A good remedy that my pediatrician suggested and works great-
equal parts Lotrimin, Maalox, hydro-cortisone 1% and A&D ointment. I use double the amount of A&D to thicken the paste. It works wonders! Good Luck!

Try triple paste ( sold at target and pharmacies) over the counter and if not clearing up add a pea size amount of Lotramin ( anti fungal) to it. It will clear up the yeast /candida within a few days. good luck!

Hi M.! I haven't read any of the responses you've received so far so I don't know if anyone has told you this remedy or if you've already tried. Anyhow, coat him heavily with Vaseline, then apply a liberal amount of J&J Baby Powder, (this is one of those times you DON'T want to use generic brands). The Vaseline will help any further irritations and the Baby Powder will help absorb moisture. We have seven children and I can only count on one hand the number of diaper rashes we had to deal with because of a special diaper wipe we used. Get a Rubbermade (or similiar brand) cylinder shaped plastic bowl with a cover. Using BOUNTY (we've tried others and they just don't do as good a job, also DO NOT get ones with designs, the ink is not good, only white) paper toweles cut the roll in half. (I will tell you we've gone through many knives for even the sharpest will dull rather quickly cutting through the rolls. If you husband has a new, clean hacksaw it works ok, just discard the "lint" that develops while cutting). In the bowl mix 1 1/4 cup warm water with 1 tbl of J&J Baby Shampoo (we did find that Equate did do a fairly good job as well) and 1 tbl of J&J Baby Oil. Then put the half roll of paper towels in the bowl, cover and turn upside down. In approx ten minutes you have enough wipes to last approx a week, depending on how many other things you use them for (you'll find they are great for use everywhere). Like I said, using this "recipe" for wipes had endured for over 50,000 changes and rashes were not something we worried about. Be blessed!

A good friend recommended this to me about 2 years ago and I use it with both my kids to this day (they are 2 1/2 and 1) Mix creamy Desitin with Aquafor and Goldbonds medicated powder. There is no magic measurements, just get them about eaqual in whatever container you are going to mix them in. I call it our magic potion becuase I cannot believe it - everytime I use this the rash is gone the next day or within two applications at the most. If the rash is yeast related this probably won't work, but it is worth a try to anyone interested. Someone needs to market this mix premade, it is that good!

My son was lactose intolerant as an infant and would have chronic diarhea before he was diagnosed. He would naturally end up with severe diaper rash no matter how prompt in cleaning him I was. My periatrician said Desitin and a 1% hydrocortisone cream. It worked. We went from blood red rashes that even made me cry to a clear buttocks. Hope it will work for you as well.

M., I know exactly what you're going through. When my second son had it, it was so bad that it was starting to bleed and the dr said to put the Nystatin on it and it didn't do a thing, nothing worked. Until one of the mothers suggested based on her experience: wash it every time and don't let him sit in it wet. clean it off good and clean it off with water from the tub or wherever it's easier for you to get water on there and he will scream because it's sooo sore. Pat it dry don't wipe it off, let him be butt naked for a little bit. Depending on the age of your son, does he crawl yet? or is he walking or just able to lay on his belly which is great because you can put a diaper underneath him and let him pee into it and do it as often change him every two or three hours even if he is onler and doesn't pee as much as an infant you are trying to get that por backend healed and then put Destitin or whatever you prefer and I found destitin does work if you let his backend dry first then put the cream on there. Do it so much and smother his backend with it and he'll thank you for the soothing feeling. He may not want to sit on it because it hurts. It may be yeast infection or maybe he's allergic to something he ate, you can check into the food allergy but in the meantime do that cleaning and make sure it's dry, completely dry before putting the cream on. Hope it worked and let us (and let me) know. I'll pray for him and you to receive wisdom from Jesus.

hi M., the first thing to do is to stop using wipes altogether. just water with a soft paper towel or washcloth. you can use regular unscented baby oil - aka mineral oil, to clean the messy ones. there is also a spray by california baby called diaper area calming spray that you can use for the messy ones. but no wipes of any kind. if it is not yeast, give the baby a bath with no soaps, use a handful of baking soda in the water and dont rinse his butt. pat dry very very well, air dry after that. then load on triple paste. there is also a cream called pinxave that i have used, very thick, works really well but very hard to find. if it is yeast, check with the doc, lotrimin af 2x day works great for us. change often and gently. are you breastfeeding? if so, maybe cut out citrus, or if he is eating/drinking citrus. it was always a culprit for us. good luck, D.

I had the same issues where everything I tried didn't work. My son came home from the sitter's with a massive, raw rash on his thighs. The only thing I found to work magic quickly is Triple Paste. That cleared up the rash within 2 days. It's $20 for the big container...they make smaller tubes. Believe me, it is worth it! A little goes a long way. Ask your pediatrician if they have samples so you can give it a whirl before buying it.

Is it small red bumps, like yeast? It isn't uncommon for a baby to have a yeast infection and the dr will prescribe an antifungal like athlete foot creme. Also I love using Sensicare - or other *thick barrier paste* I get it @ the hospital since I work there and use it there, but it maybe found for adult incontinence. I agree with the others, make sure the butt is gentle patted dry -- should be with all changes before putting on the diaper.

Hi M.! None of those worked for my son either, but what did work were creams with zinc in it. I do believe A&D has a cream that has zinc oxide in it. Dries it right up! If you can leave the diaper a little on the loose side so that air can get to it that helps, and whenever possible no diaper at all is super great! I know it's tough, but if you can put a blanket down that can be easily washed it helps. If it's re-occuring diaper rash it may not be a diaper rash at all but an actual yeast infection! I know it sounds crazy but babies get them quite often, and yes even boys! It's as common as thrush, and pretty much the same thing just in a different location. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi M.,

I am a mom of two and they both suffered from constant diaper rashes and the best out there is PINXAV (pronounced Pink Salve). It is made with 30% zinc oxide which is twice as much as the more known brands. You have to order it on line from their website www.pinxav.com. It is very pricey approximately $20 for two 4 oz tubes but worth every penny. It cleared up their rashes in two days, and their rashes were severe at times as they both have very sensitive skin. Much better than butt paste which is number two in terms of diaper rash ointments. I know I sound like I work for the company but I don't, the product is just that good:-) Good luck.

My 2 year old twins just had a bad rash that wouldn't go away and it turned out to be the strep virus. My doctor said young children sometimes get around there instead of strep throat. I was completely surprised by this and felt bad for letting it go several days trying Desitin, A & D, and Buddreaux's Butt paste. They never really had rashes before. She suggested using Neosporin. Hi M.,
Since October my son has had several horrible diaper rashes. We went through three different prescriptions that only helped a little. Here's what we did: After taking off a poopy diaper I lay a chuck on the couch and sit him on it with no diaper while he watches his favorite DVD. I've done this many times and he only peed once (and it was on the chuck so the couch was fine). For a while Butt Paste was helping. Then I used a cream made by Lansinoh. Most recently I broke down and paid the big bucks for Triple Paste - which seems to work the best. Now I put something on him at every diaper change (whether he has a rash or not) and I keep alternating between different products. His changing table looks like a display in a drug store with all the tubes of creams and lotions.
A friend gave me a recipe from her doula for a great diaper cream: 1/3 regular A&D, 1/3 white A&D, 1/3 mylanta - but don't add too much mylanta, keep it thick. The mylanta will cut through any acid. We think that acidic and/or spicy foods is the culprit with our son.
Also, the Dr Sears website has some information about rashes and describes different kinds. If you check that out you could determine if this is something you can clear up on your own or if you need to make an appt with the pediatrician. Lots of luck to you!

First of all, you need to give him some naked time to let his bottom dry out completely. For diaper creams, I like the Burt's Bees or triple paste for really bad diaper rash. I would also not use baby wipes since they have irritating chemicals in them. Switch to soft paper towels (like Viva) soaked in water or soft wash cloths. I use 7th Generation wipes and diapers because they are unscented and don't have all the chemicals in them, and the diapers are really absorbent. I have had very few leaks and never had a poop blowout with them. If the rash does not go away I would consider switching diapers too. You can also use the Aveeno oatmeal bath (not the soap- it comes in a box and there are little envelopes of ground oatmeal). It's really soothing on the skin.
It could also be yeast if there are little red or white bumps that look like tiny pimples. In that case, you can buy some lotrimin af (yes, the athletes foot cream) and put it on 3 times a day. I used to mix it with the Burt's Bees and this was the only thing that got rid of it. Don't use baby powder since that makes the yeast worse.

Also - my daughter will ALWAYS get a diaprt rash if I give her orange juice, but the problem goes away if I water it dow, 50/50.

My daughter had a horrible rash and I tried some of the various remedies (triple paste, butt paste, cornstarch, airing out), her doctor even put her on 2 different medicines but none of that worked, so I wrote a note just as you did and one of the mothers said to use Calmoseptine. It cleared the rash up so fast it was amazing. You can get it at Walmart, it costs around $6 and works. Also, if he gets a lot of rashes you might want to switch to a diaper that is clorine free, like 7th Generation. I also stopped using wipes and just use water with a little bit of vinegar in it (another tip from one of the mothers) and a baby wash cloth. Good luck.

The other thing to do is remove dairy products...You don't say how old your son is, but it might be an allergic reaction, most likely dairy. If you're breastfeeding, you may have to cut out milk to try it, or something else you are eating (my SIL found out her son was allergic to strawberries because she was eating them, and he was reacting...). If you're using formula, you might have to change formula.

With my boys - A&D worked wonders on one, Desitin on the other. Aveeno didn't work well at all on either one, but might work for you?

M.,

I agree with the other two posts but also make sure that before you put on the ointment or desitin that is butt is dry. Diaper rash cream locks out wetness to allow the rash to heal so if the butt is wet all your doing is locking in the wetness from the wipes. I learned this the hard way. After I started pat drying my daughters butt and letting it get some air for about two or three minutes and then put on the ointment, the rash went away quickly. Also change his diaper more frequently than usual. Try it and see if it helps but if it looks like anything other than red or anything like that, I would take him to the doctor. Good luck and keep us updated!

If Boudreaux’s Butt Paste or Triple Paste (both available over the counter) dont work you can get a prescription from your doctor. Once the rash clears up continue to cover the rash area with vaseline to act as a barrier. This is what has worked for me. Hope this helps.

I used everything at first and once I used Butt Paste it was gone within a few days. I highly recommend Butt Paste above all overs. My Dr. kept recommending Triple Paste, but the Butt Paste cleared it up, I saw improvement in the next diaper change!
Good Luck!!

I would go to the Dr if it's that bad. It might be a yeast rash instead of a regular diaper rash...that may be why Desitin isn't working. If it is yeast, an antifungal cream will clear it up.
Give him some air (give him some diaper-free time...it will feel good and be good for the rash) and see what the Dr says.

It's a bit expensive, but worth every penny...Triple Paste. I usually buy the big one at CVS. It's about $30, but it works. Nothing else worked for my son and he had tons of diaper rashes. Also, there is an Aveeno baby wash with a pink top. You can put that in his bath with baking soda. It helps to nautralize the acid in the urine that gets on his skin. We use to let my son sit in these baths for 20-30 mins a day. For my daughter, bag balm works. And the baths of course.

my son's diaper rash got so bad i needed to use TWO prescriptions: one to treat bacteria and one to treat yeast b/c the MD couldn't figure out which one was causing the irritation. not to be an alarmist, but don't wait like i did thinking it would clear up. if it hasn't gotten that bad, try to change the diaper often to avoid having urine sit on the skin, keep the area very dry especially b/w the ointment and the skin since they lock in moisture (patting with a tissue gently is effective). and try to leave the diaper off as much as possible - laughable advice with an infant i know! also, warm baths are the helpful and plan warm water is better than wipes (not convenient but so much better for the skin). i don't use cloth diapers but i actually put a burp cloth UNDER the diaper once thinking that the cotton would feel better again the skin. what a site! my MD recommended loading up on Aquafor to help the healing process and that helped. good luck!

Try Aquaphor. Apply thickly over clean, dry affected area, and make sure to promptly change the diaper immediately once its soiled, even the tiniest bit wet, until the rash heals. Then continue applying Aquaphor even after it's healed with each change to create a moisture barrier to prevent another rash. Doing that, I can count on one hand the number of rashes my son had and never severe ones. Good luck.

The moms at my playgroup were talking about this. Have you tried Earth Angel Baby (I think that's correct) or Mustela or Weleda diaper rash. I know my ped recommends those. Or you can buy chlorine-free wipes and diapers like Earth's Best. Fianlly, change diaper frequently.

Hi
I would take him to the doctor they can probably prescribe an ointment that has something better in it if it is a really bad rash.
Best of Luck!

Boudreaux's Butt Paste ... Also, just letting him air out will help, too - (they make baby legwarmers, or you could make some out of some old socks to keep his legs warm - it's been so cold lately!) Good luck and have a great weekend!

It may be a fungal rash. Call your pediatrician to verify the symptoms (red bumps) but Lotrimin would do the trick if that is the problem. If Desitin and A&D haven't worked, it be the problem because they should work with regular rash.

Hope this helps.

Triple Paste works wonders. However, if he gets recurring diaper rash, you may want to consider it's something he is eating/drinking that his body is sensitive to.

Hi M.,

I agreed with everything the other moms said but to intensify the effects of "as much fresh air as possible", I have been drying my son's butt with the warm air flow of the hairdryer. I put it on low airflow and low heat and hold it about 2 feet away. That really helps the butt to dry after you have cleaned it and helps the healing process tremendously.

Hey M. I feel your pain! I have been fighting a rash with my daughter since she was 4 days old. She is now 14 months. They rashes come and go and sometimes they are so severe they bleed. It would be fine one diaper change and the next she would be raw. The dr prescribed Nystatin which we use when it gets really bad. Other than that and the other moms have suggested it, blamex works great and plain old vasoline. I also melted the vasoline and added some vitamin E oil and let it harden back up. Make sure if the rash goes away you continue to have a skin protectant like vasoline to prevent it from coming back right away. Also I found that the only diaper I can use on my daughter is Luvs. I have tried pampers baby dry and sensative and also the huggies, she continued to get bad rashes with them. Your best bet would be to call the dr just incase. Oh and by the way if you want to keep the moisture off his skin get some fleece and cut it up, 2 inch by 4 inch peices and put them in his diaper. It absorbs great
