back to sleeping great, then disrupted again for a week or two...and this scenario repeated on and off until she was about 10.5 mos. The Doc said as they hit cognitive and developmental milestones between 6 and 12 mos, sleep can often be disrupted. It was also disrupted when she was teething or had a cold, and we had to go through some level of sleep training all over again each time. Just hang tough, and use whatever method works for you to get him to get himself to sleep again. At 11 mos, our daughter got over this and slept consistently great again! So there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Don't rule out any food allergy even if it is something that isn't a "high risk" food. You can become allergic to anything at anytime in your life but this doesn't seem like a food allergy.
As to the waking in the middle of the night he can be waking because of teething pain. Watch him during the day and if he is drooling more or chewing on things very vigoursly, try giving him a small dose of tylenol. If he doesn't wake up that night then you know it is teething pain and you can choose to give him tylenol every night or just a little pat on the back to get him back to sleep. If he is pulling on his ear it may be an ear infection and needs to be seen by the doctor.

We're in the same boat with our 7 month old. He wakes up at least 2x a night. Before a month ago, he was sleeping through the night. I think it's teething. I just got the teething tablet and will see if they work. Good Luck

Hi there,

I feel for you, it's so frustrating when they used to sleep well and then start waking at night! We've been dealing with this on and off for months with our 14 month old. Perhaps he's teething? Or it might just be a phase? Sounds odd, but I've been reading that babies kind of regress every few months and go through these difficult phases. I've noticed that a lot of mommies post the same sort of questions at 4-9-11 months. See askmoxie.org...

Hang in there. And I'd agree with what another mommy wrote, try to be there for him when he's calling for you. It's so hard, but our little bundles of joy will be off to college before we know it, and sleeping through the night much sooner than that. :)

My daughter is 13 months old.. she's been going to daycare since 5 weeks.. unfortunately i had to return to work too soon, either way.. there has been this boy at daycare whom just started.. and just ended thank god.. that SCREAMED... the whole time he was there. My daughter started waking up almost every 2 hours during this time.. and when he left.. with in a week, she was back to her sleeping through the night. Check out if there are any additional stressers that are around her.

K.,

I your little one does not come down with a real cold in another day is is almost definately teething.

We went through this with our son and had the bad luck that all four of his front teeth came in at once. We used tylenol at night which really helped although he was also starting to crawl which definately disrupted his sleep.

If it is in fact a cold and he gets super congested you can also raise up one side of his crib to elevate his head a bit to to help with the congestion. You can also have him sleep sitting up in his carseat in your room if it gets really bad. For you sake I hope it is not a cold. :)

Gook luck and sweet dreams I hope!

probably teething. My baby did the same thing. It will pass. Just be there for him. Don't let him CIO when he is ill or in pain. Your ped. can look in his mouth and see if there is anything on the horizon.

Hi K.,

There are natural ways of addressing your babies needs such as drinking cleaning filtered water that cleans out the impurities, along with added nutrients to the water, filtered air so the lungs do not have to filter the the particles in the air, and whole food nutrients to assist his little body to help rebuild his immune system. You can also help him relax and sleep better on a magnetic pad.

I have found it really makes a difference putting your children in a healthier environment protects them from harmful toxins.

If you would like more info let me know.
