I have never been much of a birth control lady, but my sister in law was on the shot (Depo?) and gained 50 pounds the first three months, and steadily gained a little each month after that!

I personally would stay away from the shot.

A better option than Planned Parenthood is Target or Walmart (or any pharmacy that has started the $4/9 generic plan). They now have on their generic plan Ortho Tri-cyclen or Ortho Cyclen pills in the generic (Tri-sprintec & Sprintec). It is $9 a month. This is what I have changed over to for cost. I don't think you will be able to beat this price!

I would definitely go to Planned Parenthood, they'll do an exam and give you birth control. The pill there is pretty cheap, the ring (which I much prefer) is a tad more expensive though. When I called them to see about getting it from there it was like $45 a month. The pill when I got it there years ago was only like $10-$15 depending on how many months you buy.

My advise is go to planned parenthood. I was without insurance for 3 and a half years and they were very helpful with not only my birth control but also my yearly exams. Even if the clinic is not a funded clinic they are still reasonable with their prices. I know they have a bad rep because they offer women choices that some people do not agree with but they also help women who have no insurance or cannot afford to see a regular doctor. you will have to make an appointment and been seen for an exam but after that they can provide you with what you need.

I would suggest contacting your nearest Planned Parenthood facility. You cam look them up online http://www.plannedparenthood.org. They have every type of contraceptive and are pretty reasonable to be seen by one of their physicians. They even offer Saturday appointments.

Hi Bethany, when we didn't have insurance I did some research on the web for generic BCP. I know that Costco and Sams now offer cheaper generics, but back then (almost 10 yrs ago) I ended up using www.canadapharmacy.com. when I found one I was sure would be OK for me, then I got my OBGYN to give me 90 day supply w/refills for 1 year. THere are so many new options for BCPs now that I wouldn't know one to suggest but I do know that generics save you money. I ordered meds from Canada for years with no problems at all. Most recently Zyrtec until it became available OTC generic in the US. GOOD LUCK, D.

Don't know if you know, but walmart & target as well, plus mayber Krogers & Albertsons have the generic birth control pills for both Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Ortho Cyclen for sale for $9 a pack. Now, those might not be the right pills for you, but I know they are very popular and used alot.

Planned parenthood- they will also do the paperwork/ application for the Medicaid Women's Heath Program. With that, you get yearly female checkups and BC. I don't know what all types they offer- but the Pill definately.

I have Mirena IUD and I absolutely love it!! It is a bit costly however well worth it. I think its around $1000 for the mirena plus the cost of sonograms to ensure its in the right spot and the exam. I had two sono bc my dr just wanted to ensure it was in place I have not had any problems with it and I have had it since November and love it. I know it sounds exepnsive but it pays for itself within 1 year bc you dont have to continue going to the pharmacy every month for your pills. Hope this helps you out!! thanks A.

you can go to your local Family planning clinic and get just about any kind of birth control you need. Just google family planning and you will be able to find one in your area.

I understand, I also don't have insurance. I don't know what state you live in but call and see if there is a public health clinic in your area. The clinic in my area saw my friend and visit cost was based on family size and income. She paid $15 for visit and $5 a month for the pills. I use planned parenthood in Texas. Texas has a program for women health medicaid which is for one yearly visit and one year's supply of birth control which is the program that I use. Or maybe talk to your doctor and see if he/she gets samples of birth control and will give the samples. Doctors gets tons of samples and might have a year supply of pills to give you. my friend used to go to Planned Parenthood, it is $30 a month. She didn't have insurance.

I would call Planned Parenthood. They have a sliding scale and the cost of the birth control are lower. I used them for 2 years while I did not have insurance. I also have the IUD now. It took my body about 6 months to adjust. However, I am glad I waited it out. I love it now.

Hi Bethany, the IUD worked great for me. I had it put in when my son was 1, he's almost 10 now and I haven't had any problems with it. I got the one with no hormones, just the small plastic/copper t-shaped thing that stays in your uterus. You can have one put in through planned parenthood for a fraction of the cost at a obgyn.

Walmart has some bcps for 10 a month on their 4 dollar rx plan - call and find out which ones, and ask for a scrip from the doctor who delivered your daughter.

Health Dept.? I am from NC and when I was in college, I got mine from the health dept. They worked with people without insurance, low income, etc. They gave away free birth control. It is income based.

you can look up planned parenthood in the phone book or online on yahoo yellow pages...they have one in almost any city and birth control might be provided free or they can help you figure out how to get it free..

My insurance doesn't cover birth control so I looked into the less expensive meds offered at Wal-Mart. I researched the ones that they have and discussed with my OB/GYN which one would be best for me. They are only $9/mo.

I took the shot to eliminate my menstrual cycle which is a form of birth control. For me it was too much hormone in the body all at once. I ended up having breakthrough bleeding which I was advised would happen on the first shot and possibly thru the second and then get better. It didn't get better, I ended up bleeding throughout the month even after stopping the shots. They also do not mention you "may" have weight gain. I went into knowing this so I watched my eating. What eventually happened...I was diagnosed with a tumor on my ovaries & uterus. I did a serious fast to purge toxicities from my body and fortunately the tumors went away but only after having to have surgery to determine if they were cancerous. Taking the birth control pill keep in mind other medicines can impact the efficacy. I conceived while taking the birth control and an antibiotic for a kidney infection. I realize my report isn't all rosy & positive but I wanted you to be aware of another person's reality and to research what you are putting into your body. I would suggest you learn your rhythm cycle so you know when you are ovulating which will help eliminate some of the potential of pregnancy. Best of life to you.

I got an IUD (Mirena) four months ago and love it. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a six month old so pills are last thing I have time for. This is working great for us.

I go to the womans clinic. They go by your income. I pay 25.00 for a month. And you can get cked out too. They are clean and nice. Its like going to the doc. But with out the price. Good luck. I use Nuvaring (aka 'the ring'), and I didn't have insurance until recently. It is about $50-60/mo for full cash cost. That might seem like a lot of $$ but then again it is worth it for me because I only have to worry about changing it once a month. I'm not in any way able to remember taking a pill every day!!!

You also might want to consider spermicide, I used that as well for a few years before I started the ring. They sell a box of 10 pre-filled applicators for about $12 at Walmart (for vaginal use) or you can get a tube of it and your partner can use it inside of the tip of the condom.

Try Planned Parenthood. They have the most reasonable prices without insurance.

Go to Planned Parenthood or the County Health Department. You can get birth control pills at a much reduced cost. My daughter, even with health insurance, goes to Planned Parenthood for her birth control and they still cost her less than her copay would.

Planned Parenthood goes by your income. i think birth control should be given out for free but apparently congress dosent agree! Good luck

Planned Parenthood is a great place if you don't have insurance. I go there and my pills are $27 a month. They also have great rates on exams. I know there are locations in Plano and McKinney. Hope this helps.

Go to Planned Parenthood. It's not nearly as expensive as the dr.'s office. You can go to www.plannedparenthood.org and find one close to you. They offer all different types of birth control, and they can also counsel you on what will be best for you. They also do pap smears and anuual exams.

Check with your city or county for the locale Well Womens clinic, they will be able to help you with alot of issues.

Check around and ask about Natural Family Planning. It is a no-cost way to avoid pregnancy by teaching you and your husband how to "read" your body. Most Catholic dioceses have programs. There is probably a cost for the class and materials, and I understand it takes about 3 months. The advantage is that you are not putting chemicals into your system, just learning how to "read" your natural body cycle.

Planned Parenthood is a great place to go to get affordable birth control. In my experience, most of the different methods (i.e., pills, shot, etc) all end up costing about the same in the end. I know that last time I looked into it, when you added up the cost for the pill over three months & compared it to the cost of the shot once every three months, the cost was almost exactly the same. Either way, I'd definitely check with your local Planned Parenthood office or check with your regular doctor to see if they give a special discount for paying cash.

Planned parenthood is great and they can put in a IUD the suggested one is the 5 year one. Any Nurse, or Dr. can put in and remove it.

Call Planned Parenthood. They'll be able to get you going with something and will help you afford it since you don't have insurance.

They give you an exam and pills based on what you can pay, or at least they used to. I would check into it.

I did the Depo Provera shot a few years ago and found it to be a disaster. It worked great as birth control - mostly because I lost all desire to have sex! A lot of people gain weight or get depressed on it, so I'd be wary of it. If you know you can take the pill regularly, there are some pretty cheap generic low-dose (safer) birth control pills. I think you may need a prescription, but I use the Nuva Ring and I think it is only about $50 a month without health insurance. You may want to call your local pharmacist and ask them how you could get on that. It is a small, plastic ring that you put inside of you for 3 weeks, then take it out for a week to have your period, then you put a new one for another 3 weeks, and so on. I have been on it since October and I love it! Also, there are a lot of discounts available for prescriptions if you are a member of various groups like AAA, Costco, etc.

If you do not have health insurance, the only advice I can give you is to look up your local health department or planned parenthood.

They usually go by your income or charge a flat fee for services/pills.

I do not agree with some of the practices of some of these types of places. But, if you do not want to have another baby right now, you are doing the right thing in persuing birth control BEFORE getting pregnant.
