I went for a routine doctor visit at my family doctor for a downstairs checkup. i had told her about my period being so irregular for months now. My old doctor had switched my birth control and i was spotted here and there or light on my periods to almost not at all. my doctor said i dont think you are pregnant but lets ease your mind and take a test now. i took it and bam to no surprise i was pregnant . I was supposed to be on my period the following week. we were not sure how far along i am. ok i know this is going to sound crazy but we were weighing our options out. i am not for or against abortion under the right circumstances. i have a 3 year old daughter whom i went through hell with during the whole pregnancy, hypertension, the whole nine with her. i had went to a clinic to get an ultrasound done to see how far i am. the ultrasound said i was about 7 weeks. i hadnt made up my mind yet and had to go back to get a health screening etc. when i went back i had to get another ultrasound due to it being over a week since i had been there. I went back and while the tech was doing my ultrasound another nurse came in and they were whispering things and pointing. it said i was now almost 9 weeks but there was a shadowing or something else there and then she said i have a fibroid now that she didnt see the2 weeks before. i didnt look at the ultrasound but i had asked if it was twins and she said after a few pauses i have a fibroid but i seen her make signs to the other nurse as if it may be twins. obviously i am not getting an abortion especially after that. can a fibroid show up out of no where and or can i be having twins. i am going to my new ob gyn doctor on Wednesday and cant wait. i am super tired, anxious, hungry, nauseous, back aches, sitting down iwth some discomfort across my tummy, even more so than my first child at this stage of pregnancy. i am about to be 11 weeks maybe 12 weeks. no twins on either side of the family, im 26 years old, and 2nd pregnancy. i did get pregnant while on birth control. am i having twins or was it a fibroid coverings?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

i still have to go to the doctor's on wednesday but wanted to fillyou in a bit more.i had went to an abortion clinic. i was later told they would not tell me either way if it was twins or not because they would not want to sway a person's reason or opinion on why to get an abortion. i was thinking about getting one due to health issues and home but i am not type of person. i did not want to make my daughter to be motherless god forbid because if this pregnancy. i weighed my options and couldnt live with myself to do such a thing as killing a embryo, fetus, or baby, it isstill apart of me. either way i am not trying to start conversation on opinions on abortion. the signs the tech was giving to the other nrse was actually whispering, there's another. this was before she said anything about the fibroid. i went home that day and looked up fibroids. i know the risks. i also looked up that you are more likely to have twins or multiples if you got pregnant on birth control, overweight, and the fibroifd can obstruct the vision of seeing another baby if it was there. i just wanted to know your opinion on it. has anyone had experience with hidden twins or having fibroids with pregnancy? thanks i will update you on my doctor's apt. wednesday.

Nothing that you've said makes it sound like two fetuses. If there were two, you should have been told. If they are telling you it's a fibroid, then I would trust that is what it is. A doctor should be giving you the results of any screenings or tests.

Twins don't need to be in your family to have them. Identical twins is when an egg spits into 2 babies, fraternal is when you have 2 eggs drop instead of 1. I am not for abortion and your post was confusing, do you want this baby (babies) or not? I hope if you don't want this baby that you give it/them up for adoption. It may be a fibroid but go see an OB GYN.

Fibroids are serious business. They can and do appear out of nowhere, and they can (though do not always) grow significantly during pregnancy (especially the first trimester) because they thrive on hormones. If you have not educated yourself about fibroids, do it now. The fibroid is responsible for your irregular bleeding. And the larger the fibroid gets, the more problematic it will become. There are limited options for dealing with fibroids. They are BENIGN irregular growths (tumors) of uterine muscle/tissue. They present in many different ways. They often complicate pregnancy (spotting/bleeding during pregnancy, miscarriage, pre-term labor, pain from a degenerating fibroid, obstruction of birth canal, forcing irregular fetal presentation, etc.), but they do not always have a negative impact. An ultrasound will not tell you accurately where your fibroid is located or what size it is. Usually the gold standard for that is MRI. During your pregnancy, however, your concern will not be with the fibroid so much as with the pregnancy. Get whatever information you can from your new OB/GYN about fibroids in general -- and about YOUR fibroid in particular (measurement, location and type). Be sure to write down any symptoms of the fibroid that you may have had up to this point. The irregular bleeding/menstruation. Other symptoms include changes in bowel habits, changes in urinary habits, abdominal/pelvic discomfort or pain, pain that radiates into the hips/legs/back, painful menstruation, bloating - especially PMS ... What women with fibroids often suffer is "symptom creep." You may not realize that your fibroid is causing you grief, until it really begins to run your life.
Start reading here, and see where it takes you:
http://www.fibroidsecondopinion.com/
There is also a Yahoo support group for women with fibroids ("uterinefibroids").
Could the fibroid obstruct the view so they can't see if you have twins in there? I think that's quite unlikely, given the difference in how a fetus and a fibroid appear in imaging.
Good luck to you!

Sorry to say it could be ANY of the above. Only fraternal twins run in families and usually maternal not paternal. I do have a history of these twins. However, I had IDENTICAL twins which are generally a freak of nature--meaning that there is no rhyme or reason why the egg splits partially or fully into two. You are following the best option by going to a new OBGYN and getting an additional ultrasound. I found out about my twins at 10 weeks. They were easy to see for us, but it may be a little harder depending on positioning. My symptoms were very the same as my first pregnancy but increased (i.e. I was more tired, morning sickness lasted a few weeks longer, etc.). Let us know if it is twins.

R.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy. It could be either. When I was pregnant with my son (he's 6 now), I had several fibroids. Although they knew I was pregnant, the people at the ultrasound place were not immediately able to determine if there was more than one baby. They had me return a few weeks later so they could look at the growth. It turned out that they were fibroids.

My fibroids grew during the first couple of months of pregnancy, but tapered off. They were of a good size. There were only a few issues that I experienced. I had to get an ultrasound every month to measure the growth of the fibroids. I didn't mind because they gave me pictures of the baby each month. The fibroids masked the feel of the baby kicking and my son was a little slow to turn into the birth position, but he did.

I wish you all the best, regardless if you have one or two babies.

It's probably too early to know for sure. As the baby/babies grow, they'll probably do another ultrasound and be able to tell better. Also, they can do blood test (like HCG) to see if the placenta is producing more hormones than with one baby.

I found out I was pregnant with twins with an ultrasound when I was 6 weeks pregnant. They could clearly see the two separate embryos. I have no family history of twins either. But it could may well be a fibroid. You just have to wait and see. Best of luck, keep everyone posted on the baby/babies :)

As a mom of twins, and finding out we were having twins at our 7 week appt--I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn't have been told about them at the appt. From what I have been told by several drs. concerning fraternal twins is that they are carried through the female genes only; the male genes do not determine...since it has to do with multiple egg production. Identical twins are a miracle of nature when a single egg splits into 2 embryos. Yes, fibroids can show up out of nowhere. A pregnancy the 2nd time around is most certainly going to be different than the first. Many people claim that you will show sooner with your 2nd than your first. Best of luck to you! Keep us posted!
