My daughter had a bit of what I thought was diaper rash a couple of weeks ago. I treated it w/zinc oxide and it was better, I thought. We also took her off OJ which she drinks a lot of just in case and have her drinking cranberry juice instead. A couple of times last week she complained about it and then passed a stool immediately afterwards...so I thought she had her signals wrong. She has been potty trained for sometime (4 years old...almost 5). Anyway, for the past few months we find her holding it (grabbing herself to keep from going)and sometimes having accidents. Last night she started complaining a lot again. Well I checked her out and sure enough she had some raised welts on the outside of her pee-pee. So we put diaper rash creme on it again. It was still hurting this morning, so I am starting to try to figure out what to do about it. I am not sure if it is just the fact that she isn't going to the bathroom immediately and wetting her underwear a bit or whether her grabbing to keep from going is part of the cause or what. I don't want to let it go too long, but can't determine what is really going on. We just changed doctors because our doctor retired and we haven't officially seen the new doctor yet. SO I am a bit nervous about taking her in for a peepee check. Thoughts? Experience? BTW, my daughter has skin issues rashes on her arms and elbows which are currently flared up. She had creams which are prescribed by the doctor for her other areas when they are flared. We lube her daily with lotions to help protect her skin which is very sensitive.
Thanks everyone!!! We did go to the doctor. He was hesitant to run test which required obtaining a sterile sample. He looked and felt that she was healing. He asked if she was constipated. So we are making changes to her diet to increase fiber intake as well as watching for any other issues to show up with her female parts. SO far so good.
My daughter occasionally gets irritated in the same area. I assume that it is from poor wiping or too much soap in the tub. I make a paste of half monistat and half neosporin or bacatracin. I apply it in the morning and at bedtime (after bath). It is usually not irritated within a day and gone by 2 or 3 days.
Your situation sounds alot like what I have been through with one of my girls. She has had alot of skin issues and she too has creme to apply when she flares. Do not allow bubble baths because the chemicals are not good if she is prone to infection. Alot of people do not realize but Cranberry juice does help prevent, but is useless once infection is present. It will cause alot of pain if an infection is already there. So once she is in the clear then give her a cup daily to prevent future infections. Also when you put her to bed take her panties off so that she can air out. Sounds bad I know but seriously that area is a breeding ground for bacteria, and any moisture that occurs during that night will dry before festering. Just put pants or loose shorts on her at night. I hope that helps you. Also Corona cream is good when welts are present. Side note my daughter hasn't been to the doctor for her problems since January 07.
I think you should take her to a dr. and let the dr. make a determination. I'd bet she's holding her bladder so long because it hurts when she pees on or has to wipe the welts. It could be that her skin is irritated from any kind of soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener, or a whole list of other things. Some yeast infections can cause welts if serious, but I'd feel better letting a doctor make that determination.

Perhaps you should take her to a doctor. It is quite possible that she could have a bladder infection or a yeast infection. Both of which are painfull and she may not want to potty because it hurts when she does.

my daughter occaisionally has vaginal/perineum soreness and redness. i've come to belive it's b/c she doesn't wipe quite well enough after urination and bowel movements. we also had to stop allowing bubble baths.
we just make sure that she understands how important wipeing clean after using the restroom and rinsing off really well in the shower and/or bath. when she does have "flare" up I use Aquaphor to help it heal. it is the same idea as diaper rash ointment but also has a healing agent in it.
if you find that nothing is helping, she should a Dr, it may be an infection of some kind.
It sound like she is reacting to something--food, environmental,etc. I would muscle test her for food allergies. However, it must be considered that there is someone in her environment that is, God forbid, sexually abusing her. That could also cause other skin rashes too. I'm sorry to bring this up, but it is epidemic, and must be looked at. Blessings to you. Dr. G
When I was younger, I would hold it as long as I could because it would hurt and burn when I would go to the bathroom. Turns out I was born a little more closed up than I should have been and I ended up having to have surgery when I was 9 to correct the problem. I haven't had any trouble since. Hopefully it's not that serious, but if the problem persists, you might take her to a gynecologist just to be safe. Good luck!
I would get her into the doctor asap. It could be a bladder infection, a yeast infection, or something else. My daughter does the same thing, and we came to find out that she has what is call Muluscum sores on her body to include her nether regions. I would just get her checked.
