Constipated Baby - Ontario,CA

I started feeding my baby solids when she was 5 1/2 months old, she is now 7 months and has been constipated the whole time. She is able to eventually get the poop out on her own or with me helping her (pushing on her legs to help with the push). I've tried just giving her prunes and it helped a little bit, the poop was softer but still really thick. I have also taken her off rice cereal, she now eats Barley. I also try to give her a little bit of juice every once in awhile. Is there anything else I can do for her?

What can I do next?

Bananas, rice & applesauce bind us up (that's why the "BRAT" diet of those 3 plus toast are suggested for kids with the belly flu & diarrhea). I'd give more fruits & vegetables, and more fluids overall. Someone else suggested probiotics but Activia was just fined heavily by the FDA for claiming that their product helps digestion - it hasn't been proven. Some babies don't do well with dairy at all. Her poop is going to change with solids anyway but it sounds like you are giving her too much. If you give her cereal, mix in the fruit with it.

My first suggestion you have already done...take her off the rice cereal. Rice is a binding agent, thus something that will cause constipation. All that extra iron fortification can also cause constipation. Second, my ped said pear juice to help clear things out. I would give half of those Gerber juice bottles diluted with water, so I think that would be 2 oz of juice to 2 oz of water. Most of the time I only had to give it once, but sometimes 2 days in a row. Be careful not to give too much as it will cause diarrhea.
I stopped rice cereal really fast with my first and never gave it to my other 2 at all. As soon as I stopped the cereal and gave the juice it cleared up.
I kept pears or pear juice handy all the time just in case in our house. It really works!

Switch her cereal to oatmeal, and give it to her twice a day. Of all the cereals, oatmeal has the most fiber.

Give her more veggies and fruit - she'll get all the fiber and nutrients she needs. I wouldn't even bother with baby cereal until she's older, if at all.

I am using babies magic tea for my severely constipated baby and it worked great. I would recommend the same. It's natural and safe tea for newborns.

She can be allergic to barley/wheat OR just may not be ready for it yet. Is she on formula? You may have to change that too.

Probiotics!!!! I agree with the post by Bug! My son has been on Udo's Choice infant probiotics since he was 6 weeks old, and he HAS NEVER BEEN CONSTIPATED! The probiotics work in the intestines and they are very safe for infants. The active bacteria in probiotics is the same as that bacteria that you find in yogurt, but it is more concentrated. Udo's Choice is what I prefer, but there are many out there.
Good luck to you!

Ours was horribly constipated especially being on Soy because of milk sensitivity. We would give her half/half Prune juice and water, and also feed her prunes each day. It did help so it wasn't hard for her to pass but was still thick.

I have never given her bananas and she is totally off rice and oatmeal because of this. The combination of the juice and the prune fruit seem to be fine for her. You may want to check with your dr about the probiotics. My dr, said as long as she was passing it without a lot of strain not to use it, but if she was straining they would look at it. The other thing he suggested was adding Benefiber to her fruit, just follow the directions.

I use all the cereals, but mix prunes or other fruit in, and make it runnier. Ive also given 1 part juice/2 parts water, 3 oz a day for quite a while to keep things more liquidy.
