I once worked for an ENT. My instructions for bleeding from the ears was get them in ASAP even if we were booked solid. Hope you've taken him in by the time you get this response. If not, I'd get him seen quickly.

I was slapped really hard on the ear when I was a teenager. It popped sort of, and the next morning there was dried blood in it. Went to the doctor, got a hearing test, and now I'm 50 but have permanent damage (can't hear low tones nearly as good as I should) due to this. Suggest you go to an ENT and get a hearing test and exam.

Take him to the doctor, because if he perforated his ear drum that could be bad and may require a round of antibiotics.

Ever notice kids do things when the doctors' offices are closed? Since the Doctor Offices open in a few minutes, I'd go ahead and call your son's pediatrician's office for their advice, but in the future you may be able to help your sanity by calling the following service for after-hour questions:

Ask-A-Nurse for Children is a service of Methodist Children's Hospital of South Texas. 22-Nurse ###-###-####), I believe the area code is 210 since I call it from San Antonio. The Toll Free # is 1-877-647-7440. The website is www.SAHealth.com. I have used this free service MANY times over the past 10 years and it has helped me keep my sanity :)

Capri Sun straws have that special point made specifically for tearing through a thin film which is what the eardrum is. Because of the bleeding, he needs to see the doctor immediately (if the doctor says so, of course) since you know a straw was in there. When he grabs his ear that is a sign that it is either hurting or irritating him. Little ones don't always cry when an ear is bothering them, but the doctors say that when they grab or pull at the ear it could be a sign of infection or injury. Hopefully he just needs antibiotics.

Good Luck and keep that # on the fridge, you'll need it again. I know we will :)

Take him to the doctor. My son scratched his ear and it bled. Took him to the doc and she gave him some drops so that the scratch would not get infected.

Good luck!

If it were me, personally I would go to an ENT dr. If could miner like he scrapped the inside wall of his ear or could be that he poked s omething a little to hard. I would just have him checked just in case. They might want to give him drops to help it heal and keep infection out. Best of luck!

he probably needs to see the doctor. He could have broken his ear drum and get an infection.

I would take him to the dr. to have it checked out.

When I was a little girl, about 3 or 4, I stuck a bobby pin in my ear! It HURT, but I don't remember my ear bleeding. If it did, it was very little. Luckily, I did not do any damage.

wow! A capri sun straw. first time I've heard of that one. recently, my nephew had to go to the ER b/c he put his peas from dinner up his nose and those peas really went up there! He couldn't breathe. But he cleaned his plate!

The ear might be fine....usually when it's real damaging is when it really hurts and the kid stops putting things in orifices. But I'd get him to the Doc and make sure the eardrum is OK. If it did rupture, there are extra bath precautions you will need to take until it heals.

Go to the Doctor, immediately. It could be just scratches just inside the ear but it could also be more serious. Don't wait, have it checked out.

If he bled, take him to be checked out. Better safe than sorry. They may not do much, but at least you would have an idea of any injury. (I'm not one to go to the doctor for anything either; but I would on this one.)

My guess is he scraped the inside of his ear (most likely) or punctured his eardrum... Should heal on it's own, but I would check with the nurse at the pediatrician's office just to be sure about cleansing, etc.

Hi K.
Have him checked- a lot of kids (mine included) put things in their ears and noses- if he is pulling at his ear- then something is bothering him there- just have him looked at.
good luck and blessings

From experience I can tell you that the pedi, or even an ENT, needs to look at the ear. I was cleaning my son's ears with an off-brand Q-tip when it broke. I saw blood and thought I had puntured my son's ear drum. I slumped to the floor and crawled to the phone (can't take the sight of blood). The pedi couldn't see him until the next morning, but did talk with me over the phone and was very comforting. It turned out to be a scratch on the wall of the ear canal and the eardrum was fine. The pedi even let me look at the eardrum to assure me that I had not damaged my child. I did also get the "don't put anything smaller than your elbow in an ear" lecture.

Take him to the doctor. He may have cut or scratched his ear canal. It may have become infected. It may be just sore. It's worth a trip to the doctor or a "doc in the box" to check it out. Don't wait.
