Birth Control Other than the Pill

My well woman exam is coming up and I would like to talk to my doctor about a birth control other than the pill. I have never used anything besides the pill. But I hate having to worry about taking it every day. I don't plan on having any more children at all so I am thinking of a more permanent birth control or something that I wouldn't have to think about all the time. And if it is something that makes you not have periods anymore - all the better. So what recommendations do you have?

What can I do next?

I have Mirena and love it. I know others on MP have expressed varying opinions about it, but I have had it for almost two yrs now w/no issues.

I also have the Mirena, I am on myu second one, getting ready to get my third (it lasts for 5 years) I do not have periods! Loving that! Although I think it is awesome I do have a friend who had one and had lots of bleeding and had to have it removed. I would definatly talk to your doctor about it and if you do decide on it and it doesnt work out for you it h=can be removed! Good luck!

I'll third the Mirena! I'm 4 years in on my first one and will be having it replaced this fall with the 2nd! Love it! The only side effect for me is that my hair and nails grow REALLY fast! Which is fine, except that my facial hair (eyebrows and lip) is also growing darker and faster! :)

I love the Mirena IUD. It's plastic and only has a very, very, very low dose of hormone that affects you locally to the hardware. What I love most is that it's as effective as a tubal ligation and I don't get my period except for spotting once in a while. It can be removed any time, but lasts five years. I'm on my second one. When this one runs out in 3 1/2 years I plan to get another one.

I couldn't use the Paraguard or Essure because both involve metals that I'm allergic to. If you have any skin allergies to nickel or copper (I get eczema if they're in my shoes or on jewelry) then don't get either Paraguard or Essure. You could have an allergic reaction from the inside.

If you get a tubal ligation, you'll still get your period. If you're okay with that then that's one way to go, but only if you're absolutely certain that you're done having children.

I wouldn't get any injections. I've heard nothing but horror stories in real life (aka off the internet from "real people"). You can't get it out of your system and have to wait three months for the hormones to dissipate even if you have a bad reaction.

If you're truly done, look into Essure!
Mine was covered 100% by insurance, and it was an easy procedure. 20 minutes, in and out of the doc's office.
I go back for my confirmation test next week. Provided all is well - I'm done taking hormones and baby-worry free for the rest of my life! :)

Nuva Ring if there is ANY doubt about more children. Essure procedure if you are sure you are done.
