Hello My son is 7 1/2 months old and has had diarrhea since the Wednesday before last...this wed will be 2 weeks. I have taken him to the doctors and we are just doing cereal and formula only cut him off veggies and fruit! He has two bottom teeth already and we did notice last wed that he had a top tooth coming in (not the two middle ones) it is one next to them. NOw I know a babies body goes through things when they have teeth coming in but would it cause excessive diarrhea. Now he is not dehydrated and still seems quite himself playing and everything. My questions is could there be something else causing it. My doc said if it continues he is gonna have to see a GI doc and i hope it doesn't get that far.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well Thank you all for all your tips and thoughts. I just have been waiting it out..it got better for about 3 days and returned. I believe as one mom said its his teeth...his third one is through the gums but not totally dropped an the other one is breaking through. I just don't know how long I can deal with constant clean up. I catch him as soon as he does it and has not gotten diaper rash. I appreciate all of you who responded. I am praying it goes away soon!!

My pediatrician recommends probiotics to help kids get over diarrhea. He recommends a dusting of Culturelle in with the cereal once a day (an adult capsule, broken open and sprinkled on food should last about 3 days for a baby). The Culturelle can take a few days to work.

Otherwise, BRAT diet is about all you can do that I know of. Note on the BRAT diet - applesauce is helpful for diarrhea, apple juice can make it worse.

As for other things causing it - it could be teething - I assume you didn't change formula recently, or something like that? A formula or other food change could also cause it.

Also, I don't usually comment on other people's posts, but perhaps 1stTimeMommy misunderstood your post, because all the things that she recommends are things I've heard of to help constipation, and could make the diarrhea worse. Please don't try them.

You don't know either her or I to trust our advice implicitly, which is a reminder that you should run all ideas past your pediatrician before you give your baby any kind of natural (or unnatural) remedy...

My son didn't have diarrhea often, but when he did have it, it seemed to go on forever 3-4 weeks.
My pediatrician said once a gut is irritated it can stay irritated long after the initial source of irritation has been resolved.
That he's acting fine and is well hydrated is very good.
Stay on top of changing him fast as you can (diaper rash can be a complication of diarrhea) and slather his behind thickly with what ever diaper rash ointment works best for you.
Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (BRAT) (mashed bananas, rice cereal and apple sauce should be easy for his age) should help firm him up sooner or later and keep him well hydrated.
A little plain yogurt might help to balance his digestive tract.
Hang in there!

Aloe juice works wonders and it is safe. You can also get the tasteless kind.

or try prune puree in his milk or prune juice. If he eats sollids, offer him raisons and dried fruit. That can also help with the fiber.

If all else fails, try half a teaspoon of raw brown sugar in water. he will like the sweetness and it may give him a "blowout".

Or even benifiber powder for kids. It is tasteless and desolves completely in whatever you serve up. Water/Juice/Milk/Yoghurt, you name it... a teaspoon or two per day should do the trick.. of course not all at once momma.

good luck

Both of my kids had AWFUL diarrhea while they were teething. The kind that gave them raw bottoms. It very well could be from teething.

My oldest had terrible diarrhea from teething as well. She wasn't dehydrated and didn't seem sick or anything. It could be that. Did you try giving him bananas? That usually worked for my daughter. Good luck.

Try ultimate aloe juice. I don't know if it will help with diarrhea but it's worth a try. We all know how aloe heals the skin when we have a burn...this heals the digestive track. It's all natural and safe for babies. Strawberry kiwi is the one my kids love. Highly reccommend it.
