Hi all,
My 16 month old daughter is getting tubes put in her ears tomorrow. I have to wake her at 6 a.m. to be at the hospital for a 7:30 surgery. I am so nervous! Any tips/advice for before/after surgery? I have heard scary stories that they come out of anesthesia like maniacs and don't calm down for atleast an hour. My husband is out of town for business so he can't go with us. On top of this, I am sick as a dog--perfect timing. Major head cold and sore throat happening. Just great!

What can I do next?

My son woke up from his anesthesia just fine!!!!! I didnt even get through my cup of coffee in the waiting room and they told me he was done and waking up and all went well. All I can say is if they give you ear drops to put in her ears warm them up before you put them in. The dr told me to and i didnt and i think it threw off his equilibrium or something and he threw up if i didnt warm it up. like one minute in the crease of your knee or elbow should be sufficient. or maybe my son was just more sensitive. She will be fine and the ear infections will fade and she will be all around happier!!!!!!

My son had a surgery at 12 months and coming out of the anesthesia was the worst because they wouldn't let me hold him. Listening to him cry and not being able to touch him was brutal. BUT, I could use my voice and I made it as gentle and soothing as possible. I have no idea if it helped but it made me feel better. You do the best you can with the rules you have. Nearly 16 years later I can tell you that he has NO bad or lingering memories of this interlude at the hospital.

As for the cold part, ugh. Hopefully your daughter will sleep a lot once she comes home and you can both get well together.

Good luck!

For what it's worth, my younger son had tubes put in his ears when he was a toddler. The surgery went quickly and within six hours there was such a difference in his hearing and speaking. He did not have any "mania." But you would do well to ask the nurses when you are at the hospital. They understand mothers as well as babies. I hope you will feel better soon!

She'll probably be unhappy when she wakes up, but just think of it as a big tantrum. I mean, it's not, but it's no more traumatic for her than any other crying jag. The surgery is soooooo fast. They are in and out of those little ears in like 5 minutes. Both of my kids were fine within an hour or two, slept on the way home, and went about the rest of their day like nothing had even happened.

Good luck. I'm sure it will go great.

it is a veryy fast surgery, my daughter had it done and i was so scared for her, i let her take her favorite stuffed animal and her favorite book. when she went in they let me come with for a little while they gave my daughter Tylenol and a drug of some sort to make her sleepy then when she started getting dopey they had me go back to the waiting room, i cried like a little girl and no sooner i wiped my tears away she was done with her surgery, she was very blah when she was waking up, she also had some other procedure done to reduce scar tissue because she was almost deaf, and she had headaches for a while after her surgery because she could hear o much better

goo luck your little one will be just fine as long as her momma is there for here <3 :)

Call someone to help. That way they can drive and you can hold you daughter on the way to the pharmacist, they can go pick up any prescriptions for you and you can stay in the vehicle holding her, then on the way home. We didn't worry about the car seat, we took residential streets and didn't take any chances. If you can't do without the car seat then hang out in the waiting room or post op for a while until she calms down.

With J he came out screaming and wild but within half an hour we could tell he was calming down rapidly. By an hour he was fine.

This is a minor procedure usualy doesn't take very long,i know anything done to your child will be nerve wracking but don't worry, its minor surgery. my daughter got tubes in at about 11 months and had a ABR afterwards(turns out she has a severe hearing loss but in most cases they just have essess fluid in the ear), and didn't take very long. It takes longer for the effect from anesthesia to go away lol. But since your daughter will be really hungry after the effects b sure to take lots a fluids like juice and whatever food she can have. and about the anesthesia they just seem drowsy until it goes away.well this is the effects it gave my daughter Ari. hope this helped. goodluck.

Bring along a good friend or a family member she is very comfortable with. Bring her favorite bottle or sippy cup which ever she uses with some juice. Also, her blanket, and her favorite thing, whether it be a stuffed bear, or doll. Just bring along her favorite things to comfort her. And just reassure her when she goes, and comes back. It will be hard but it will be over before you know it. And the good thing is, that she wont remember because she is too young, so try and take some comfort in that fact.

Good luck and hang in there! Everything is going to be okay! Hugs to you!

She should do just fine. My son had tubes put in at 23 months old and he was just a little scared when he came out of anesthesia. He had his tonsils and adenoids out, too, so he was really sore. My son had to stay the night in the hospital for observation, so having my husband there was really helpful. If you have to stay for a long period of time, you might want to see if someone could come help you out a bit. However, with just tubes, I heard it is a relatively short procedure and stay in hospital.

She will be just fine! Good luck!!

My son was 6 months old when he had tubes in. It took no time at all,we were really surprised when his ENT came out to say he did good! He was fine coming out a anesthesia when he had his tonsils out at 2 3/4 that was another story...Just relax you will be fine and your daughter will be fine. Think positive thoughts...
