Could He Be Teething? Any Other Possibilities?

My son turned 4 months just last week. For the past several weeks, he's been drooling all the time and constantly has to have something in his mouth. Monday evening, I was driving home and he was screaming out in pain. I did everything I could to calm him down and he finally went to sleep. At a stoplight, I reached back to feel his head - no fever, but I could feel his jaw moving non-stop, chewing on his bib while he slept. He was kinda cranky that evening when home (no fever), but much better than in the car. Monday night, we woke up a couple of extra times, but went back to sleep easily. Yesterday morning, he was a little fussy. I was convinced he was teething, so I put a little gel on his gums and he seemed to like it. He fell asleep easily on the way to my sister's. My sister kept him yesterday and said he was happy most of the day, but did drool alot and wanted something to chew on (I brought some refrigerated rings for him). Then, last night was terrible! He woke up 8-10 times - I lost count! A couple of times I fed him, but mostly, my husband would just bounce him 1 or 2 times and he'd go right back to sleep.
I know its a little early, but could he be teething? I think I may feel something bumpy under his gums, but not really sharp yet. He's with my sister-in-law today and I left the teething gel and tylenol with her. Someone scared me about tylenol once, though, because they said it can mask real pain that is an indicator for something else that may be wrong. Could anything else be wrong?
I'm trying not to worry, but as a first time mom, I do that alot! And, especially since I'm not with him during the day right now, I hate that I can't fix his hurts! I just have to get through this last week of school, and then I'm with him for good!!
Thanks for the help!
K.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the responses! So - I went to get some Hyland's teething tablets at lunch. It doesn't have an age requirement on them. I'm guessing its okay since one response said her 4 1/2 month old took them? Can I give him the dosing suggestion of 2 tablets every 6 hours?
I know they are all natural, but I just want to be sure.
Thanks so much for all the help! Hopefully I can get my little guy through this as painlessly as possible!

My baby got her first 2 bottom teeth at 4 1/2 months old. Tylenol and hylands teething tablets are great!!! My baby didn't care for the teething rings, but she LOVED it when I gave her a wet washcloth to chew on. Try that and see if it works. Good luck! It'll only be a few days hopefully before this is all over and then he'll have some new pearly whites!

Sounds like teething to me. I would be careful of the teething gels though. I don't have time to look it up, but I've read that they can toughen up the gums and actually make things worse. You should be able to find something about that on google. We tried Hyland's Teething Tablets and tylenol for my DD. They seemed to work well.

Very well could be teething, but if it doesn't get better quickly I would take him and get him checked. I mistakenly thought my youngest was teething and he had an ear infection - my kids NEVER run fever, runny nose, etc. when they have ear infections. Also, before you stock up on Hyland's teething tablets or Oragel, neither worked for either of my kids! We simply gave Tylenol for pain relief. Good luck! My youngest son is now 17 months old and is cutting 4 new teeth (according to our dentist last week) and he has NOT been sleeping well at all!

Hi K.,
Hyland Teething tablets and Tylenol worked the best on my little one who cut his first tooth one week shy of being 4 months! We were suprised too because all other babies in our family popped their teeth through pretty late. Now at 9 months, my little one has a mouthful with 6 all the way in and he's working on 2 more on top! :) A cold wet washrag really helps him too. I run a corner of a washrag under cold water and hand it to him to chew on. And try putting a bib on him to catch the drool! Hang in there!

Sounds like teething to me! Stock up on Hyland's teething tablets (you can find them at Whole Foods in the Health supplement section with the baby stuff). These little tablets are the best. I have used them with both of my little girls and they work wonders. They alleviate pain and help with the restless sleeping too :)

Hi K.,
I am also a new mom of a 3 mo. old. He is also cutting a tooth! I thought it was the weirdest thing! He has been drooling, hand in mouth, fussy, etc. I give him tylenol/gel on gums. It seems to help. I can't belive it! WOW! So young for teeth!!!!
