I am almost 9 weeks pregnant and I currently breastfeed my 14 month old son. I am in so much pain feeding him that it makes me sick to my stomach andbrings tears to my eyes. I am at my whits end. My son is teething and needs to nurse to sooth. He has nursed exclusively since birth and does not do well when I have refused to let him nurse. I have yelped out in pain and it scares him to crying. He doesn't care for cows milk {which is not as nutritious} and refuses formula. He has cut down on nursing somewhat because of age but still nurses 2-3 times during the day and through out the night. Any suggestions on good tasting supplements or ways I can get relief so I can continue nursing.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the advice and support. I've been pumping during the day and nursing at night. It's going to take my son some getting used to but so far so good. I am going to ask about the nipple cream! Thanks again!

Have you tried the formula designed for older babies? I think Enfamil makes one for children over 1 year old. I don't know if it's any more appealing than "baby" formula, but it might be worth a try.
You also might try other soothers for teething. My son is a fan of ice cubes in a fresh fruit feeder. He really likes it when I make the ice cubes out of diluted fruit juice. Try tylenol and motrin as well, to cut down on his pain.

Try using lanolin breast cream to help soothe your nipples. Some of the discomfort is your homones and there isn't going to be too much you can do about that. But the cream helps soothe things and gives a little lubrication to ease it. Your skin is also a bit more sensitive and can become raw easier, the cream works for that. I nursed my first through my entire pregnancy with my second. He cut back a lot in part because he didn't like when my milk changed to colostrum (some time in the second trimester) and because he didn't like his brother kicking him as I got bigger. My first was nearing his 3rd birthday by then so he was cutting back anyway. He turned 3 2 months after his brother was born.

One good thing about being pregnant & breastfeeding is that your breastmilk actually changes.

The flow will change, the taste etc. It's still just as good for your 14m/o but he might end up weening himself.
Thats what I was told by my dr. and It actually happened. I was getting SOOOOO SICK of breastfeeding my son in the beginning of being preggo again.
Thankfully he totally weened himself.

Until then...Talk to your Dr. just incase, breast cream, warm towels on your breasts etc.

Call your OB and ask for a perscription for All Purpose Nipple Ointment available at a compounding pharmacy.

My lactation consultant gave me the formula, and I had to show it to my OB, but I got the prescription and it is MAGICAL stuff. It has an analgesic for pain and some antifungal and antibacterial properties ftoo. Clearly, with a pregnancy you hvae to ask about safety for a fetus. This stuff saved me when I started nursing and I ended up nursing for 18 months.

Also, talk to an OB or a lactation consultant about the source of your pain. If it is just sensitivity due to pregnancy, I don't know what could help. It also could be mastitis which is awful!

Good luck!

You may have mastitis. It's an infection in the breast that hurts like the devil. I got mastitis when I weaned my daughter from breastfeeding. I cried all the time. Go to your doctor and tell him what all's going on. Good luck!

I nursed throughout my pregnancy as well with no harmful effects to either child. As a matter of fact I now tandem nurse. I can't help too much with the pain, but it does get better! Perhaps you could pump and let your SO feed him once or twice during the day? I'm sorry I can't offer more help, just support!!
